I do A LOT of riding at night, so a good bike light is absolutely key. This one from AliExpress is easily the best light I’ve ever had!

With bike lights, it’s quite easy to find ones that are ridiculously bright, but to find one that is bright, great value, AND compact is much more difficult. After searching around AliExpress, I found this CBL 1600 from a company called Magicshine (although the same light can also be found under the name ‘EVO 1700’). It can output a whopping 1600 lumens, doesn’t require an external battery pack, and also comes with a wireless remote.

However the best feature is that using the remote, you can easily switch between high and low beams, just like a car headlight. 1600 lumens is more than enough to blind any oncoming traffic, so the ability to dip the beam wirelessly using the remote is a game changer.

I picked up my one from AliExpress for around £53 ($67), but they can also be found on Amazon, and some other retailers.

Also shoutout to @nattapongbike , who convinced me to check out this light!

So this bike light is small and compact literally turns night into day but it has another absolutely killer feature that sets it apart from anything else that I’ve tried I I love cool little gadgets like this and for the price I paid yeah and this thing is awesome my

Name as always is Luke and welcome back to trace Del now I’m not sure about you but I reckon I do about 30 maybe 40% of my rides this time of year in the dark after Sunset the days are just so short so having a decent Set of Lights has

Always been key for me so we are talking front lights today and I’ve covered a couple on the channel in the past and I’ll throw up some uh some video of those and they’ve been really really good but this one that I’m showing you

Now is just so cool and it’s yeah Like A Cut Above in in a lot of ways actually and it’s worth stating the company magic shine yeah magic shine they’ve not contacted me to do a sponsored video or or anything like that I found this on

AliExpress and yeah I bought it with my own cash so um yeah with that with that out of the way yeah let me show you this thing okay so first off this light is well it’s incredibly bright the maximum output is 1,600 lumens and I can definitely believe it it’s it’s

Difficult to show well on camera in the dark but when you have it on it’s like literal daylight streaming out the front of your bike and the sort of pattern of the beam is really good as well I I tried my best to record on the go here

But it’s been specifically designed to hang under the handlebars so means they’ve been able to shape the lens to put the sort of beam perfectly where you need it on the road so a hallogen bulb in a car headlight that’s 1,200 lumens there or thereabouts on high beams so

It’s at 1600 lumens this thing is well above that and that’s all well and good literally bright enough for any any scenario but it’s also going to be enough to Blind any oncoming traffic or any other cyclists on the other side of the road I mean I used to get flashed by

Cars coming the other way when I was running this light here and this thing tops out at 800 lumens so600 is frankly dangerous in some ways but that’s where the killer feature of this light comes in honestly that’s so cool so exactly the same as a set of car

Headlights it has a high and a low beam how how cool is that so it comes with a little remote that you can mount on the bars or next to your shifters or wherever so with the click of a button you can switch between high and low beam

So check this out here we’re on a low beam and then I’ll switch it up to high honestly it’s a bit of a game changer I mean I’ve never seen a bike light do this yeah I love it now the unit itself like I said it’s really small and

Compact for what it’s capable of so a regular bike light like this one weighs in at 116 G and this one 157 G so it’s not even that much bigger or heavier now it can only really be mounted underneath the bars with a GoPro fitting but it

Does come with a decent handlebar mount in the box that can fit a Garmin on the top as well now considering the size battery life is is decent a lot of these high-powered bike lights will require a bulky external battery pack but this one it’s all self-contained just a lot

Easier to manage it’s apparently 4,000 milliamp hours and here are the run time s for the different modes I will say 2 hours at the maximum brightness is pretty generous more like an hour and 20 I found but that has been at near freezing temperatures later on in the

Year when it warmed up the battery is probably going to last a little bit longer but to be frank the low beam at 800 lumens it’s all you really need and 3 hours for that runtime yeah that’s pretty accurate maybe closer to 2 and 1/ half hours but more than enough for some

Decent night rides and if you want to see why my frame is so reflective in in this clip yeah check out the video that I’ve linked in the top right that was a quite a cool project actually another cool thing so there’s a colored LED on the power button that shows the the

Remaining battery but it can be difficult to see this when you’re riding along but it also mirrors this color on the remote which yeah really useful so once it gets below about 20% battery it goes from Green on the remote which you can see here over to Red then it below

10% battery it flashes red twice when clicked and limits you to 200 lumens on the low beam now I tested it once you hit this it will last about another 1 and 1 half to 2 hours actually so a great little safety feature stops you burning through the battery and getting

Stranded in the dark now they’ve got an app that you can use to program the light with whatever modes you want so you can pick the brightness levels and set flashing modes or or whatever and then you can switch between these on the go with the remote too but if that’s too

Much faf you can also just use the button on the actual light to switch between the basic modes it’s it’s basically Wicked I’ve always wanted to have high and low beams on a bike light and the way it’s been integrated here with the remote and everything it’s it’s

Just fantastic now I got mine for 53 quid delivered to my house which I think is pretty reasonable actually considering the build quality of this thing like there’s a machined aluminium housing for the main body and stuff like that interestingly my one is labeled CBL 1600 but you can also find them branded

As Evo 1700 from doing a little bit of kind of digging around I think I found out that my one here it’s labeled differently because it’s specific to the Chinese market whether or not there’s a 100 Lumen difference in the maximum brightness between them I I don’t know

But I very much doubt it I suspect they’re exactly the same unit now you can also get them on Amazon for about 90 quid and I think I saw some YouTube reviews where they had a 15% discount code from the company so this video is

Going to take me like two days to edit together so while I’m doing that I’ll drop the company magic shine I’ll drop them a message and see if I can hook that up as well but to be honest if you can find a listing for it on AliExpress FBI open up because they’re

Not that common from from what I could see that’s probably going to be the cheapest place for you to get it from but obviously warranties and returns stuff like that it’s going to be a little bit more sort of problematic but click this video up here actually if you

Want to learn a bit more about that anyway this thing is great like I said rides in the dark they’re they’re a very common occurrence for me these days especially with a new a new three-month-old daughter carving out enough time during daylight hours on some days is a near impossible task so

When I find something like this that just makes riding at night a lot more enjoyable and quite fun as well to kind of fiddle around with then yeah I just I I had to uh had to show you it’s just it’s it’s a big part night riding is a

Big part part of of how I ride so this is yeah really really awesome honestly right anyway enough of that subscribe if you like this kind of thing hit the like button if you enjoyed this episode that I’ve produced for you and um yeah that’s it right see you next time see you

Later okay so I’ll pop this at the end but I did notice the reviews for this thing on Amazon weren’t they weren’t exactly glowing I think it had like 3.8 stars out of five so I did a bit of digging into those reviews and a lot of the criticisms revolved around the

Plastic GoPro mount on the top here I’ll include some pictures but some people seemingly had this part crack open or like explode apart and I can kind of see why so the plastic it does appear to be quite stiff and brittle so if you knocked it in the wrong way or dropped

It onto concrete or something I can see how this would just shatter so yeah like I I’ve had no issues with it I will say that when you press this button down on the front front this is meant to slide out but it does get stuck sometimes uh

Just because the the fit is quite tight in there so I can see if you force that maybe it would snap this off or snap these two pieces here so what I will say is that if you do get this just be careful with this mount on the top I’ve

Had no problems with it it’s been mounted on my bike and I ride over some some really shoddy roads around here so it’s bouncing all over the place and I’ve not had any issues with it over the last few months but yeah if you do get it just be cognizant that maybe this

Mount on the top isn’t the strongest part of the light um but yeah other than that I do really love this thing anyway that’s it see you next time ciao

    1. Looks like a bright light and great for off road use, but I strongly think riders on roads or shared paths (even just with other cyclists) should use lights designed not to blind or dazzle others. Lights compliant with the German StVZO standards are IMO an absolute must for considerate riders.

One thing I didn't understand from this video or their product pages is whether the light actually has proper high/low beam with two different emitters, or if it's just changing the brightness. Something like this with two emitters and optical paths (like a car headlight) would be really cool, and the projector design is already most of the way there and shouldn't be hard to extend.

    2. I have been using 2 Magicshine MJ-818 rear lights with external battery for about 10 years and they are the best rear lights I have ever used. Very bright even on a summers day. The modern Magicshine stuff is very innovative and thanks for showing that light, might get one.

    3. nice! how much does it weigh? 🥖💡
i need something like this for maybe an hour in the mornings just before sunrise where the hills have no streetlights.

    4. This looks like a nice product at a good price.

The high beam will be good for trail riding but a road or street rider shouldn't need it much, if at all.

When setting up a low beam, look at the beam pattern against a wall. Make sure it does not go above the mounting point. This is to ensure it doesn't shine in people's faces whether they are walking, cycling, or in a car.

    5. I recently got a Wukkor TS10 flash light as a bike light. It is about the size of a AA cell and runs on a 14500 li-ion battery. The best part is that it uses Anduril 2 UI, which has tons of customization and features. 2 of my favorite features are the bike blink mode (solid light + blinking) and gradual light intensity adjustment.

    6. Looks ugly in my opinion and the remote just more handlebar clutter. When lights are concerned, buy cheap buy twice. I've had lots of Banggood garbage over the years. Now I have Fenix BC26R with spare 21700 batteries and really neat under garmin computer clip (ALD-10). Looks awesome, virtually indestructible and 1600L way too powerful for the road so only use the 200L or 600L settings which means the battery lasts and lasts (I can carry a spare anyway just in case). No need for dipping the beam as I point it down anyway and I never use the full 1600L

    7. They need to start designing these with a dipped beam like car headlights. They need a cutoff point for the light otherwise it's blinding and dangerous.

    8. One if them crapped out on me. And the increase in angle for high beams is a bit mich but its hard to find decent high low beam light. So i got another one

    9. Got the same light and it has me going out even earlier because of how awesome the lighting is. Its so cool!
I really enjoy MagicShine. Ive got them across all my bikes.

    10. A lot of YouTubers shill for magic shine but in my experience the light failed after a few months and they provided no warranty and no support. It’s all well and good to review a brand new product but in my experience magic shine products do not last (I’ve purchased four lights from them).

    11. I cant get enough of my towild CL1200 it has the same ally body and remote with three light levels a button to flash your high beam and a button to make it flash in what ever brightness your on

    12. You are the man Luke ! lol I've been looking for this exact light for some time and was waiting for someone to post more info and there you are haha thanks! Magicshine is a well known brand in China as i know. btw im waiting your review update on Riro carbon crankset, im about to get mine very soon! The reason I got Riro cranks was your review of Racework N1 cranks which I did not like same as you pointed in your vid. 🙃

    13. the light connector will fail and break after continues bumping and shaking, and this isn't a German standrad approved light.
YOU SHOULD USE A PHONE LANYARD TO TIE THE LIGHT AND HANDLEBAR. that's for the safty.
On our local online flea market it's about 25 USD right now.

    14. That's fortuitious! I used to run the same Enfitninx light, and got honked at, or even yelled at quite a few times. Searched for years for a light which has a sharp upper cutoff, is powerful on the top end and does not require an external batter pack. This Magicshine is perfect.

    15. So this light is basically a copy of the Lupine SL AF (or the SL Nano?), which has been on the market for at least 5 years now. I wonder what took the Chinese so long to copy it, the copy of the Lupine Tesla (which gave birth to Magicshine itself, if anyone remembers, back in 2007-ish) was ready within a year. OK, that did not have this fancy double-lens setup… and I doubt that this light has StVZO approval, but of course, who cares about that outside Germany.

    16. It's important to find a light that's bright enough, has replaceable rechargeable batteries, does not blind drivers and other road users, and doesn't die in rain or at random.

The whole 'not randomly dying unexpectedly' part is a big one, and why people riding at night regularly in audaxes don't tend to use random cheap lights, at least without backups.

We badly need standards for bike headlights as they have in Germany, and a ban on random imports that might be too bright, or otherwise unsafe.

I await the multi year review on these.
