Glenan Wood is a native woodland that flanks the shores of Loch Fyne on the West side of Cowal. The walk itself was very atmospheric and takes you to the abandoned highland village of Glenan. The now ruinous village dates back to 1309 and was inhabited for 600yrs, surviving the highland and island clearances but was abandoned at the turn of the 20th century.
Local legend has it that the last resident was so heartbroken at having to leave, that he hanged himself in the woods.
