Yes you heard that correctly and it makes you wonder how would it have been built and what’s the history behind it well to find out we need to go back to you guessed it the ringways now as you probably know from the last episode there was supposed to be a Motorway from
Woodford to maplin Sand’s airport and that was supposed to be the M12 but did you know there was supposed to be another road from Black Wall to maplin Suns and was basically a southern version of the M12 this is the M13 let’s rewind and go back to just before the proposal was even conjured up to do this we need to go back to the 1920s when the a127 South End arterial Road had just been completed which provided a direct and faster route to the Sea and following this the Suburban
Sections of the a13 were bypassed and upgraded to a dual carriageway by the time the 60s came along and of course the ringways planners and Engineers were working on a plan to upgrade the a13 and several other roads in and around London in a report produced by the Ministry of
Transport by bringing most roads up to Urban Motorway standards because more roads less traffic am I right so in the ’70s when a new airport for London had been proposed a new road was under consideration and was labeled as the M13 this was because of the M12 proposal at
The same time it meant that the route it needed to go was south of South End how may you ask well put it in the sea of course so what happened to this then if you recall from the last episode you know that the airport was scrapped while
The M12 proposal was kept alive for quite a while after the demise of the airport plans the m113 wasn’t so lucky that’s why the A113 still is a problem to this day despite sections being bypassed widened and several Junction Improvement since thank you all for watching and don’t forget to subscribe
And like if you did and why not check out video of the M12 and until then tune in next time for another episode of unbuilt motorways
