5MV-JW – The Empire strikes back.
    ————————————

While out on a recent ride (https://www.strava.com/activities/10512868188), I experienced the problem with my rear gear changer. The bearing in the lower jockey sprocket had disintegrated causing it to seize up. The gear changer was a Sensah Empire carbon 11speed unit.

I had to affect a temporary repair in order to get home. I removed the bearing from the jockey sprocket, it was very loose but it worked as I managed to get home.
Once home I clean the gear changer, actually all of the bike, up. I used a replacement jockey sprocket that was in my spares bin to replace the broken jockey.
I had already ordered a set of replacement jockey sprockets from AliExpress, I’m just waiting for them to arrive before I can install them.

    About the 5MV channel
    ————————————–
My name is Terry and I love cycling. I have named my channel “Five Minute Velo” (5MV). I have called it 5MV because the videos I upload will (mostly) last no longer than five minutes. Each video will cover just one subject that is described in the title. Although the channel is mainly about cycling on the road, I will also cover some light (gravel) off road riding and cycle touring from time to time. No matter what, much of the advice will be pertinent to many branches of the sport/pastime.

I am new to posting videos on YouTube (May 2020) and I have much to learn, particularly in terms of presentation style and production quality. As such I welcome constructive comments that will help me improve the videos that I produce and upload.

There may be some dry humor in some of the videos, so dry it may not always be obvious :-).

    Terry

I just stopped because there was something wrong with my gears when I tried to pedal or pedal backwards the rear jockey on the lower part of the derer has become stuck so I’ve got to take it apart to see what’s causing it and it looks like the ball

Bearings in the lower jockey wheel have just completely disintegrated probably because they’ve dried out so I’ve never had a failure like that before what I’ve done is I’ve reassembled the jockey wheel but without the bearing in there so it’s very loose but it should at least get me

Home I made it the 25 km back home without further instant despite this jockey wheel being very loose because there’s no bearing in it now to be fair to sensor who make this group set and this gear changer this is the second winter that I’ve used it through and it’s covered about 8,000

Km so it’s had some fairly rough use as you saw I was also negligent in that that I let the lubricant within the bearing in here dry out and that didn’t help in terms of fa either so on the face of it I don’t think this jockey

Wheel is done too badly could have been better but could have been worse now also to be fair to myself about 3 or 4 days ago I did check these jockey wheels and although the bottom one felt a little bit loose it still spun fairly smoothly so it was not

In bad condition despite that I decided that it was probably about time to order a new set of jockey wheels just in case which I have done and I’m waiting for those to arrive in the post in the meantime I’ve got to find some way of repairing this while I’m waiting for

Those new jockey Wheels to arrive I’ve just removed the rear gear changer in a plate and jockey wheels and actually the bare ing in the upper jockey wheel still feels pretty good although as I showed earlier the bearing in the bottom jockey wheel has completely disintegrated now I do keep lots of

Stuff in my Spar box and as it would happen I have these jockey wheels that I purchased just some time ago just waiting to be used now this is a little bit smaller I believe this is 11 teeth as opposed to 13 teeth on this one however I can put

This in as a temporary measure while I’m waiting for the larger 13 to one to arrive from AliExpress okay I’ve now managed to affect a temporary repair first thing I did was clean up the gear changer in fact I clean the whole bike and the chain I’ve replaced this bottom jockey

Sprocket with the one that I showed you earlier and now it’s working at least temporarily until I get the replacement sprocket pretty well

    1. Happy new year, nice to see you uploading in 2024.
To be honest, I have never seen a jockey wheel fail like that. I am positively impressed that your ingenuity managed to get you back home – this gives me confidence for my own future rides.
