Lara Croft is the most iconic woman in video game history. Say what you will about the series these days, but seeing a woman in skimpy shorts and tank tops will transport some people back to 1996. This releases adventurous memories of Tomb Raider. Ancient civilizations were discovered, ancient tombs plundered and pyramids climbed.

I mean the pyramid, of course. In any case, Lara Croft is one of the most famous and popular characters in video game history. I’m ashamed to admit that the good Lara has been on my pile of shame for almost 20 years. Anyone can have mine, but luckily managed

To pull Lara Croft out of the barren, smelly pile. If you’re wondering how I dared keep the good Mrs. Croft waiting so long, I had no idea either. Then I started the game and I immediately realized why. But I didn’t let it get me down

And I’m now ready to go through the game step by step with you. As always, our journey will be packed with background knowledge, so that even Tomb Raider veterans will hopefully not be left out. In the Tomb Raider community it is also very popular to rank the individual levels.

So that’s what I’m adding at the end. So you can expect a lot of Tomb Raider content in what makes Top Raider one so special? Although Lara is now primarily associated with Crystal Dynamics, Tomb Raider had its beginnings at a relatively small English development studio called Core Design.

To be more precise, Lara had her beginnings in her head. One of the British developers called Toby Guard. The name Lara Croft itself actually comes from a telephone book. The developers really wanted a recognizable British name and looked to the English Yellow Pages for inspiration. Inspired by Indiana Jones and Prince of Persia,

Lara was intended to portray a strong female heroine. In the design document, the choice of a female lead was justified in a somewhat more disgusting way. The main reason why the main character in this game is female is because it is more pleasing to the eye to constantly look at a woman.

Additionally, a male player feels more psychologically connected to a female character, often out of a certain macho protective impulse. So how many games at the time were male, the intended target group, despite the female protagonist? In fact, Lara became an icon

Before Raider One even came out . In 1996, the Tom Raider demo was presented for the first time at E3 in Los Angeles. Later that same year, Tomb Raider became the marketing focus of Eidos, the game’s publisher, and three models portrayed Lara at the European video game trade show CTS.

It was an instant hit with attendees at the show. In general, Top Reader’s marketing campaign was incredibly successful. Male players were already gathering at the thought of soon being able to control Lara. She represented a strong heroine for female players, who were still very rare, especially back then.

However, Lara was heavily sexualized in the advertising for the game. Sales figures confirm the effectiveness of this approach. One year after its release, 2.5 million units of the game had already been sold. In total, Lara Croft’s first adventure in video game form sold 7 million copies. For comparison,

Two Raider one was bought more often than the entire Silent Hill main series. So the marketing was very successful. Nevertheless, Lara’s creator in particular was disappointed with the proportions. Lara Croft was Toby Guard’s baby and he didn’t really want to see her portrayed in such a suggestive way.

To be honest, the thought really makes me sick. Imagine creating a character just so some money-hungry suits can fetishize her for money. Nonetheless, Tomb Raider was a success with fans and critics. With a rating of 91 on Meter Criticism, Tomb Raider is one of the elite of Playstation One.

In fact, the game was first released on the Sega Saturn. Eidos had made a deal with Sega, releases on Playstation One and PC followed. It wasn’t that easy for me to get the game running these days. The PS1 disc that I bought specifically for this video was completely scratched and unplayable.

The German version of Top Raider was terrible. I couldn’t start my recording program properly and the controller simply wasn’t recognized. Even though I paid for the game twice, I still have to resort to emulation. Retro Gaming summarizes unfortunately topics of development such as the design philosophy and the revolutionary developer programs

I will cover in the course of the game. As always, I will just focus on the story of Top Raider one. So I won’t spoil any other part. Let’s start the adventure. Before we get into the opening scene, it’s worth taking a look at the game’s manual. You know, the little book

That everyone misses these days but no one read back then. It says that Lara is the daughter of a British aristocrat named Lord Henry Croft. After surviving a plane crash in the inhospitable vastness of the Himalayas and being forced to survive on her own, Lara turned away from her privileged life.

This happened when she was 21. The following eight years were marked by many global adventures. Her family became estranged from her. And Lara financed her adventures by publishing books about her experiences, and Lara also became quite famous through her discoveries. Which leads us to the opening scene of the game. What do

You have to do to get that kind of attention from them? It’s hard to say, but they’re doing pretty well so far. Great. Even though I’m not actually the one who wants her. So? Unfortunately not, says Lynn Nadler. Look for them from Nadler Technologies. You know, the creators of all glory.

Keep your mouth shut! Let’s leave. Feast your eyes on it. Lara. So, are you getting a little curious? If money is all you have to offer then you might like this. Peru majestic mountain ranges, steep walls of sheer ice, wild rocks, clefts, howling winds. And then there is the animal.

An ancient artifact with mysterious powers, hidden deep within the lost tomb of Cavallo. I want this piece of jewelry. You could leave tomorrow. Do you have any plans for tomorrow? The City of the Senses is cryptic and difficult to understand for a first-time player . A huge nuclear explosion blows some artifact free,

Then it is revealed that the dark magician from Yukio is simply trapped in that artifact. Then we see and hear Lara Croft for the first time. It’s hard to say, but they’re doing pretty well so far. It was spoken in German by Gabriele Limbach. It’s possible

That the voice sounds familiar to you, even if you haven’t played Tomb Raider. She is the voice of various navigation systems and the WDR’s automated traffic jam radio. Friday last week in Berlin. Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma on a working visit to Chancellor Schröder. You can say whatever you want about the German dubbing.

But in America you don’t say Lara Croft herself. There’s a traffic jam on the A3 again and you have to waste your short time on this wonderful earth locked in a motorized box. In any case, Lara is played by Jacqueline Cutler and her assistant Larson were located and hired.

She is supposed to travel to Peru and recover Lopez’s brain from an ancient burial site. Nutella Hot Head Pack out! As if we all need to know who that is. Peck isn’t an ancient Mayan king or anything, because the name was invented specifically for this game.

That’s why the player can’t know who that is yet. But you’ll find out as the game progresses. In the menu we are greeted by a beautiful melody. The menu with the rotating 3DS sets looks really cool, although the background jetpack shows that the game is already showing its age.

But before we start the actual game, there is a really cool tutorial. To familiarize yourself with controlling Lara, there are a few training courses at the home of Lara, the Croft Men. I know Lara was disinherited and is now supposedly supporting herself through books.

But if she didn’t happen to write a new Lord of the Rings trilogy , I seriously wonder whether she didn’t provide some financial support. Lara herself explains to the player how the controls work. Okay, then let’s play around a bit. Press the jump button.

The good Mrs. Croft is probably one of the most mobile video game characters ever, although she is actually equipped with the same tank controls as Resident Evil or Silent Hill. I had no idea how agile and flexible this outdated control system could be. It’s like grandma taking a few hot

Steps onto the parquet and dropping off at Helene Fischer’s. Never thought the old thing still had moves like that. Lara can jump in all four directions. Everything beautifully staged. Since the developers didn’t believe in motion capture, Lara’s hand movements were animated. It’s really funny to read

How much the developers gossiped about motion capture. You have to know, these days almost every game is animated by Move Cap. We’ll talk enough about Lara’s different moves. I would like to briefly show you two special tricks in the main game, which I unfortunately only found out afterwards.

First there is this wonderful handstand. Lara is also able to create an elegant body in the water. After Lara plants in the water, the tutorial ends. So, now I’ll take off my wet clothes. This saying regarding wet things really caused a stir in the Tomb Raider community at the time.

Many players thought there was a secret code or cheat to undress Lara. But that doesn’t exist. Believe me, I searched for a long time, for the sake of science, of course. Sure, there are mods and hacks for the PC version that make the dream come true. As already mentioned,

We players should also respect the wishes of the creator and not just limit it to appearance. The journey starts in a snowy mountain range in Peru. Lara opens the gate she found. But wolves suddenly burst out from inside and attack their guide named Carlos.

Our heroine jumps down from the gate and gives us a very dated action scene. Unfortunately Carlos got it. By the way, we only find out its name through the design document or the official Prima Guide. Lara goes alone into the now uncovered cave.

As the stone gate closes behind her, she raises her eyebrow and the adventure begins. What you immediately notice is the rather reserved soundtrack at the beginning. This immediately gave me a feeling of isolation. If Lara follows the wolves’ footsteps, she gets deeper into the cave.

The first fail trap is still waiting for you here. But Lara has no problem avoiding the traps. But it’s worth deviating from the main path right at the beginning, because the very first secret is hidden here. This satisfying sound is played whenever you discover a so-called secret.

In this case the secret is a small one. I think it’s brilliant that the first mystery was placed so early in the beginning. This immediately piqued my curiosity and I was determined to unravel the secrets of this mystery, this place. As soon as Lara advances further into the cave, the first enemies appear,

The bats. These little creatures don’t pose much of a threat. One shot and they’re gone. As soon as Lara jumps through a hole, she discovers the first signs of man-made architecture. In my opinion, the design of the door is clearly inspired by the art of the Inca, an indigenous people of Peru.

A door blocks the way. Looking at the compass doesn’t help at all. At first I thought all along that the compass would show where Lara needed to go. But this is not the case! The compass always points north, just like the real compass. The guide also provides a reasonable justification for this.

The feature is completely useless without a guide. I only got the guide afterwards. Because I wanted to experience Top Reader as virginally as possible. In the next section , the first wolves will attack Lara if you act smart. Which obviously didn’t happen, it was worth killing the wolves from above.

Since there was no tutorial, I first had to get used to the mechanics: Lara automatically shoots at the enemy, but also just keeps shooting at corpses if you don’t restart shooting. However, your pistols have infinite ammunition. So you don’t get much punishment for massacring the corpses.

Passing the suspension bridges, Lara finds this skeleton JPEG. You have to get used to it now. Many objects in the levels are not 3D, but 2D and simply rotate with Lara. Passing the suspension bridges you reach this destroyed stone bridge. A purple crystal waits on the other side.

But if you mess up the jump like I did, there’s a rabid bear waiting on the ground. The bear represents the first real challenge. Even though the fight looks very awkward, I and Lara managed to kill a bear. When I get back to the top

I find out that the floating crystal isn’t a treasure or anything. This is a memory crystal. Saving the PS1 version was strictly limited to these crystals. Similar to Resident Evil one, only more strictly regulated. Because some of these crystals were really sparsely distributed. This limitation didn’t exist at all in the PC version.

You could save at any time. I know Tomb Raider purists will hate me for this, but I definitely used war saves. But write in the comments if you really want to see me suffer. If there is enough interest, I would like to get Tomb Raider again on the original PS1

And then play through it in its purest form using only memory crystals. Deeper inside, Lara must fight wolves again, this time in a temple overgrown with lilies. The music used when a fight starts is really bomb. The door that Lara has to open here is timed.

She has to quickly overcome the structures to the left of the switch to get through. Please don’t ask me how the Inca built a timed door using clay, wood and stone. After this door there is an even larger entrance, which was again blocked by a timer door.

If Lara is quick enough here, she will complete the first level of the caverns . I was really pissed here that I didn’t find all the secrets. In retrospect, I know I just didn’t look hard enough. Once I play through it, you don’t know exactly when the level ends and when it doesn’t.

Also, at first I thought there was only one secret per level. Oh how wrong I was. The second level is also the Demon Level , which was distributed in magazines shortly after the release. Back then it was still pretty important for publishers to sell their games via demos.

Nowadays you can be lucky if you see a gameplay trailer before the release , let alone a demo. In this part of the cave we now also find decorated walls, stone and stone sculptures of the forgotten civilization that lived here at some point.

This is where Tomb Raider’s ingenious level design becomes noticeable for the first time. The goal in this area is to find a key for this door. To achieve this, Lara must search several hidden rooms. The interior of the rooms immediately shows that they were once living areas.

This room, for example, has a small fireplace and leather holder. However, the subsequent wall full of skulls shows that the people who previously lived here were perhaps not the most peaceful. I don’t know. I don’t think a wall with thousands of creepy skeleton skulls right next to the sleeping area is that cool,

Although there are also frightening interior decorations. The thing with the skulls would be rather untypical for an Inca civilization. The Maya were already much better known for their artistic depictions of skulls. Anyway, this is a fictional civilization led by the fictional Cavallo Pack.

In the next room, Lara finds some old vases and a skeleton key. I really thought I was doing something wrong here. I kept trying to pick up a vase, but it didn’t work. Except for items relevant to the story or puzzle, Lara cannot loot anything. You can’t loot gravesites

In a game called Tomb Looter . Above all, I thought when I picked up this little man, I can plunder. But that’s not the case, you’ll need it later for a door. There is still a waterhole in the middle of the area. This leads to a small pool and a hidden one.

After Lara uses the skeleton key, she finds these impressive buildings. The fact that red accents were used here is no coincidence – for the Mayans, red was a color that signaled death and rebirth. Tombs were often painted vermilion red. Since Lara is ultimately looking for a burial site, the color is very appropriate.

Inside, Lara now has to overcome various platforms in order to open the doors at the bottom of the building little by little. The game is even so cute and always has a pool placed under the spring section so that if you mess up, Lara will end up in the water.

Believe me, giving isn’t so nice later on. This almost feels like another tutorial where players can further refine their control of Lara. After a series of swinging traps, which, by the way , can make you sinister, you get to this door. But the game really takes you by surprise because the switch

Next to the door activates a trap and Lara ends up in a pool of water. In the end, there’s just a bear waiting for Lara, who makes wonderful use of the pool and the pillars to make her life difficult. Stupid bear! The interior rooms are becoming increasingly more beautiful and elaborately decorated.

The red accents are now also joined by orange ones. As if they wanted to underline the great importance of this site for the forgotten civilization. By the way, Lara has to use the little man from above here. The city of WK Bomber is now complete. Things really get going in the next level.

Right at the beginning the game reveals the same way it did at the switch. So far, water has always been a safe safety net for Lara, but not here. She is immediately caught in an inescapable pull and thrown down a waterfall . Wolves are also waiting for Lara here.

Whenever Lara goes back up and messes up, you have to go back up and start again. When Bloodborne lost the vote and unfortunately won, I thought I was in for a cheap playing time. Flute whistled. There’s nothing more frustrating than messing up a jump and having to climb back up that stupid waterfall.

The biggest joke is that you don’t even have to climb up there. The aim here is to repair this machinery. But we don’t have the gears for it. But there is a consolation prize. Lara finds a new weapon here. The shotgun fights. Lara comes out of this Grünenthal through a few tricky passages.

What happened now really shocked me. A red raptor just roams around here, nothing to me, nothing to you. But Lara simply knocks him down without saying anything. She just finds the greatest archaeological discovery of all time and thinks gun goes boom boom. By the way, the shotgun was quite useful here,

But the game actually goes one step further. A T. Rex suddenly comes out of nowhere and gets in Lara’s way. It was really masterfully staged. Although the moment would have scratched me even harder if the raptors hadn’t been there before. Lara faced the dinosaur like a heroic femme fatale.

Man versus beast, head to head. No, I immediately looked for fun in Heilbronn and jumped at the dinosaur. There’s a lot to explore in this part, countless niches where stuff and evil raptors hide. I really like this valley here. Not to mention the incredible coolness factor that the dinosaurs bring with them.

Here Lara finds all three gears that she has to use on the machinery. This allows it to be operated and the water is diverted. I really like this type of level design. You go out into the valley and look for items that are important at the very beginning of the level.

Lara climbs into the dangerous territory of the dinosaurs to open a path. Not because of the dinosaurs. Even redirecting the water primarily ensures that the waterfall disappears and Lara can go through it. The Lost Time would have been a really great level even without the dinosaurs .

But the dinosaurs topped it all off. By now Tomb Raider had completely captivated me. Some players might be bothered by the departure from reality. But for me it made the game a thousand times more interesting, because if dinosaurs are let loose on Lara, who knows what else is lurking for them.

The next level is Lara’s Tomb starts in this square room and first faces the worst enemy in the game. No joke. The game is designed in such a way that the rolling stones usually knock Lara down first. For example, it’s extremely difficult to escape in this hallway.

If you don’t know beforehand that the stone is coming, Lara goes all the way up the hallway. Does she see her goal? Discussion Lara now has to fight through the paths to the right and left to open a path to Shion. It is definitely worth mentioning that the gravesite was completely colorfully decorated.

After Lara is almost picked off by a pack of wolves, she is able to move a block for the first time. Blocks that Lara can move are always colored a little differently than the rest. Good game design here.

This is also where Lara is faced with spikes for the first time, causing the player to panic. Should he screw up the jump. The space with the Scion itself is important. Creepy. In the middle a skeleton sits on a throne. Allegedly. It’s guarded by two terribly peculiar mummies,

The one on the left actually looking at Lara and following her with her head. Supposedly this mummy also falls on Lara. But I didn’t see that myself. As soon as Lara grabs the Scion, the walls suddenly start shaking. Apparently Lara activated something and a self-destruct. Gravesite sequence has been activated.

Did Abdallah build the tomb or what? Anyway, Lara flies out of the grave and into the water. When she emerges, Larsson greets her with his gun. He opens fire. Netter apparently betrayed Lara. Nevertheless, our heroine triumphs. Now you have my full attention. But do I have yours too?

Hello WhatsApp, if I can get my hands on you, of course you and the stupid piece of the Scion. If you really want to keep it, I’ll start your fucking moment. Let’s talk about the artifact. You can bet your life on that. Moment. I’m sorry. It’s one piece. Then where is the rest?

By last name? Pierre Dupont. Set for that. And where is he looking for it? You never will. So you think all this talk here is just keeping me out? No idea where his crooked crooks Wayne took him. They have to find out. Thanks. I will do that.

I have no idea where his crooked crooks took him. Boy, what awesome writing. I’ll definitely keep that in mind the next time Madame asks where our baby is without me. No idea where his crooked crooks Wayne took him. So Nero’s find is only part of the Scion.

Mettler hired a crook named Pierre Dupont to get the part. Lara now finds out where the second part of the Scion is the over the top way . Here, in the magnificent building of St. Francis. New temptations for me. My brothers rumor has it that the body of Toucan Gram

Is one of the three mythical rulers of the lost continent, Atlantis, and that a piece of the Atlantean heritage lies with him. A pendant divided between the three rulers of the lost continent of Atlantis in order to keep his immense powers in check. Powers beyond those of the Almighty, the Creator.

I feel dizzy at such possibilities, so close to my mortal self. Every night I ghost myself to get the idea out of my head. But it is truly a difficult test here. You polluter in an office of nice technology, probably the office of about yourself, Lara finds a book.

The content takes them to Greece, to an abandoned monastery. Before I was even able to get an overview, two lions attacked me. Yes. Lions in Greece. What the fuck? Lions are a stark upgrade compared to wolves. They can withstand a lot more and bite Lara several times in a row.

If you’re not careful. The design of the level is once again beautifully tailored to the team. Everything you would expect from ancient Greek building methods can be found here. Columns, various Greek letters as decorations and much more. In this monastery ruin there is a really cool jumping

Challenge, at the end of which a secret awaits Lara. In order to get to the top, Lara has to jump off ledges with a slope several times. If you’re as stupid as me, you even have to do this twice when you fall through the floor on the right.

As soon as Lara penetrates a little deeper into the monastery ruins, a gorilla attacks her. The hairy guy can even withstand more shots than the lions and can climb. So far, every opponent except the bats has been easy to outplay by using Lara to find Herod, not the gorillas.

Oh yes, and of course gorillas are not native to Greece either. It’s a shame somehow. In Peru the animals were still suitable for the environment minus the dinosaurs, of course. The wolves shown do not exist in Peru. But for me , gray wolves in Peru

Are easier to imagine than lions and gorillas in Greece. Lara actually only has to press a switch to enter the room. As soon as she leaves the room, crooked crooks almost cross her path. Pierre Dupont attacks them, Pierre endures a total of 20 shots, five more than the gorillas.

But then he doesn’t die. Pierre just disappears behind a pillar. The now cleared path allows Lara to slide down into a water channel. A crocodile is waiting for you here. Fighting underwater is simply not possible, which makes this croc much more dangerous.

However, Lara can turn off the water in the canal and finish off the beast. Crocodiles are also not native to Greece. The water channel flows into the main room of the level. There are four different doors depicting names Gate, Damocles, Neptune and Atlas. Before Thor became known as the blonde Marvel pretty boy,

He was known as the hammer-wielding thunder god in Norse mythology. There are corresponding traps waiting for Lara in his room. Using a lightning trap and a huge hammer, Lara overcomes the traps. She successfully finds a key. In Damocles’ room, several floating swords are waiting for Lara,

But they won’t do anything to her yet. The story of Damocles is about a courtier of the same name who dreamed of wealth and power in the fourth century BC. He asked his king Dionysus, the second, if he could also live in his luxurious life.

This granted him his wish on one condition. A sword dangled over the throne on which Damocles sat, attached to only a single PDA. The threat of the sword tormented Damocles so much that he quickly gave up the throne. The story has always been a metaphor for the fact that with power

Comes great responsibility and risk. I don’t think I need to explain explicitly how this relates to the room with floating swords. As soon as Lara picks up the key, the swords fall from above. Atlas is a figure in Greek mythology, not a god, but a titan.

Although the classic image of Atlas carrying the earth is common today, in mythology he actually supports the sky. He was punished by Zeus with this task. Modern interpretations, however, always represent Atlas with the globe. This image is reflected in the room in Prada, because here two stone balls want to take us away.

Neptune was the god of the sea in Roman mythology. Accordingly, his room is also filled with water. Apart from the fact that all four figures are from antiquity, I don’t see any thematic connection. In ancient Greece only Damocles and Atlas were an issue. Gate and Neptune were deities

Who definitely did not receive recognition in ancient Greece. Sure, these days we throw Neptune and Poseidon together, for example. I bet people back then would have had a problem with that. A cluster also implies to me that at least parts of these cities were built by Christians.

Many faiths and mythologies come together here. To me it seems like the developers deliberately used popular, easily recognizable ancient characters, to be honest I suspect that not much thought was given to thematic connection. With all four keys in tow, Lara can complete the level. The next level starts with a small water segment

Before a large arena is revealed. This level is also appropriately called Colosseum. In addition to the lions, the pier is also waiting for Lara here. I swear the stalker enemies in Two Trader are simply more annoying than the ones in Resident Evil Empire. Mister X doesn’t mind.

There are interesting paintings on the walls of the Colosseum. Such so-called frescoes were very popular in ancient Rome and Greece. They often depicted mythological figures, but also, as here, everyday life. Although Lara is actually in Greece, the art of the fresco is more reminiscent of Italian Renaissance frescoes.

So within the Greek monastery there are African animals. A Roman Colosseum with Italian Renaissance frescoes. However, the unrealistic thing about Tomb Raider is still the fact that a rich, spoiled brat is doing something with her life instead of just having fun at the expense of the ISS.

Lara has to explore the Colosseum step by step and unlock areas in order to finally end up in a water canal with coconut. The level actually ends in the water. The following level called Palace of Midas also starts immediately in a pool with a beautiful dolphin fresco.

Such frescoes were particularly popular in the pompous villas of ancient Rome. The central task in this level is to find three gold bars. To get to the bars, doors must be opened using levers. The game wants the lever combinations to correspond to the door being entered. But it is not described anywhere.

The lifting combination is written on the respective doors. For this door, for example, the first lever position must be guessed. Omega means lever up Y means the lever has to be down. The path to the bars is of course riddled with many traps, including

This new fire roller that forces the player to jump into the water. If you made a mistake. The hunt for the gold bars also takes you to this type of thermal bath, where crocuses and gorillas are waiting for Lara. In general, this level is extremely large, if you

Take a break while playing, it can quickly happen that you forget where you are and where you need to go. The developers actually planned to introduce an innovative 3D map that only shows the area that has already been explored. However, due to time pressure and limited hardware, this was rejected.

The Palace of Midas also includes a small garden, a hidden small section of the garden. Can Lara find the Magnus? A more powerful version of the pistols, but one that shoots slower and uses up ammo? To be honest, I’ve never had any ammunition problems. While researching the game,

I discovered that each weapon can be found multiple times. I could have found the Magnum in the Colosseum. I think it’s great that the developers included this. This ensures that the player will be able to collect every weapon sooner or later. I was worried because you could already collect Magnum and Uzi ammunition.

I haven’t owned any of the weapons yet. After a long search, Lara finally found the bars. Then I realize that these aren’t gold bars at all, but lead bars. However, the game really wants Lara to use gold bars in this wall. Luckily I came across the solution by chance. Lara actually has to

Use the lead bars in her hand to turn them into gold. As the name behind the hand suggests, this is the Hand of Midas. King Midas was a character from Greek mythology. He wanted the gods to turn everything he touched into gold. He felt the obvious disadvantages of this relatively quickly,

As his food and even his daughter also turned to gold. In Tomb Raider, the statue of Midas has the same powers. I found it very difficult to solve this puzzle for two reasons. Firstly, I simply didn’t know the story of King Midas before. Secondly, this is, in my opinion, the first time

That supernatural powers have been used. I know the dinosaurs aren’t exactly normal, but for me there’s still a world of difference between lizards and gold magic. With the three gold bars, Lara can actually leave Midas’ palace. Lara has barely left the Colosseum behind her when

She finds herself in a labyrinth of ancient waterways. Welcome to the cistern. Right at the beginning. Rats everywhere rats. No lions, no gorillas. Just those annoying rodents. The walls are all a bit green and the water also looks very unhealthy. In this level, Tomb Raider shows how diverse level design can be.

Lara has to play an ancient plumber and control the water level in order to be able to explore certain areas of the level. Of course, in addition to the rodents, there are also crocodiles that try to stop Lara from her goals. Two silver and one gold keys are hidden in the labyrinth-like cistern.

The platforming is starting to get really challenging. Pierre attacks Lara from time to time. As soon as Lara has found the three keys and is close to the end of the level, the game really trolls again. To finish the level, Lara actually just has to

Move this blog and jump in, she presses the lever here. Instead, three lions come running and attack them. The whole thing then at least leads to hidden media coverage and ammunition. The Cistern was a really cool level where Lara could channel her inner ancient Mario. The next level starts underwater again

And later flows into a larger sewer area. A few falling and climbing actions later, Lara finds herself in a small courtyard. Here Lara has to open different rooms using a blog and printing plates. But this time these rooms don’t have a spectacular team. In contrast to the Gate or Neptune Room for example.

In this area, Lara has to find two keys, only to be spit out using a ramp from a face carved into the wall. Lara now stands in front of an impressive entrance, two statues of centaurs on Lara’s left and right sides.

To open this door, Lara must find two levers in the lake area. As soon as she returns to the door, she experiences the following: You’re not going to tell me that Zoomtrader Creepy Body Horror has centaurs and I waited until now to play through this?

You know, as a gamer, over the years you’ve been spoiled for games you haven’t played yet. But apparently everyone kept this violent thing to themselves. The centaur shoots up disgusting, exploding meatballs, Lara is fast, agile and can withstand a lot. By far the most challenging opponent to date.

Oh yeah, and when he dies, he explodes too. Pia is also waiting behind the door for Lara, whose years of crooked crooks are finally numbered. Lara receives the second part of the Scion from him. He also gets a key that Lara can use to open the inside of the tomb.

Here rests Theo Khan, one of the two just rulers of Atlantis, who even after the visitation of the continent sought to rule foreign lands well in these days. He died without a child and his knowledge was not passed on. Be merciful to us. Theo came.

Theo Khan was one of the two rulers of Atlantis. The other was probably his gravesite. Lara has already plundered the two of them from Atlantis and moved them to build their civilization in Peru and Greece. After Lara deciphers the pictures on the wall. She receives a vision. Okay,

We have to process this for now while the vision starts. vial. A lot of pictures on the screen. I paused often. The images simply represent a few ancient civilizations and enemies like dinosaurs and lions that we meet in the game. The actual cat focuses on three obscured people

Who are clearly depicted as rulers of a pyramid. The pyramid is probably intended to represent Atlantis. Instead of being depicted on the wall earlier, three rulers are depicted in robes. In addition to Heck and Toucan, there was also one or a third.

Something happened between the three, which is why one ended up in chains, Atlantis sank and the third Scion was thrown away. In my opinion it also shows how one of the three uses his sword part to awaken some creature. Lara deduces from the vision the location of the third

Part of the Scion Egypt. Egypt has a completely different touch and differs well from the two previous places. The entire area is covered with sand and the walls and blocks are decorated with hieroglyphs. The level starts with a small block puzzle until we meet a new enemy, the puma.

The puma is a slightly stronger version of the lion. The developers really crapped on everything when it came to animals. There are no pumas in Egypt, but there are leopards . What we also have here is a sphinx whose face has fallen to the ground a few too many times.

This is the Sphinx that awaits you at home. If you ask your mother if you can visit the Sphinx and your mom asks if you already have the Sphinx at home? Seriously? The face of these swings is flatter than your mother’s hills, than the hills of your multiple fields in Holland.

As soon as you get too close to the Sphinx, Lara attacks a mummy jumping around, the Egypt level doesn’t hesitate for long and immediately takes out the supernatural nature of an opponent. But I have a slight fear that the mummy is just a giant monkey. Hopping around looks very similar.

Here, Lara can see areas of the level to which she does not yet have access. It annoyed me a little because I thought Lara would be able to pull herself up the fence. In the middle of a small pool of water is a pillar with four notches. You would think that you would

Now find four items in the level and have to use them there. But that’s not the case, at least for now. Lara has to go through the Sphinx to move forward. Some Egyptian statues are shown here. The face resembles the statue of Ramses the Great.

At Zoomtrader the statues seem to be more of a decoration. Further inside, the decoration on the walls becomes more colorful and complex. At that time, the Egyptians embellished temples and tombs with such wall paintings. They often contained symbolic representations of deities, pharaohs, animals or objects. The colorful period

Of mural paintings in TO is not all that unrealistic. Because of Egypt’s dryness and the darkness of the tombs in which such works of art were mostly created, the colors have often barely faded. In addition to the pumas and mummies, there are also crocodiles lurking in the water for Lara.

At least Nile crocodiles are actually native to Egypt. In this level, Lara has to demonstrate her acrobatics again and master some tricky jumps. Blocks are also being used more and more, so players have to make their own way. With this mirror here I thought there was some cool light waiting for me.

But that’s not the case, because the game doesn’t have any real lighting. Everything is somehow bright on its own. It’s okay. Otherwise the game would look something like this. The level really dragged for me towards the end. There is also a thin space and various platform rooms.

Overall, the level called The City of Cameroon was a bit too long for me. Let’s see what the Obelisk of Cameroon is all about. The goal of this level is to grab a few artifacts from the middle of a central pillar. To do this, bridges must be lowered,

The switches of which are distributed throughout the level. The focus in this area is primarily on the platforms. Tomb Raider’s maps were designed using a grid system. This essentially divides the entire level into squares. For a running jump, Lara always needs at least one square run-up.

If you try to jump in the middle of this process, Lara won’t react. For me, this meant that I was just stretching squares like crazy every time I ran Jump. In the game it doesn’t matter if you find the controls awkward. It forces the player to adapt to the specifics of the game,

Not the other way around. Nowadays games are developed differently. It often feels like every game is designed so that even the most incompetent player can finish it. I’m not talking about excess ability option, the fact that people with disabilities can also play games is a mega change in the industry.

This constant hand-holding really gets on my nerves. As a result, something essential is lost. I’ve always found the challenge of climbing while playing boring. Whether in God of War or on, you simply move the stick in one direction and the character moves to the raider. Makes climbing really exciting.

Distances have to be estimated, routes planned and every step counts. Just like in real climbing. But that only works so well if you are punished really severely for it. When you mess up. The first artifact I managed to get after playing around for a long time was the scarab.

What you pick up looks more like some kind of pot to me. In Egyptian mythology, the scarab doesn’t play such a small role because it represents rebirth and the cycle of life. The name Scarab has its own grace. All this for a beetle that is simply called a dung beetle in this country.

Please appreciate that too. Maybe you sometimes or often feel like a dung beetle. But you’re definitely a scarab to someone out there. The second artifact is the seal of Anubis is one of the most important Egyptian deities. He was the god of embalming and mortuary rites, depicted with a jackal’s head.

For the Egyptians, a seal was an important symbol of authority, often used to authenticate documents, for example. The third artifact is the so-called Anchor Cross. It represents life and immortality. The fourth and final artifact is the Eye of Horus, the Eye of the Falcon God. Horus represents protection, royal power and health.

I actually find what the game is doing quite innovative. Lara is now completely sent back to the beginning of the first level of Egypt. Do you remember the column with the notches? This isn’t a real column at all, it’s the Cameron obelisk. Lara must now insert the collected artifacts into the obelisk

To open the tomb. So the level is completed. I really missed a map here. Because of my constant getting lost, I wasted a lot of time in this level. Lara is attacked right at the beginning of the next level by so-called Atlan warriors, as well as the centaurs,

Who are actually called Atlantean hunters. Do these creatures explode once Lara defeats them? After Lara defeats the creatures and climbs the stairs , she finds herself in a huge cavernous chamber. In the middle of this cave is a huge sphinx. In this level, Lara has to find several crosses

And place them in the appropriate holes on the Sphinx. The game also has a really cinematic tracking shot here. As soon as you climb onto the forehead of the Sphinx. Lara now has to climb the cave walls to unlock different rooms that contain either loot or crosses.

The centaurs are waiting for us again. While climbing, flying Atlantean creatures suddenly appear and, like the Atlantean hunter, also shoot exploding bullets. It is now also possible for us to get hold of the UX here. But it’s inexplicable to me how the developers came up with the idea of incorporating something like that.

You have to make a daring jump onto an invisible platform to collect the socialites. This is not an error in the simulation. Even the official guide says you have to jump onto this invisible plate. I liked the non-natural elements, but that just seems unnecessarily complicated and lazy to me.

But our efforts are rewarded. The orcs are, in my opinion, the best weapons in the game. I just wish I had realized this sooner. I flooded the game with ammunition. Still, I almost always used the pistols because of the infinite ammo. Once Lara has used the crosses, she can enter the swings and

Promptly flop into a huge underground Ze. Two giant statues lurk beneath the surface. Really scary. Both statues resemble the deities Anubis and Osiris. Lara now has to use levers to reduce the water level in the underground in order to get inside the Osiris statue.

If she climbs the entire statue, she will get a scarab at the end and will find herself on the steps at the very beginning of the level. A few Atlantean warriors immediately try to take them down. Fighting the three of them at once is really tricky.

In such moments, the only thing that really helps is spam and hoping for the best. Now Lara can finally penetrate the heart of the tomb. A well-known enemy is already waiting for them here. Lassen appears to have recovered well from his defeat in Peru. But he makes the same mistake again.

He stands in Lara Croft’s way. Lara pumps the square skull full of lead again. The interior of the site is otherwise covered with a lot of beautiful wall paintings that I haven’t seen anywhere else in the levels. Tomb Raider has pulled this off really well so far.

The further Lara gets into the tomb, the more detailed and multifaceted the environment becomes. What we really like about is that this time they stayed true to a mythology and an ancient civilization. Lara can now grab the third part of the Scion since we’ve finally beaten the little beast. Hello

, have you let the lights go out. If you want to put it that way. Well, your little vacation trip is over. It’s time I got back what you stole from me. Let’s take a look inside the box. Go ahead, kill her. Does he hear about idiots? Let’s go. Come on, be honest.

Who of you doesn’t know this? Mom gave you something inedible to take to school. Mom, saying that would break her heart. Instead of munching on the food, you want to throw it away. In the evening you realize with horror that you accidentally left your food in the lunch box.

But before you can get to your backpack, you see your mother standing in front of the backpack and she calls out loudly. Let’s take a look inside the box. Yes, yes, sorry. Okay, the Woyzeck thing is really giving me weird ideas. Now moving on to Tomb Raider.

Lara follows the ship to a yacht in which she secretly sneaks in and in the evening the boat arrives at an island and Lara jumps into the water before anyone spots her. The next level also starts directly under water until you realize that you are in a mine.

But the second realization is even worse. Lara had all her weapons taken away rather than go back to poking around in some caves of ancient civilization. Is this level now a modern mine? The design of the doors, blocks and levers was also adjusted accordingly. Lara’s first goal is to recover three fuses.

Of course, she also wants her weapons back as quickly as possible. It really took me a while to warm up to this level. Here, for example, there is a very similar task with the rolling stones. You can see a passage here, but it is blocked.

This kept me thinking for a long time until I noticed that the balls reset themselves every time and I just have to be fast enough. The first fuse is hidden behind it. The entire level is really nicely internally connected again. That means

You often have to go back to the start because then something new is unlocked. A lever in the mine, for example. Crazy the boat, which in turn unlocks a whole new section at the beginning. In this section you are also very subtly told who actually owns this mine.

The next fuse is hidden behind these blocks. But then suddenly a cowboy comes and attacks Lara! Actually no problem. But since Lara doesn’t have any weapons, I completely panicked. But in the rush I managed to make this absolutely epic jump. Do you know what made that moment so epic for me?

It wasn’t scripted. No predetermined action scene can give me the feeling I had when I landed that jump. It was hinted at a little earlier in Katrin. But here we see it again in black and white. The mines were built in a volcano and Lara now has to be careful of lava.

Lava is an instant death for teachers. Here I found the first of Lara’s weapons. I actually already mentioned the shotgun , how cool is it that Lara actually carries the shotgun? No. Okay, then I’ve mentioned it now. Then I can also directly address how varied the Tomb Raider levels are within the levels.

So it’s good that the levels differ from each other, but there’s usually variety within the levels so that it doesn’t get boring. This level here, for example, starts in a small water high section, leads to a mine and then into this lava swamp. Really. The challenges don’t let up either.

I had to chew on this situation for a really long time. Lara slides down the front and back here. I was really perplexed because the distance is too great to jump completely across. What you first have to realize is the following: Although the platforms

On the left and right are also angled, Lara does not slide down there automatically. Really mean. But well, the developers wanted to take me on board and they achieved their goal. This mini section also praises the cowboy again, who we can now make feel our vengeance thanks to the shotgun.

He had Lara’s Magnum with him. For the final backup, Lara only has to operate a conveyor belt. When I put that backup in, my game seized up and the house somehow showed up twice. Luckily, this glitch doesn’t stop Lara from progressing. She finds her pistols in the house.

Lara then has to mine back into the lava. She has to face the Skater Kid past a few TNT boxes. The Boss Arena is even designed perfectly for this wannabe Tony Hawk. For me, the fights against humans are the weakest part of the game. Most of the time you

Just have to stare at the guy and fire Lara’s guns to win. Assuming Lara has enough medics with her, of course. The fight against the ghetto is at least a little more varied, thanks to the skateboard. Lara ultimately kills the boy in cold blood and takes him away to the orcs.

You know what I’m just now really noticing? How is it that the ancient tombs were all full of modern ammunition, weapons and milk? But hey, some things you just have to accept and that’s okay! After the Skater Kid, there are a few narrow, winding rooms waiting for them, so

Everything has the same texture. It’s sometimes really difficult to see where it should go. At the other end, the Lunchbox Boy with a shotgun is waiting for Lara. Now she has finished every one of the people. Lara now has to get into this huge ancient building,

The structure of which suggests that it is a pyramid. The next level starts with a short cat in Nether, activated something with the three parts of the Scion and the volcanic island turned out to be a disguised pyramid. We could already see this pyramid in the vision

That Lara had in the tomb of Tiu. So she is now in the legendary Atlantis and. It definitely doesn’t look like I imagined. What the dark? Where did we end up here? This design is more similar to Doom than to On Switch or Indiana Jones, which is funny

Because the developers were very keen on Team Trader wanting to stand out from the crowd of darker ones , especially when it was released . They definitely did that too. Do not get me wrong. Those fabric-covered walls and hellish monsters just reminded me of Doom. Lara now only encounters Atlantean creatures here.

Apparently they were conceived here, as they break out of these giant balls, which are probably incubators, and attack Lara. Conversely, this means that Mettler exposed the things in Peru, Greece or Egypt. Or was the Centauri disguised as a statue also conceived here? Does he have animals, maybe he can take him with him?

And the most important question: Who cares about the game? Okay, okay, fictional character that is supposed to represent my Hedda. I will continue. From here on out, the level design only has one mission: kill teachers, the monsters that fall and the platform work together harmoniously and make the player’s life hell.

This level is also a lot more linear than the previous levels. Instead of the areas being connected to each other, Lara is now pushed from section to section. The variety itself is welcome, but a little is lost for me. For me, the AHA moments that I had every time I found out

How the individual areas of a level were connected to each other are now missing. Lara has to fight her way further up the pyramid, and the design becomes more and more disgusting. Towards the end, the tissue-covered walls pulsate and the floor is completely covered by some kind of fleshy mass.

At some point Lara arrives in a kind of throne room , where three thrones are set up, presumably for the three Atlantean rulers that Lara saw in the Scion vision. At the end of the level, the developers have placed another really hectic fight with two Atlantis dogs. In the midst of the chaos

, I noticed that one of the creatures was shooting at Lara. Upon closer inspection, the monster is just mimicking Lara’s moves. This is the Atlantic Lara. To everyone who wanted a naked lord. Here is the unclothed version of Lara Velvet eyebrows and bones, just the way you wanted them.

Since Body Horror, T Bone Lara really imitates every movement here, we can also lure her into a lava pool. The official money states that this imitation was a ploy by Atlantis to finally defeat Lara, as well as the hand of a teenager. While playing, this plan went awry.

There is now nothing between Lara and the Scion. You can’t do that. We drove through the wild frost, abusing his powers and stealing our powers. You can’t do that. I destroyed the bandage. Who paid our people and challenged me with our own army.

Our warriors lured from the pyramid so that you can experience the creative power of the pyramids you could use for your destructiveness. Blunt, look at you! None of you have a shred of ingenuity in your heads. Being a spendthrift requires responsibility. Theo Khan You

Desecrated a holy sacrificial site out of sheer greed and misused it as a bread factory. A new generation born to survive. Now they’re minced meat. And we will put you, Nadler, into stasis. Covering your veins and feet, your heart and a sick brain with frozen blood.

Look your eternal restlessness in the eye, NASA. You won’t find any peace either and your damn Ryu will be a cool twist towards the end. So Nuclear was one of the three rulers of Atlantis. It is also responsible for the downfall of civilization.

Because of her machinations, she was frozen by Tito, Kahn and copilot. So the scene at the very beginning showed her eternal prison being exposed. What really annoys me about the scene is that Theo Kahn has the same voice as Larsson in German. You

Desecrated your holy sacrificial site out of sheer greed and used it as a bread factory. Unfortunately not, says Lena Adler is looking for her from Nadler Technologies. You could have slapped a voice filter over it like you did. Well, since they are celebrating their

Reopening, I assume that evolution is at a dead end. Barely. Of course selection, the spread of new, fresh beings will stimulate and strengthen and advance new struggles. Even new races create a form of evolution. So a kick in the ass. The silly wretches have no idea.

The fall of Atlantis struck a race of carrier weaklings and threw them back to the roots of survival. This is what the world needs, not exhausted in this way. We’re 15 seconds late for an abortion. Not without being the heart of the operation. They feel seamless. The big plan is

To accelerate the evolution of humanity through its monsters. Let’s see what an Atlas Creation can do. An epic boss fight begins. The huge half-baked skeleton monster somehow reminds me of God from Silent Hill three. I didn’t think Zoomtrader and Silent Hill had overlapping points.

The monster chases after Clara and tries to catch her. Unfortunately, the attacking tactics that worked great throughout the game no longer work here. You have to know that the hardest thing about the boss is not his attack pattern or the movement, but the boss arena itself. I kept dying

Because I accidentally jumped down with Lara. Simply walking around the Titan and shooting was the solution to the puzzle. As a result, this boss fight, which is actually very epic, is rather boring. Once Lara defeats the monster, she must continue searching for Metzler.

After all, Lara still has a score to settle with her. The guide describes the level here as the door of the game, in which the difficulty level is set to the highest level. I definitely cannot agree with that. The level is tough, yes, but through the entire gaming experience

You eventually get used to the level of difficulty and anticipate when the game wants to take a step. What a player should be fascinated by now is the amount of content on offer here. If you count the tutorial, Tomb Raider has a whopping 16 levels in the original version.

As I have already described, the levels are all very varied. Be it the design, the textures or the gameplay. That wasn’t a given then, just as it is today. When the developers were asked about this revolutionary 3D engine and room editor, they had the following to say about it

. Paul just developed the 3D engine. Yes, and that’s how it was back then. The genius Paul Douglas, together with Gwen Romero, built a flexible 3D engine including an easy-to-use room editor in six months. It’s really impressive what a small, passionate team has achieved in such a short time.

To end the action debacle once and for all, Lara destroys the thing and the entire pyramid begins to collapse. The game now unleashes a lot of creatures on Lara. Your path is now peppered with lava traps and tricky puzzles. Here in the very last level I also found out

That if Lara walks slowly, she can simply step through the spikes. You can really tell that the developers had fun with it. Setting up lots of nasty traps again. As I said, thanks to experience, but everything is doable. The real final boss fight takes place with Nadler in this huge chamber.

This fight is simply worlds better than the one against the giant monster. In this arena, Lara’s acrobatics are an advantage and not a disadvantage. Just like before. Nela flies around and shoots exploding organs at us. The fight even has two phases, because as soon as Lara defeats the flying butlers,

She attacks Lara again, but then unfortunately she is just like any other human opponent without posing any major challenge. I suspect that the second phase is intended to be more of a surprise and not a challenge. Now Lara has to make a few daring jumps before she can escape from the pyramid.

As in the whole game, in contrast to the boss fight, the platforming at the end represents another tough challenge. The level ends with a rapid slide that leads to freedom. Yes, and that’s it folks, this was Tomb Raider in all its glory. Six people created this masterpiece. Really? Hats off. Tomb Raider

Is a really tough game, while its style thought it needed to be simpler to appeal to female audiences, Prada simply took a completely different route. Despite the targeted male target group and the difficult gameplay, Tomb Raider is still very popular today, especially among female fans. For me, Tomb Raider is

The hardest game I’ve played on the PS1 so far. But it always remains fair. At least most. The climbing and platforming coupled with the level design were truly the highlight of the game for me. When it comes to the combat and the story, I think Tomb Raider is

A little weaker, what it lacks in the combat, but the game makes up for it in the variety of enemies. And what the story lacks is well replaced by the consistently good atmosphere. Pride one is really a great game that has quickly earned a big place in my gamer heart.

At the beginning I promised you a level ranking. The ranking was purely based on my personal opinion. If you don’t like my list, please write your ranking in the comments. Place 16 is the home of Lara Weil Tutorial Place 15 is the city of Canon. This level just dragged too much for me.

14th place is the caverns. Not a bad level, but it still has that tutorial feel. Place 13 is the grave of Cavallo. Just because of the stupid boulder that took me here. Twelfth place for me is Saint Francis Volley. I thought the main room with the four different doors

Of the ancient figures was really cool, but the challenges in the rooms themselves were sometimes really unfair and annoying. Space, Atlantis, the dinghy. Being leveled is not my thing. Not a bad level, but definitely not in my top ten. Tenth place The city wants Bamba. I find the level really atmospheric,

Because here for the first time I had the feeling that I was on the trail of a civilization that was thought to be lost. Ninth place The Colosseum, I really liked the design of the Colosseum. Fighting lions in the middle of the arena was really something. Eighth place The Tomb of the Toucan.

The moment with the statue that turns out to be an Atlantean hunter is still etched in my bones. Seventh place The Great Pyramid. The boss fight against the giant was okay and the first Mettler phase was actually really good, which really made the level shine. The platform areas

Especially at the lava and at the end sixth place The Obelisk of Cameron, the hunt for the levers to unlock the bridges to the artifacts was really fun. I found the fact that the level ends at the beginning of the previous level to be quite surprising and innovative.

Fifth place The Palace of Midas. Even though this stupid lead, ingot and hand of Midas puzzle really annoyed me, the level is still fun. In the end, I can appreciate the challenge. Fourth place: The cistern. Lara simply became ancient Mario. What else can I say about that?

Third place The Sanctuary of the Scion. I had a lot of fun climbing around these giant swings. The frightening underwater statues created a next level atmosphere. Place two seamless catacombs. I know many will not share my opinion. After all, Tomb Raider is supposed to be about ancient burial sites and not modern mines.

The varied level design paired with Lara’s hunt for her weapons and the minibuses make the level one of my top two, the lost valley. This level really captures the core essence of what makes a good Tun Trader level for me. First of all, tricky platforming in the valley, which is great.

Then a puzzle that you have to solve, which at the end takes you back to the beginning of the level and simply gently kills dinosaurs that were thought to have died. Rigg’s boss. In my opinion, it just doesn’t get much better than the Lost Valley. Here my ranking is complete again.

As I said, please put out your ranking again. There you have it. My dears, as promised a Tomb Raider video. If you liked the video, I would be very grateful for a like and subscription. You can also follow on Instagram or Twitch. As a channel member you can also support me financially.

You get cool badges, exclusive emojis and early access to my videos. I would especially like to thank the iPhones Kim and Heiko Drop Kick. By the way, thanks for recommending Tomb Raider. Thank you both Dio aka Julian and I am not aka Zonk. Thank you very much for your support.

The next video I can recommend to you is Solid or Silent Hill. Without it, Gon Gon Babaji is now watching.

      – Tomb Raider anstatt TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM Raider
