Do I really regret buying my 2024 Santa Cruz Heckler today’s video was supposed to be several videos and not just one video the separate videos I was going to make were the following first was a new bike Day video second was the first ride Impressions video the third was going to

Be a followup on the first uh impression video the fourth was going to be an upgrades video and the fifth was supposed to be a guide on how to pick the right ebike for you I’m ending it with just one video because of my whole experience with the purchase and the bad

Experience with the bike some of the bad experience was self-inflicted issues and the others were either Bike Shop related or Santa Cruz related now before I get into what some viewers might say as bashing the shop or the brand let me be clear right now the guys at the shop

Mike’s Bikes uh Mike’s Bikes and Santa Cruz and Shimano have been very helpful in resolving my issues and the issues like I mentioned earlier some were self-inflicted and others are real hey let’s start with new bike Day part of the video I have been meaning to buy an

Ebike ever since the designs started getting better originally I hated ebikes because of how they look take a look at these early Examples I never bought into the arguments of an ebike being a cheater bike or you don’t get a true workout or all those crappy comments other mountain bikers make about ebikes it’s a free country if you don’t like it don’t buy one to me it was really the looks and

The design that turned me off so why did I pick my 2024 Santa Cruz Heckler as I have mentioned first of all it’s the looks I mean look at the design coming from a 2021 Ibis ripmo V2 where the shape was where the shape of the frame

Was more curvy and flowy I like how angular and muscular looking the frame looks I love the Heckler for its sleek and modern design the clean lines and well-defined frame is visually appealing to me the attention to detail and high quality finishes the paint job graphics and overall finish looks attractive they

Also have various color option it comes in multiple uh levels as well and trims and gives you a variety of choices the frame geometry of the Heckler seems to be on par with what the current standards are I don’t really pay much attention to or too much attention to

This as long as I feel the ride is good for me then I’m fine wheel size was very important to me the fact that it comes with 29 in wheels and not only those Frankenstein mullet Wheels nowadays was a huge Factor component was somewhat of

A factor as you will see when we come to the upgrades portion of the video ultimately to me the visual appeal of the 2024 Santa Cruz Heckler and the overall aesthetic that Santa Cruz brings to its bikes is what I really like and one final note on why I picked Santa

Cruz was because it’s a local compy Company Santa Cruz is just an hour away from me and my thinking is more of I can go down there and pick it or complain if I had any issues or I needed to let me share with you what I bought and what I

Upgraded by the way these so-called upgrades that I did were mostly Parts taken off from my old ripo the goal of the update was purely aesthetic and has nothing to do with weight savings at all I went with the Heckler s29 originally I wanted to go with the r29 that was

$1,000 less however when I was looking at the components that came with the r it seemed that I would end up replacing or upgrading a lot more than the S the frame is the lower C frame compared to the CC it didn’t make Financial sense to

Go with the higher grade carbon and only be gaining very little in weight savings I actually get annoyed when bike companies do this two levels of or two types of carbon as opposed to just having one props to Ibis for just having one type okay guys this is my actual bike

That I want to share with you so the things that I have changed um like I said earlier the tropper and the wireless uh shifter I took that out of my uh my ripmo I added this Timber Bell I also took out my kedge Garmin Mount from wow

I think this was from four bikes ago but I always take this out and move it to my new bike my specialized s Works bottle cage this is the only one that I really come to love I’ve never lost a bottle with this unlike my previous uh my previous cages so it’s wireless

Shifter I’m going to be replacing this this is a fox 38 as you can see it doesn’t match the rock shocks rear shock so I’m going to be replacing this with um I’ve already ordered it uh Zeb ultimate and and I don’t know if I’ve already mentioned it the reason I’m

Getting the Z Ultimate is that they gave me a $600 gift card plus a 25% discount um to order that for All the Troubles that I’ve had with this bike and then I’ve also put in my my stamp 11 flat pedals I actually want to put

My my trail pedals that are um clipless pedals but they’re on my ripo but right now I guess I’m just going to stick with this for now just to see how everything is and how I like it and then the biggest the biggest update or upgrade is my my NV

M635 bird wheels these are really light I actually saved a pound and a half when I put these um these wheels on so it’s now a little bit under 50 lbs I can’t remember exactly I think it was 49 49.84 so that’s the bike oh so this is a

Physique with carbon rails I’ve had this again for three or four bikes now and I keep just moving it to my favorite bike and my Garmin still old I’m going to be replacing these with Trail one grips because I like the trail one grips um how how big they are

This one’s pretty it’s pretty it’s pretty small so I find myself like gripping so hard so what I’m going to do is I’m going to replace this with a with a trail one grips as well I kind of want to replace this with the spa 45 this is a birge stack 42 42

Mm I’m going to try the 45 um then let me see what else these brakes brakes are a little bit I’m still trying to get used to it um I don’t know if I’m going to upgrade this if I do upgrade it it’s most likely going to be

The mura m7s I like those um and from what I’ve read online they’re pretty good this bar I actually wanted to replace it with again with a trail one bar I really love the trail one stuff but the the thing is I like this because you can they internally route the wire

Of the Shimano shifter or not not shifter the the control panel um power button for the motor it’s um it’s stucked in here so there’s no wires coming out um here are the things that I hate like look at this Gap I mean that is freaking

Unsightly um I don’t know it just looks weird to me and then this if you notice I have my um my Race Face uh strap if I don’t have it let me take it off let’s check it out see this see see that Gap so so that’s the Gap but when

You press it it’s actually in it doesn’t move obviously if you have that so anyway I’m running as a guys on my old one double ass guys this one has the insert this one doesn’t have it can’t remember why it doesn’t have it I think

I just got lazy doing it so anyway that is my Santa Cruz 2024 Heckler used to be r29 but I think this is much better than the reserve axis that they have cost $7,000 now it’s probably 10 with those wheels and all the other stuff that I added

Oh here’s another thing that I forgot to show you one of my um one of the reasons why I I’m starting to hate this bike this things that happened to it I don’t know if you can see it here that chip take a look at that chip that happened at the bike shop

And then this other one I mean man and then this scratch it’s really freaking annoying you know I mean I know the bikes get scratches it’s different if I scratched it but look at this and it’s on the freaking top tube oh I hate the fact that I didn’t

Put any um um ride wrap around it but she jeez but it is a beauty so there you go for my first impressions as well as my regular Impressions about the bike and the issues with my bike hey guys so I just uh I just finished my uh first ride on my U

2024 Santa Cruz Heckler um I’m a little bit surprised first of all it’s amazing okay it’s a freaking ridiculous bike oh my god um the regular the regular route that I uh I take it’s I I just blew byy it and I’m not even breaking a sweat and

This is what I’ve been wanting you know um I’ve hold off on getting an ebike because this year 2023 uh we had a I had a big trip uh to Spain and I didn’t want to basically I didn’t want to ride an ebike and then realized that when I’m uh when I’m over

At uh over in Spain that I’m looking for my ebike so that’s why I I I I was holding off on buying an ebike anyways so I only had like less than 13 miles and 2600 ft I was on turbo all the time and about I’m about

175 completely uh um with with all the gears and I’m down to One battery level so that was that was quite a surprise and I took it to uh I took it back to the shop because the shop was just there um and they said what they told me is

Like hey uh maybe uh try recharging it and let’s see cycle cycling the thing um before um trying to see if there’s any issues but anyway that was my first ride it was amazing um you know I know it’s I can tell it’s a little bit uh heavier not a little bit

Heavier it’s much heavier than my bike it’s more than 20 lbs I very than my bike but I didn’t have any issue at all uh I think the only issue that I have or had was that the braking that’s the other thing the braking seems to have

For for a brand new bike it’s got code RS on certain descents that wen’t it’s not really that long the brakes were fading right away the the the rear brake I mean the front brake was a okay I mean as a matter of fact it it had a lot of

Bite but the the rear brake it was just a little bit uh a worrisome that something like that would fade right away and again um this is my first ebike so I don’t have any I don’t have any any to compare it to so I’m going to be having to ask

Around but anyway hope you enjoyed the video thanks a lot it’s more ebike all the time now woohoo yeah baby so that was my first impression of the B the bike overall it was good the thing that I really surprised me was the battery life

When you have it on Boost all the time it really drains it super fast I rode 1267 M and 2600 ft of climbing in 1 hour it seemed like I did not put any effort at all on all the climbs if I did this on my rip mode this would have been at

Least 2 hours and 15 minutes and I would have been dead tired afterwards because of this experience I questioned the battery life of my bike I thought that wasn’t normal they assured me that it is and then I started playing around with the app and now I’m on profile two which

Gives you more levels of power profile one only has uh eco Trail in boost profile two has seven levels I’m getting quite a lot more miles and ped of climbing but slower on the climbs and also I am tired or a little tired afterwards so this was this is my first

Issue or self-inflicted issue if you will most likely not a battery issue but more of expectation issue on my part and how I wanted to use the bike the next issue that I had which I still have is an error to 03 according to the app basically the error said stop using it

And return it ASAP to the shop I did that and guess what after they hooked it up to the computer they could not find that error the error is still in my app but it’s not showing up on this Shimano computer the Shop’s advice was to disregard it which I did originally but

When I contacted Shimano they told me no I need to return it to the shop and have a Shimano rep look into it as of this video I have not done so I’ll bring it back when they are ready to install my Zeb ultimate so that way I only make one

Trip my next issue that I encountered one day I Rod it trying to beat the rain well I actually got caught in the rain and the bike was so wet and muddy I go home turned the bike off and then I took a shower came back out and I wanted to

Clean the bike I tried turning it on it won’t turn on so I go back to the shop again they made me leave my bike and in the end could not determine why it would not turn back on now the good news is that after they took it apart and dried

The motor it turned back on again their guess is that moisture got into some place that it shouldn’t have now this is really concerning yes I got caught in a downpour but it wasn’t like I submerged the bike in water I mean it was just mud

And rain but like I said the good news is the bike is working properly with no issues I told the manager at the shop that I’m now scared of washing the bike if casual rain could cause a failure again another assurance that they gave me was that it shouldn’t happen just go

Ahead and wash it properly and nothing should happen to it and if something were to happen at least we have it already documented and maybe do a warranty replacement by the way two other issues I had with this bike before the power button issue not turning on

Were one the first one was my brakes were spongy turns out it wasn’t properly bled I was freaking going down the hill and I had no rear brakes luckily I had front brakes and I was able to slow down without any bad consequence happening the other issue was after it came back

From the shop when they fixed the power button I found two chips on the top tube and a scratch this really made my heart sink and really upset I mean all the trouble that I was having and then to see two chips in a scratch that I had

Nothing to do with to me was really disheartened I told them about it I told them that this was completely unacceptable their response to rectify it was to give me a choice of a helmet I told them I didn’t need a helmet but instead I could just get a discount on a

Zeb ultimate fork and they agreed and I’ll be honest with you it still didn’t sit right with me I mean all I can say is wow not one but two paint chips on the top tube and a scratch on the freaking brand new bike now also have an

Issue with the battery rattling and not being flushed to the bike I have to resort to putting a strap around it so that it it’s not loose and not rattling so now the question that needs to be answered what ebike should you buy will I buy this Heckler again let’s start

With what ebike you should buy first thing I have to tell you is don’t concern yourself with motor I have tried four Motors so far Shimano fua Bosch and Bros at the end of the day it doesn’t matter they will all perform and do the task it just comes down to your

Preference like for me I wanted the EP 801 because the previous model they said you will hear rattling noise when you are going down the mountain well with all the rattling going on with my bike I don’t think it matters the next question when choosing an ebike would be full

Power or SL if you ride by yourself most of the time and do not ride with friends that have full power ebikes I highly suggest to get a mid power one because the weight on the full powered ebike is really noticeable and really changes the way you ride your bike I actually think

I ride slower downhill now because I’m so worried about stopping a heavy bike the only thing with an SL you have to remember is that battery life the power is still noticeable and shouldn’t be an issue it’s the battery that would be an issue I think the workaround on this is

Buy a bike that you can swap the battery and have one or two extra batteries I don’t believe in Rage extender simply because the whole point of getting an SL is to get a lighter bike once you attach a range extender then that makes the bike heavier and make no mistake about

It it’s the battery that makes these bikes really heavy so unless they come up with new technology for battery we will continue to have heavy full power ebikes would I buy this bike again absolutely not with what I know and how I use my ebike and that is full Boost

All the time it’s not meeting my expectations now I want want to make a big distinction here I’m not saying that the bike is bad or it rides bad in fact I love the way it rides again it’s my expectations also these little issues that I had with the bike whether it was

The battery the brakes or other stuff even if those did not exist or did not happen I still think I would not buy this bike in fact if there was a bike that I now regretting not buying it’s the transition relay I think for what I want this would be the closest thing

That could meet my expectations however I just want to warn you I join a forum of eikers that have the fua motor installed on their bikes and boy oh boy the reliability of these motors doesn’t seem good I saw a lot of people complaining about replacing their Motors

Not once not twice but three times so that is it for now while I may not buy this bike again I will continue to ride it I just need to adjust my riding style and expectations hey thanks for watching
