    1. I'm sorry – what's dangerous in cycling with both of your kids on the bike? We all still do it all of the time! As for the rear girl's dress: her dad's bike is fitted with skirt guards/coat guards.

    2. "useless plastic hats" lol on the mtb my helmet saved my head many times after a fall, i'd hate to live there, too flat and boring for an mtb, at least here in Belgium it takes only an hour or so to reach more rugged terrain and find nice trails. I've seen many dutch ppl take the same trains and know they must have been on it a lot longer than me.

    3. I'm glad it works for you. But would you recommend it to children of say 10 years old, or seniors of 80+, as well? And what about mothers with children of 4 or 5 years old? Anyway, according to Pucher a lot can be improved: policy.rutgers.edu/faculty/pucher/irresistible.pdf. look at the graph on page 13 for USA and NL safety records.

    4. In Holland if you see someone wearing a helmet, they are probably German. Or american tourists. Dutch have a simple way to not get hurt riding without a helmet…Don't Fall Off!

    5. Then there were less cars, but the Netherlands is still the safest place to ride a bycicle. All thanks to good and safe infrastructure. we still don't wear helmets and take our kids on the back of the bike.

    6. Riding a bike here doesn't mean you're poor. Even our prime minister rides his bike to work. And when it rains, we just hold an umbrella while cycling.

    7. You're right. I'm more than £200 a month better off by not owning a car. We just spend it on more holidays! Our parents had no way of knowing what a mess they were getting into and I'm sure with hindsight they would have made different choices.

i wonder how many kids wer killed by cracking their skulls after falling off their parents bicycle durrin this time"      Much less then you might think. We hardly fall. Children are in special chairs like in a car nowadays, and the mothers/fathers instinct is to protect the child at all cost when at some strange event they do fall even if it means he or she does gets hurt.

    9. Today nostalgia too: in this homevid from 1992, Dutch kids between age 3 and 6 play with their bikes in their street like skilled artists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVBgdm0vcaY (skip the final 1.5 minutes, and notice the girl on her mom's bike).
Cycling is embedded in their life.
And… the male version of the remarkable and reliable Gazelle Tour Popular, the Rolls Royce in Bikeland, is after >-100 years also still in production:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMeZ_rqFozY

    10. How just so nostalgic, we loved the fifties being born near the end of the war. Myself and my wife have had bikes since we were about seven years old, and still love bikes. We have been through most styles of bikes from racing road bikes, mountain bikes and step thrus and all in between. We have recently bought two more bikes. They are Electra Townies with flat foot technology as we are in our seventies and need to put our feet firmly on the ground when we stop. We live very close to a cycle path on the Romney Marsh so we are lucky. Bikes as a kid meant freedom to us. We envy the Dutch for their (fought for) cycle paths, I think the UK is striving to put more cycle paths in at long last. Like Holland it is very flat where we live, again so lucky. Lovely video, thanks.

    11. I think a lot of these old bicycles are Gazelles. I just purchased a new Gazelle Tour Populair and it looks virtually identical to these old Dutch bikes. So cool!

    12. For all the nay-sayers whenever I've fallen over on a bike its always been on my shoulder or legs. I stopped wearing a helmet years ago. As soon as the soft spot on a child's head hardens up they're perfectly fine without a helmet. Only time when one is needed is if you're racing in case you faceplant at high speed

    13. There are more cars now but still people use bicycles especially in the cities. Remember the Netherlands was occupied by the Germans in WWII. The Netherlands is very prosperous now. I was there in 1956 and 1957. Lovely country and lovely people.
