April 23, 2022 – Chicago by Bike is on the road again, this time in Dublin, Ireland. This virtual tour captures a bike ride down the Grand Canal Cycle Way to the River Liffey on the east side of the city. The bike path runs along the Grand Canal and provides a comfortable space for transportation and recreation. I used dublinbikes, a public bike-share system, for the ride. The bike only cost €5 for a 3-day subscription that entitled me to unlimited 30-minute rides at no additional cost.

This bike path was the best cycling infrastructure I personally saw while in Dublin and I was pretty impressed by it. Having said that, the quality of the path was certainly the exception, not the norm. I think Dublin still has a lot of room for improvement as much of the bike infrastructure I saw was very narrow and uncomfortable. Still, compared to Chicago, I generally felt safe biking here and would love to come back and visit again soon.

  1. HA! They cycle on the wrong side of the bike path also (just kidding).

Just from watching, it appears the lack of automobile traffic and areas limited to bicycle and pedestrian traffic also would make it feel much safer. Here in New Orleans, while the French Quarter Festival is going on this weekend, the city is allowing traffic into most of the Quarter, leading to traffic jams and impatient drivers, making it difficult to get around and creating a dangerous environment for both pedestrians and bikers like myself. I'll be posting videos over the next couple of days of my experience biking around the fest where it's very evident what a bad idea it is to allow traffic into the French Quarter during such an event.
