Ilie is a 28 years old young man who practices sport, particularly hand cycling. Also, he has a locomotor disability, but this doesn’t stop him from pursuing his goals in sport. He participates in local and international marathons with his hand bike. Since in Moldova there is no any other person with a hand bike, he is quite known, especially between bicyclists. Ilie has mixed feelings towards the problem of discrimination and the lack of infrastructure in Chisinau and although he enjoys representing his country, he doesn’t see a future for himself in Moldova and thinks about leaving the country.

In a way one could say that in our country discrimination does not exist But the only way I get noticed is by riding a recumbent bike. I received this medal at the Hamburg Marathon for the best result on a 21 km race It’s a first place medal

I have a lot of them, but this one’s worth the most, because with this one began my marathon adventure. There’s a lack of respect for cyclists. Once, a policeman warned me not to go on the track. I wanted to train on a bike path and choose my own speed and rhythm.

He said, “You’re not allowed to stay on the pavement.” I said, “Okay, where then?”, he told me to stay at home, on the balcony. It’s a handcycle with some history: it’s the champion of Russia and Europe. My main goal is difficult for me to achieve at the moment

It’s to win a medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games. I see my future away from this country. It’s likely I’m going leave.
