The TSSM system on the Harley-Davidson (Turn signal security module) can cause problems if you have a fault in one of the turn signal circuits. In this video I discuss a common problem with the Dyna fat Bob rear turn signals which is easy to fix, but which can give you a headache it you don’t know what has happened and your alarm keeps going off as a result.

Hello and thanks for joining me as you can see I’m in my workshop it’s quite cold I’ve got a br go just warming myself up and I’ve got my Harley-Davidson in bits at the moment and uh you can see I’m I’m sort of halfway through a job but as seems to

Happen quite frequently these days I start doing something and I Sly think do you know what this would make a good video so I go and grab my camera so so here we are and the reason I’m filming this is the issue that I’m about to show

You uh is quite a common one I’ve encountered it a couple of times before so if you own a Harley-Davidson Diner and in particular if you own The Fat Bob this this uh model then you may well come across it so the issue for me in this particular instance but this has

Happened to me before was the right hand uh rear indicator stopped working so I did the obvious thing you know checked the bulb but the bulb was is absolutely fine check the wiring um uh and that was okay and I thought I know what it’s

Going to be it’s going to be the circuit board so I’ve got the rear light off so here’s the rear light and but I’ve got an aftermarket LED light unit here but that that goes in here and I’ve got the number plate off as well so I just took

All of that off and I took it off to get to the Circuit Bool so just in here there is a a little circuit board goes in this I’ll hold it up so it goes goes in that plastic container this is the the circuit board here which then there

Is the cable that this this big cable here is the one that runs from the the loom and to that the two rear indicators and the rear light connects so it’s fairly straightforward however this is the the problem with it need to find my glasses hang on there they are so put my

Glasses on then I can see what I’m doing if I can see then you maybe will be able to see so what what we’ve got here is the um connectors hang on I I just grab something to to point with as well right so we got like these little

Spade connectors on here uh which connect but this one here on this end now let’s hold it around get an angle so you can see it that is supposed to have three SP connectors and you see the last one is missing it’s gone and the reason for that is corrosion

Because um particularly if you ride in the UK the salt water um comes under the mug guard if I just could focus back on here FS up under the mug guard and there is an access hole it’s not very big but it’s here there’s an access hole there

Where my finger is just wearing where the wiring comes through and inevitably some salt water in the winter gets through there now you can try your best to sort of bung that hole up with things silicon and stuff a lot of people put silicon in also you know it makes sense

When you put this on to to pack all of the spake connectors out with with silicon grease as well but this bike is 13 years old and it’s been ridden through no sorry it’s 14 years old now it’s been ridden through 14 Winters in the UK and it just takes its just takes

Its toll so I have bought a new one of these circuit connectors um and I’m I’m going to connect it up and hopefully that will fix the problem so the other way that I’ve seen this this manifest is because the uh if you have an alarm

System on your bike and most of these come with an alarm as standard the indicators are connected in with the alarm so if your alarm goes off you the motion sensor immobilizer goes off the indicators all flash which means that the indicators are linked in with the

Alarm system so if you get a fault like this on the uh indicator circuit it will register with the alarm so the way I’ve seen this come up before is switch the ignition on the alarm goes off for no apparent reason you know got the you’ve got the fob present everything the alarm

Goes off um and again it’s most likely to be this not very expensive to replace I had a a spare one here so uh I’m going to replace it make sure I put plenty of um silicon grease on it before I put it all back together the other thing I I’ll

Just mention whil I’ve got it in bits is the um yeah the number plate hanger this is all plastic this this unit here inside theit mago’s plastic but the the number plate hanger is metal um and uh this was really really badly rusted and corroded so I’ve treated with it with

Some Rust treatment and uh repainted it and uh maybe insert a little bit about that in now whilst I’ve um got the the rear light and the number plate off the Harley um this is the uh the number plate bracket and it was really badly cruded you know obviously it gets all of

The uh the salt and stuff thrown up from the road on it over winter so those are just a other two bits I’m doing at the same time so I’m treating them with this hydrate 80 uh built Hammer hydrate 80 I don’t know if you’ve you familiar that

We’ve ever used it so you know I’ve got a lot of different rust treatment um products I’ve tried but I’ve been using this recently because unlike most of the stuff that kind of gel that you put on and then you have to to wash off um this

Stuff dries on and leaves a lay so when it goes on there in the pot there you can see it’s a sort of light blue color and you brush it on and it reacts with the metal and this has been on about 10 minutes now and it goes dark goes black

And I put another light layer on uh after that and then you just leave it on and you you paint over it so I’ve I’ve been using it on a few things and so far so good but obviously have to see what it’s like uh longer

Term okay so yeah I’m hoping now with with with this hydrate 80 and and some uh new paint on it this is going to be last for a while but I had to cut all of the nuts and bolts off here um everything was just totally seal

So um yeah replace it with some some new stainless nuts and bolts when I put it back together okay this is the uh this is the new uh little circuit board in the little plastic holder had and it comes with a copious amount of silicon grease on all the terminals I don’t know

If you can just make that out in the light there comes with a copious amount of of Grease already on there silicon grease and may well add a little bit more uh but I think there’s enough on there you know in recognition that it does need protecting just this when when

    You put it together

    1. I had a similar type of thing on my softail custom. The starter relay was fitted in between the rear wheel and the oil tank. I had a recall, which said the relay had to be replace as the starter motor may engage in adverse weather. When I got the bike back the new one was fitted in exactly the same place.
So I bought an aftermarket relay and fitted it securely under the seat. Good job Proffessori. 👍
