It’s no secret that pro riders get special treatment when it comes to setting up their bikes. But how different are these race eMTBs from the production counterpart. Steve Jones is joined by Fabian Barel to talk about his racing machine the Canyon Spectral:ON.

Canyon launched the strive inur bike back in April this year uh it came with the CFR version and also the CFR limited Fabian barell limited edition color um the question is what is the actual difference between fabian’s race bike and the production version of this well thankfully we’re joined by um Andrea

Alonte alonte alonte alonte um and the crazy Frenchman Now if you want to talk Cutting Edge technology this is Boris yeah this is Boris now check out boris’s hair I think he’s taken some oh that’s night look at the sides can you can we show the camera on the sides here there you go what does

That say nice no have a nice day have a nice day have a nice day folks all the top video all the top photographs from World Cup events this is your man uh what’s it say there grownup couldn’t agree more you think of uh think of fa’s

Bike I say it’s full circle okay here we go no you know it’s very different to how ni would set his bike up o Nico Nico he he I can see faan twitching no no because Nico was all about making his ebike as light as possible to go fast

But Fabian he’s got proper tires full suspension he’s kept his heat shield on there’s like so it’s different approaches let’s start from the beginning then um now the production CFR comes the 170 mil Fork up front you’ve got 10 mil more you’ve also got I mean

Is that stock Ze so let’s talk about the travel and also the internals well mainly the internal is pretty stock like one thing that we really try to do with rock shock is to make sure that we appear properly distinction and the bushing to make sure that to to optimize

Really the friction of the suspension to be able to optimize the the grip as much as having a very high spring Force so the the bike the fork still holds up because one thing you don’t really want in Enduro is to play too much with a hydraulic that is creating harshness and

For sure it creates efficiency and grip but also fatigue on the long run it’s even more on ebikes so we have to find the right compromise in the tune and uh that’s pretty much what we’ve done on that fork okay so so let’s get something clear then there is actually some

Special treatment for Fabian brell when it comes to the fork so that is possibly number one and terms of changes right it’s not quite production for sure I mean as as pro athlete we have a treatment is different than stock product but is just basically the maintenance already of the suspension

The type of oil you put in there how many time you serve it is only those parts is actually making a better optimization mechanically of the suspension itself right let’s move on then now as you can see on the production CFR there’s quite a low bar

On fabian’s bike the G5 bar seems to be a bit of a higher rise right yeah you’re correct it’s a 40 mm be right on something yeah that’s actually you Tred to it’s on a 30 mil 30 mil rise bar that you will find stock where on on my bike

I ride a 40 milal uh I really try to have a very uh easy handling position to have optimized front load and also being able to ride still charging when the tracks are very very steep which is probably my down background that is requesting me this but he help me to

Have uh my center of gravity where it needs to be in in any situation flat and steep you’ve not got any mud guards on the bike why is that no I do actually I normally optimize this mud guard like on everyday notice that’s what I use the

Reason there is none right now on is because we used yesterday a full one that is actually doing the back and the front to be able to have no spread in the gole as you know in Enduro tear offs are not allowed and rolloff is not sorry

Te is not allowed no it’s not allowed like you don’t throw plastic in the nature that’s that’s something that is that that that is part of the of the rules and you need to make sure that you uh optimize your gole clearance obviously Bosch launched the CX race

Limited edition motor last year guys watch fabian’s expression here behind his glasses while I say this but this isn’t a stock CX race limited edition motor in his eyes no it is it is this motor is I see I see this motor is actually fully stock the only thing that

We have we can optimize the the software to have the proper adjustment and have the exact radius of the rear wheel which is measur Before the Race so Bas on the tire Dimension that you actually take you take the exact um uh perimeter of of the wheel so you really optimize that

You are exactly at 27 kilm per hour because you are allowed to have a 7% margin to be able to get the push so we optimize that on the motor but the actual power and battery is fully stock optimized by Bosch and the software itself is obviously pushed at Max which

Means that the reactivity on the pedal is quite uh is quite optimized the 2 m extra boost is optimized as well so we basically set up the motor within the rules at its maximum talked about the handlebar a minute ago Fab seat is actually pushed maximum forward actually

What size is this bike that’s that’s a medium bike because we made the the r in line with all our gravity gravity bikes so you got a 475 uh reach on the on the medium size which is perfect for me uh when it comes to uh to ur riding but we

Made the seat angle very steep but even I try to optimize really my front load when it’s time to go on climbing so I put the rails of my saddle maximum forward so I can really push on the nose and have a minimum push your butt on the

Nose as you said exactly that’s what we do and you I know that you enjoy that one and it really helps it really helps to keep the the front wheel Underground when you do steep technical stuff and also let’s be honest as a Downy Rider I

I don’t use the armst string so much under pilling I have a lot more power with my quad so I always been pedaling quite far forward to the BB Andre what’s the production shock on the Fabian bike this is different isn’t it yeah this is new Vivid and from the production is Super

Deluxe uh this is more for downhill I guess he goes fast downhill pretty quick right triy to Fabian one thing I’ve actually noticed um obviously there’s changing weather conditions out in chatel you seem to have gone for the downhill Tire over like you know paral do and we use them the Scorpion tires

Which are higher volume we’ve got 2.8 and 2.6s why’ you use these tires rather than the ebike specific tires well clearly the way we charge and The Way We Ride uh when it comes to um to Ural racing you want to have a very fast rolling but you also want to have very

Aggressive ages and you want to have obviously the most pure resist resistant casing so the downhill Tire when it comes to racing are the most relevant and it’s what we use 100% of the time in racing we never go to 26 or to 28 this is very good for recreational riding

Easy grip Etc and you go for the softest Rubber and downhill casing all the times when it’s time to race what WS are these tires so those ones are 2 five both are 2 five so you’re going to be around a 62 uh bid with 62 CM pressure tie pressure

Secret oh come on Andre the wrong guy no it’s a secret he’s not going to tell you he’s not going to tell you you you can you can bring him into a wood box and make a water drip on his head and he cannot see

It he won’t tell you is that what you do with Andrea and you spare time for sure every time every time he’s not ready to talk I train him and we watch out he’s a little warrior he can take you down as much as a Welsh rugby man you are he

Takes you down you know these guys Italian Kung Fu Champion is that correct two time two times two times well I guess this little guy can take you down bro well I guess I guess he’s a handyman to have on the team then right yeah for

Sure yeah for those uh those kns out in San Ray we know and we know night yeah we know about that as he told you about the nights and sanmo uh let’s not go there disc size looks like 220 front and rear right but tire tire pressure obviously

All based on your weight and if you’re riding a push bike on I guess quite quite a lot of pressure at the moment then you don’t you don’t you can you can play around with quite low quite low pressure all the way down to 21 up to up to 26 on the front

Based on your weight and on the rear you probably navigate around 24 up to 28 30 based on what you are and the type of Tire rolling but as you can see the tires are big one we’re using the mend on the front that is quite all round

Tires and work really well on roots and all type of condition with softer rubber when on the rear we have a lot of very steep sectors on that track and very lomy we use the T that is a lot more aggressive you can see we still have

Quite some rolling area in the center but with massive breaking GAE and lot of lateral so you can break on the side and this this obviously help and this tire is quite big and as I was saying you got a 32 mm in a width so it really stands

Out and you can low the pressure to have very good what’s the in a witth in the front wheel s right yeah so have you have you actually experimented a lot with rim width and and why have you arrived at that particular rim width well the thing is clear is that the rim

WID obviously affect the frontal and lateral rigidity but it also massively affect the way the side of your thread pattern is and you my highly advice to people is is to consider when you choose a tire uh based on the wheels you have because some of the tires when you go

Too big you have the laterals that are actually moving in so and you don’t have lateral grip so it can be an issue on the rear but it can be a massive issue on the front so you really have to pay attention and that’s why we PR we took

The standard that is 28 to 30 when it’s time to design so you can you can play around with all the new trend but if you take a p tire on a 25 mm in with those type of th Tire you’ll be having the laterals that are way too far I’m

Surprised you know Fabian that having ridden like 2.6 tires 2.8 tires I think I think the comfort that it gives you and also the grip especially when you’re in big routy conditions I’m surprised that Downhill Racing hasn’t gone for for bigger bigger tires which are light with

Good sidewalls what why do you think that is well the rolling rolling is the main the main issue is like obviously to a certain um amount of things you have the the the the rolling efficiency that is quite good with a big volume but as

You go and P that point right now you have too much dragging of the tie on the ground and at the end of the day you want breaking you want grip but you also want bike that accelerate and people and riders with the suspension the geometry

I would say at quite high level of grips and you demand to the tire to have grip but also very fast rolling it’s quite interesting because we started off this conversation saying No this is a production bike but even talking about tires and rim widths alone clearly uh

Tells you that this isn’t quite a production bike as if fa it’s it’s we’re talking fine details here which you know gets you to the top of the sport yeah and also I mean there is clearly you need to have an understanding and I highly advise to people if they have the

Chance to try different thing to do so uh we we we are in a beautiful Market where you have lot of diversity of mountain bike and Technologies and ebike right now is exploding and there is a lot from Motors to tires to chassis and I’m I’m honest with you we’ve been

Working a year and a half on this product and the combo we have here and I’m super happy and proud with what he done there is nothing that is um I would say exceptional compared to the competitor but it’s a good all round setup that really provide us what’s the

Best on the market today could you just comment on the uh on the paintwork on this bike here yeah the lightning bolts for you know electricity just going do you have lightning on your bike I do have this exact bike yeah yeah with the Fabian barell limited edition I do I have his

Bike but it’s mine what’s your thoughts on on Shimano being now a serious Contender on power stages yeah well you can see that when you have investment of the brand you can see a five or seven Japanese people that are on the side of the track since the

Beginning of the season and Shimano has put been putting the effort to try to become competitive and I think I think they are but I do know that today and that’s why we made that choice the the B product right now is is on the far far

On the front of the game and give the best performance as a stock product but maybe in the future we could see can Fabian on the canyon spectral on bike I don’t think it will be the case because right now the spectralon is is again a

Trail bike when right now our choice is to develop a real andural race bike with a trive on which which is what we have now but then again Bosch has been give us um real confidence to share the the development of that product right now

And we we stock to have made that choice K one final thing fa Andrea thanks so much for joining us and to give us an insight into into the fine detail I mean we could talk about other things such as the gearing the discs this be yeah well

You know we could we could go down another Rabbit Hole disc we we’re not going to do it going check our video which we did on discs uh Fabian one last thing what’s your inspiration of the colorway of your strive limited edition Indo race bike well this has been worked

To be honest with the designer of um with the designer of of Canyon I really wanted to have something like electric out of it to really show the intensity of the bike that’s one of the guideline and also the red you can see out there

Is part of my color and logo that you can see on the other side those are the fine detail that I wanted to have and they wanted to go wild in the color but I said please not we we want a race bike we want something that is pure and

That’s going to look super clean and I’m quite happy with the the combo they found Andrea any last words from you words of wisdom what’s it like to work with this man uh I like work on this bike and oh nice I like work and

Uh and I love work with f there we go

    1. As usual, I'm impressed by the attention to detail and the fact that Fabien can clearly explain why he makes each of these technical choices. I feel like I'm learning a whole lot from every interview I watch with him!

    2. Wonder if he has any special battery mounts as just about everyone on the Strive on forums is suffering from the battery latch issue where the battery is disconnecting, the design is extremely poor and the amount of people with the issue is insane. 9K bike and people are having to zip tie their batteries in !

    3. A bit silly to suggest 2.6 & 2.8” tyres for enduro racing, it doesn’t take a scientist to understand rolling resistance. Iam a bit baffled with Steve’s comment, normally the chat is extremely good.

But sooooo good to hear Fabian’s insight into the spec- I geek out over the wheel specs
