Winter Feeder Fishing On The River Ribble | Uk Rivers

Welcome to this years Christmas special, a session feeder fishing on the river ribble. The stretch of the river we are fishing today is known as church deeps near Preston. Accessible via a public car park.

We set out with minimal gear and multiple baits to try a couple of different swims, we was expecting a tough day ! But the day turned into a reasonably productive session as you will see from the video!

This is the first video and start of a new playlist on the channel fishing different rivers in the uk, both small and large using a range of techniques.

Grab a brew or a beer and enjoy the video !

Morning what’s going on YouTube Welcome to Wy angling joining me and my dad today on the river Ribble and this is probably one of my most requested videos for us to come out and do a feeder session on the river well that’s what we’re doing today we’re on a really deep

Stretch of river here it’s a fairly new thing to US river fishing so it’s more of an exploratory session today sorry about the traffic there is a road on top the my dad did a lot of river fishing when he was younger he’s had plenty of nice

Barble out of the Ribble but he’s not been River fishing for many many years we’re just giving it a go and we’re probably going to be doing more River fishing over the coming year um caught on my line there so we’re coming into winter now and the leaves are just absolutely

Piling through the river obviously the river Ribble is a very powerful River and it’s just forcing Ste s branches leaves through the swim and it’s catching the line to be honest with you probably could have done with slightly heavier leads today but we’ll see how we get on move my rig right

Round got a lead on at the moment it’s just pulled it right around into shallow water so I’m going to have to recast that but River fishing is very very new to me and like I said it’s something that I’m going to be doing a lot more of

Over the next 12 months so if you want to follow my River fishing Journey make sure you hit that subscribe button and if you’ve got any questions about anything that we’ve done today or any suggestions please drop a comment in the comment section everybody’s welcome on the channel beginners Advanced everybody

So this is a learning curve for me and to be honest with you because of how long it’s been since my dad’s done this kind of fishing I think it’s a learning curve for him as well and sometimes it’s really nice to try something new something a little bit different mix

Things up a bit and it just makes everything a little bit more exciting that’s one of the good things about fishing it can never be boring because there’s so many different types of fishing and so many different Waters and environments that you can fish in that

You constantly can mix it up if you wanted to and different species to Target obviously I’m trying to Target anything today fishing with bread wafters and we’ve got some natural baits as well so I really am after catching anything so because we’re traveling fairly mobile what we’re probably going

To do is move swims quite frequently today and we’ll try a few different ones like I said this session isn’t necessarily about catching any fish today today it’s about exploring and getting used to the river so that we have a better idea for next time we come maybe we need some slightly different

Gear whatever now I’m already starting to see that I should have probably put my four or 5 oz tip on the bble rod and I’ll probably say that I need some heavier leads as well so we know that for next time it’s all about putting yourself in the scenario in the

Situation and uh see what gear you actually need obviously I’m not an amateur I’ve got all the basics with me of the things that I presume that we would need for this kind of session but until you get into the scenario until you put yourself in the situation you’re

Not 100% so let’s see how we get on in the session folks I’m looking forward to It so for those of you that don’t have any experience when it comes to River fishing much like us but obviously I know a few things you need a certain amount of specialized gear one of them is an extendable Bank stick that goes fairly High and screws into the ground pretty

Deep so it’s nice and sturdy like that got my grace Prodigy PB 2 and A4 test curve bble rod and I’ve got a 3 oz tip on there now INF flood that probably isn’t going to be heavy enough but today I think we’ll be all right I’m starting

Off on a 30 G feeder I’ll see if that holds bottom but I’ve got a feeling that it won’t hold bottom today so I’ll have to go for something a little bit heavier I’ve just got a normal cage feeder set up I’ve got it on a running

Rig and then a quick change bead there normal cage feeder set up and that quick change bead helps kick that hook length away from your cage feeder and then like I said to you before I’ve got my I’ve got my mix of stuff that I save up all year round

Out the freezer got some W and meat there as well well but I’m going to start off on bread so I’m going to put a nice big chunk of bread on using a size 10 hook so a nice big hook and uh just cast out this has got

Pellets in it’s got dead maggots it’s got corn it’s got ground bait all sorts of stuff keep my scissors on me today I’m just going to cut squ of this up nice and neat because it’ll all together better and last longer there we go so let’s get that nice big chunk of

Bread got our barble Rod now like I said I don’t know if I’m going to going to be able to hold bottom so it’s a bit of a test cast it’s First cast but we’ll get some feed out and we’ll see if I can tighten up to it size 10 feeder

Ook so a nice big O and then I’m just going to squeeze that back around the line we’ll cast it out I’m not very well today I’m recovering from a bit of an illness so if I sound like I’m a bit knacked as it were that’s why all right

So I’m just going to set that on my rod rest I don’t think that’s holding bottom right so that wasn’t holding bottom so I’m going to put an heavier feeder on I’ve got um probably a 3 4 oz feeder there I’m going to give that a go this really is a heavy

Feeder I’ve never used anything this heavy before let’s give it a go it’s just started raining typical you always want to make sure your Point’s clear when you’re fishing with bread there we go we’re out that’s better not getting any kind of bumping on the tip so we’re on bottom there

So we obviously be able to see any kind of bites it’s quite dark on the GoPro cuz it’s still early morning yet about qu 8 must be a lot of rubbish flowing down this River it’s picking my rod up damn hey probably should have gone with my heavier tip rather than a 3

Oz but went with my dad’s advice on the 3 oz but I just want to be probably outside of the floor it’s right in the middle that’s probably not the right place let’s try the that looks a bit better we’ll swap onto a lead I think and put a wter

On pretty sure I’m getting bites there must be small fish bites I’m just going to leave it a little bit longer this time till it really gets hammered so these four and o feeders they’re only just about holding bottom to be honest with you I think I could do with maybe

Like five maybe 6 oun feeders today it is just absolutely pushing leaves through this River so massively under Gund I think on this session but it’s a learning curve at the end of the day I did not expect this River to be so powerful but I am enjoying it I don’t

Know whether that’s a b maybe that might be a bite let’s leave it a little bit I’ve been wondering why is it called church deeps do you think it’s signaling bik time not for us this is what I’m reeling my stuff into every single time dare me hard work but that’s River

Fishing look at size of these feeders folks absolutely chunky and heavy as out but they’re still not holding bottom you know so my dad says the water levels rolls about a meter in last 24 hours yeah I wish should have put my four or 5 O tip on

Today but like I said that’s what fishing’s all about you you do it and you learn it’s all about learning all a big learning curve is fishing right once your meat is on do you want to have a couple more casts and try a different swim see if we

Can find somewhere a bit slower let’s try that seems to be sat quite nice actually let’s get ourselves a brew I think I think the feeder seems to be working better than the leads because the feeder kind of blocks the leaves so the stretch of the River

Today is actually a free stretch not that it matters because we are members of both wig and angling society and Southport but the uh opposite side of the bank there which is actually the paage stretch is absolutely treacherous it looks absolutely treacherous and I’m not even sure how you get down to

It yeah definitely travel light if you’re ever thinking of doing this kind of fishing just take a roving backpack maybe a light chair we’ve not even brought the chairs today because like I said we’re trying a few different spots uh Bait Bucket your net your rods

And obviously your uh your rod pod or Bank stick whatever you’re using but if you can see there how much my rod tips doubled down could probably do with like I said me before or 5 oz tip on it and every now and again all the leaves nudge the feeder they push the

Feeder down so it’s it’s just olding bottom that lead it would be fine at any other time of year that only because of all the leaves and branches but I’m enjoying it so far nice scenery it’s quiet there’s one other guy fishing further down hopefully fingers crossed managed

To get a fish CU that’s what we’re here for at the end of the day I think there’s a tiny fish plucking at the maggots just twitching every now and again a lot of people say oh it’s just unfishable it’s like this not bother what they’ll probably be right

Dad they’re probably right Dad aren’t they the river flows increased since we’ve been here this morning it’s pushing through really hard now you’ve only got to look Downstream to see how heavy the flow is and try here where the water’s a bit slacker on this sand

Bank and then we’ll probably move a bit further down I’m try maggots right maggots going try three maggot see if we can get any smaller fish but I am using a size 10 o so might kill my chances of some much smaller some good fish on this stretcher River I’m Le to

Believe cap to 30 and all sorts big bream it’s just one of them things with a river you’ve got to be in it to win it and uh you’ve always a chance of a really good fish it’s a game River as well so there’s trout

In so I want to be on the slack on the edge of the slack which is wor about there it’s probably not a bad cast that oh yeah flows nowhere near as strong there if any it’s a lot better you can see my tip There there’s hardly any Bend in it whatsoever I’m just right on the edge of the slack oh king fisher if you want to see more of this kind of fishing guys make sure that you let me know in the comments and we’ll do a bit more of

It also if you want to support the channel channel to make these kind of things possible and all the filming and editing head over to the uh website www.west england.uk get yourself some bait get yourself a keing I think there’s a tiny fish plucking at the maggots just twitching

Every now and again so I’m fishing just on the edge of the flow line just into the slack water and obviously in theory what fish will do is they’ll set off the flow line in the slight water where they’re not expending as much energy potentially I’m going to Chuck some

Bread feed in actually let’s get some bread moving down that River so get a couple of handfuls of that moving in an hour swap onto bread and potentially clip a lead back on there’s the church again signal in bik time let’s have it seems to be signaling bik time every

Hour and i’ I’ve not a b yet if I’m really struggling folks I’ll swap this size 10 out for maybe a 14 or something like that drop my hook length strength down the only problem is if you do that and you do happen to get a a decent fish

On you probably have no chance of Landing it in this flow dad’s just getting himself set up here he’s going to try further down that FL line he sa the blank oh my first River fish my first River fish it’s a nice [Laughter] roach absolutely epic roach I think beautiful

Roach look at the coolor of the eyes on it beautiful Happy Days yes in Chu with that you save the blank all right I’m going to put this little gripper lead on Corum one 2 and a half oce but it’ll be fine now that we’re not in that

Flor it’s amazing how different those roach look to commercial fishery roach so at this lead it’ll just take a bit of ground bait just so you’ve got a little bit of feet going in hopefully I’ll be able to see small fish indication better now with that smaller red

On look at this LS of baits he’s got all the baits with him it gives me a chance of using The Old Ship mix out the freezer as well this because I don’t think these River fish are going to be fussy about what they ate of course I brought the wesy wafters

As well just in case might even try one might be another roach bite that it’s getting little twangs little vibrating twangs on the tip problem is I think this Hook’s just a little bit big keeps bursting the maggots now they’re still wriggling about so shouldn’t have too bad of an

Impact let’s stick with three maggots and you see this liquidized bread here it sticks to these Corum feeders perfectly cuz they kind of hollowed out I think half the battle is getting it on the crease line there you go now you know you’re on the right line because your feeder is not getting

Dragged and I’m all using a light feeder see I’m getting plucked straight away on the maggots he’s in again I think nice roach Dad this is a nice roach lovely good size absolutely smash them maggots in the discarder on this one got it look at that look at the eyes on it

Look at how orange they are well the’re reading in the right direction sizewise that was a slightly better bite on that one might be getting the techers down now might be getting the technique down for the river that’s um see yeah it’s only shallow there maybe 2 three foot I reckon

It’s not deep at all but you probably can’t pick it up on the camera but my God it’s surging through just beyond that only getting little tiny vibrations on the tip I’ll show you what they look like there like that that’s all I’m getting you got to watch it

Closely leading now I’m in bloody water now soon creeps up on you that water P all Cas feed on just chopping and changing seeing what works best it’s only 30 gram that cage feeder decent size feeder but not heavy I’ll feed some live some dead and some pellet somewh up here as

Well I like to gently press my hand around the spool with the reel on the cast because I find that it kicks the hook length out in front of the feeder stops any kind of Tangles yeah into something I think a little bit better could be another roach slightly bigger

Maybe I think it’s a brein dad it’s is a brain nice one oh wow River bre GRE there nice fish oh must have just been oped smashing go get back wrong way go on that way oh I’m not really sure what I’m doing different to my dad I’m uh

My setup’s heavier than his as well and I’m fishing bigger Oaks more maggots so God knows God knows unless I’m just putting it in right spot or maybe it’s the old freezer mix that’s doing it for me who knows somebody made me laugh in the comments said imagine going into tackle

Shop and asking for a mix and no I’m not selling it on my website some bumping going on again smaller this time I think wait for some went for a little bit of a better take I think there’ll be some nice breaming this swim come on two rer or a chub temperature’s dropped

Considerably getting plucked straight away though as soon as I cast back out so it’s it’s good sign I’ve just mentioned to my dad I said there a fancy moving but doesn’t seem to think it’s a good idea because there’s a bit of slack here but around the corner there the flow is

Very very heavy so I think potentially this is our best chance of catching might not be the best chance for a barall but to be fair I’m not really set out for a barble and set out more for the silvers with maybe a chance of a bar that’s a good

B that was a good bite we maybe the chance of the B going have to move in a minute have to move around here a bit cuz Dole water well the king fisher seems to like this stretch which is a good sign clearly some fish here well folks at least I’ve caught

Today few nice roach and a bream definitely can’t argue with that it’s more than I expected to be honest first time coming fish in the river my dad’s not had anything yet only takes a big barble to come along and uh slam this piece of lunching meat that

I’ve got on at the minute but I’m going to give this 10 minutes on the lunching meat and then I’m probably going to swap back onto the maggots see if I can get a couple more of them roach temperatures dropped significantly the water level’s Rising the flow seems to be getting

Stronger probably a little bit of a melt off I would have thought which my dad seems to think is not really good for the the fishing on a river Alters the water temperature he’s save the blank is it a roach nice cast that way too far then I

Think you know you’ve cast out too far cuz you start getting caught up in all leaves and rubbish not run with them maggots let’s just get it back out this Kingfish is all over the place probably can’t see it on the GoPro but you’ll hear it D just had another

Roach so maybe they’re moving further down the swim oh that was a about bite come on definitely roach this it’s drying it’s probably too small to stay all them maggots in that size 10 I’ll strike into the next one the next set of bumps here we go another bra I

Think tell you what bream in the river they off um don’t off fight oh it’s a bream it’s a good bra dad oh it’s a really good Bram at this fol let a look at this well folks River Bream that’s what we’re coming out for lovely fish good

Size what do you think that two and a half yeah definitely it’s thick let’s get it back I knew there was some messing about with it what a chunk on a bunch of five maggots in a couple of Anglers today actually I’m going to walk down the stretch dad’s just had another

Route but definitely seem to be getting bites quicker on the maggots but feeding Bread on this Corum feeder and it grips it quite well and they’re not far it’s not far out at all this oops SC it me good Lu charm it’s not going to leave me alone now

That’s one what you’re not seeing on the camera is I’m casting maggots into the flow as well wish I brought a catapult with me which is probably olding the fish in the swim to watch what I’m doing all me fingers off here couple of good things about fishing

With a bunch of maggots like that one anything will take them two they stay on the hook really well and they don’t seem to pick up leaves because of how light they are now if there’s bream and there’s roach in this swim I don’t see why there wouldn’t be chub and

Barble now I don’t know whether this is a good Peg or a good stretch like I said we haven’t tried anywhere else today but there’s been a couple of Anglers passed by and they all seem to look down here whether we’ have seen what we’re doing

Or whether they wanted to fish this Peg I don’t know yeah better bite this time like a completely different type of bite I think it might be a good roach my God it is a good roach dad really good road oh my God huge oh my God this is the biggest roach I’ve

Ever seen in my life you tell I don’t get out much oh my God one hell of a bite look at that at that he’s having a right go at me it’s like where’s me bread never mind that fish look at that that’s biggest roach ever caught in my life dad that’s nice

That it is chunk not bad condition either epic River Ribble roach that not a bad first days first day session on the River dead no it’s not off it goes Epic on a bunch of five maggots at that so making this like a bit of a Medusa IG but whatever I’m doing it’s

Working feeding handballing stuff out as well as feeding with the feeder or bomb is it well not really a feeder I think I’ve got a brain p with this the bream bite seems to be a little bit more tensive they’re almost more like vibrations than the

Knock it’s like call the wild in my peg here I’ve got got wagtails got ones they’re all crowding around me I tell you what folks fishing like this don’t have to give you a neck ache feel like I’m going to be stuck in the position of looking up at my

Tip be nice to get a chub or a bar but for this time of year into winter definitely can’t complain with the day fishing that I’ve had oh thought they had a fish on them Mr Swan a couple of knocks we’re losing the light a little

Bit now and I seem to be I’m still getting bites but just seem to be missing them so it must be small fish yeah I’m striking into stuff and there’s just nothing on the end go right on the Flor line that last time I’m still getting loads of Twitches on the rod

Top but I’m just leaving them just waiting for something a little bit more substantial of a bike it’s a shaded area this anyway but losing the light a little bit I’ve got my sunglasses on so I can see the rod sip a little bit clearer against the sky we’ve not really done

Any moving about this session like I thought we were going to do we’ll probably do that next time we come out River fishing but with this spot producing fish we thought it’ be a little bit silly to move on so I’ve been feeding thly have trying to maybe draw something a little bit

Bigger in now I’m not really sure if that’s how it works with River fishing like it would in a lake but I imagine the fish are quite mobile and they will come into scent and smell but I’m going to keep going probably going to fish on for another

Hour or so to see if I can get anything a little bit better and then we’ll probably get packed up and call it a day but I’ve honestly really enjoyed today something a little bit different for me and hopefully something a bit different for you guys to watch as well and I’m

Definitely looking forward to the next River session a decent Siz Ribble barble is definitely on the goal list for next year this would actually be a great spot just to trot down in this slack water might have to bring a center pin down here and have a go with one of them

Well there’s a load of fish topping here we just move swims and we’re going to have a couple of Chucks just before we call it a day loads of fish Topp in there so seems pretty slack here I think uh feeder at all bottom quite bright down this way and it

Is dark around that other side dad so I’m just going to Chuck it just here cuz this is where all the fish can open it now yeah well folks hey get off of me bread got duck e in me bread behind me and I’ve got an eel my first eel this

Ever can’t believe it at that I hate it God have that away it’s munched it oh yeah SW it’s not SW it’s not completely swallow it get a landing net Dad please landing net just want want you to hold the landing net underneath it my first deal

Brilliant we tied itself up around the line yeah they do there we go slim all right there we go SN SN look at this that’s my first steal that folks epic let get it back this Swan is vicious honestly how about that no wonder I’m

Not going to buy had a nail on the end I think all in all pretty successful West is angling first trip down the river absolutely Savage that Swan well folks we’re just making our way back down to the car now I hope you’ve enjoyed the first River session on the

Channel we definitely have so I just want to say thanks very much for watching and we’ll see you in the next Westy’s Angling

    1. Happy christmas to you both , nice video, nice roach as well ! Makes a change from High hayes where i met you last year ,keep up the good work and looking forward to the next one.😊

    2. I always fish on the edge of the flow, the thinking is that the fish will sit there not expending energy then just nipping out into the flow to intersect any passing morsel, also you can build a bed of feed

    3. In a pond or lake your ground bait stays in one spot,in a river your groundbait flows away with the current. You need a constant source of groundbait in a river.A swimfeeder only deposits a miniscule amount of feed compared to constant feeding. The groundbait in a river draws fish up the current to your bait.

    4. some winter fishing its been grim up here rivers seem always in flood fishing its the cold and hope that kills you thanks for your vlogs all year best to your family and thee dad keep entertaining us ta

    5. Hi Westy great video like you iv never done river fishing and one my target fish is a barbel in the future so il be watching your ribble vids with interest, I do know where you are as I live about 4to 5 miles from church deeps

    6. River fishing. I like it. I fish the Hudson River for carp and I've found shallow bays that are out of the main current. I still deal with some tidal flow but not any heavy current Good stuff. Keep it up lad.

    7. That was a good winter session 🙂 throwing some loose feed upstream is the way to go & Dad is right on fishing a river while its on the rise is not usually productive but better as the level decreases 20 minutes per swim and move if no bites .If bites are coming in the swim stay put until they dry up Love the Korum gripper weights they hold bottom really well As for the neck ache get a sidewinder indicator the tip can be as high as you like but the indicator is at the level of the first rod ring they come with three tips that can be changed to suit conditions without dismantling the rod .Your Korum xtnd rod is good for river fishing as well

    8. After a shite Christmas, and completely bored of the crap on tv I really enjoyed watching this. I love your enthusiasm, makes me look forward to getting back out there fishing 🙂

    9. Love your videos allways down to earth never go over the top and fishing with ur dad all the time is somthing money cant buy. Ps i fish the yare in norfolk can be very tidal there probly not as much as there but i allways cast uptide and let alot of slack line out to create a big bow in the line and feeder dosent move half as much keep up the good work mate

    10. Hi bud, a "Quickstopped" Lobworm or a couple of Dendro's down the edge can be good as owt when it's Up & Coloured. & look like they've been washed naturally in with all the rain. Also, I always found Bronze & Whites worked better than Reds on the river.

    11. I fished the river severn with my uncle at the end of the summer we had never really river fished before, we did pull a nice few chub and barbel, it was hard holding bottom as the river had been on the rise, there is a really art to casting letting out a bow of line and waiting for your weight to hit bottom before seting your rod on the stand

    12. Where you are if you had fished to your right .Theres a bush and a serious undercut . Its full of carp and barble . Big chub will also hide under the under cut. Now back in the 80s a diver whent into the river at that point and said that he seen a massive Pike just under the undercut. The last time that i fished the Ribble was about 30 years ago and i now live in Ireland and miss this River. Lots of fish and safe.

    13. Tightening up to a 4oz + feeder is the wrong way to fish a big river. You need to fish with a fairly big bow in your line by casting upstream and then pay out a good amount of line. Having a bow in the line will not affect the bites at all, they will register on the tip just the same but you will be able to use a much lighter feeder. It's trial and error how much line you pay out but it's worth learning.

    14. Would lov to see you and your Dad having a go at other types of fishing . What a great find this channel is . TY for the content and effort it takes to do this .
