Here’s my review of the new Meta Quest 3 as a first-time Quest headset owner. After spending 100+ hours with it, I am completely surprised by it. Considering the fair price, this is probably the mixed-reality headset for the masses and is leaps beyond the Quest 2 IMO. Hope you enjoy the review!

Meta Quest 3 – 100 Hours Later: A Real Game Changer!

So, the other week I pre-ordered The Meta QuestΒ  3. It’s Meta’s latest mixed reality headset andΒ Β  I came in with little to no expectations becauseΒ  I’ve never owned a quest one or2 headset so whenΒ Β  it got delivered on launch day and I put itΒ  on for the first time I was pretty shocked.Β Β

Hey friends – Andrew here, hope you’re well! So inΒ  this video I’ll share my review on The Meta QuestΒ Β  3 from a perspective of someone who hasn’t ownedΒ  the previous Quest headsets but I’ve been usingΒ Β

The quest three every day since launch and thisΒ  thing is ridiculous so on launch day the quest 3Β Β  came in a box half the size of the Quest 2 whichΒ  is nice to see and unboxing these it’s clear whyΒ Β

The box is so much smaller the quest 3 controllersΒ  and headset are Slimmer and streamlined as youΒ Β  can see here and there’s now LCD displays thatΒ  support 120 htz with essentially 2K resolutionΒ Β  per eye and putting these on for the first timeΒ  to set them up I was really impressed with theΒ Β

Sharpness and the quality of the displays text isΒ  really sharp colors are great and I can’t see anyΒ Β  aliasing so the first thing I did was manuallyΒ  map out the studio space and set some boundariesΒ Β

Then I booted up the close encounters game to putΒ  mixed reality and the new cameras to test and it’sΒ Β  actually really good like there’s a moment whenΒ  the spaceship slammed from the roof right onto myΒ Β

Desk and I just had to take a moment to admireΒ  just how impressive it all is and then when IΒ Β  picked up the ray gun thing from the spaceship IΒ  immediately could tell that the new controllersΒ Β  are noticeably reactive and it tracks my handΒ  movements pretty well but yeah seriously thisΒ Β

Game was one of the coolest little demos StraightΒ  Out of the Box the fuzz balls were jumping aroundΒ Β  and also even hiding behind my furniture andΒ  taking a glimpse out into the space throughΒ Β  the Broken Walls was also really impressive theΒ  headset is also relatively comfortable to wearΒ Β

There was a session where I wore it for like 3Β  hours straight until the battery died and I foundΒ Β  it comfortable enough but I definitely neededΒ  to take a break from the headset afterwards soΒ Β  the biggest new draw card of the meta Quest 3 isΒ  the hugely improved pass through mode for thatΒ Β

Mixed reality experience tapping twice on theΒ  side of the headband switches the headset intoΒ Β  full color pass through mode where you can seeΒ  your surroundings through the camera and it’sΒ Β  overlay with virtual elements for my time usingΒ  it I think it’s done pretty well and things likeΒ Β

Web browsing using Instagram and even Xbox cloudΒ  gaming is so cool when the giant displays and theΒ Β  user interface is just levitating in your roomΒ  using my hands to pinch and interact with theΒ Β  UI feels awesome too going from my real hand inΒ  mixed reality to my virtual one in the meta worldΒ Β

Is just so trippy but also really satisfyingΒ  just don’t expect hand tracking to be nearly asΒ Β  responsive as the uh new touch plus controllersΒ  which I’ll cover in a sec unfortunately passΒ Β  through mode does have some serious flaws usingΒ  pass through mode in Darker rooms doesn’t workΒ Β

That well everything becomes super grainy andΒ  almost low res and even in well lit rooms theΒ Β  cameras and displays are good but not good enoughΒ  to have you question which reality you’re reallyΒ Β  in you’ll definitely know that you’re lookingΒ  through a display and it is called pass throughΒ Β

Mode after all like for example I can see myΒ  phone on the desk but you’re not going to beΒ Β  able to make out the notifications on that phoneΒ  and overall after using the mode for a week I haveΒ Β

To say it feels more like a like a tech demo ofΒ  things to come it’s great and I’m really enjoyingΒ Β  watching YouTube consuming content through passΒ  through mode but there’s just not much more to doΒ Β  in this mode which is disappointing since Quest 3Β  is marketed as a mixed reality headset on launchΒ Β

So I was expecting more but I am really excited toΒ  see what we’ll get in the future and one featureΒ Β  I am super excited for is augments these areΒ  spacially aware interactive objects that areΒ Β  always there when you boot the quest 3 on andΒ  off it’s sort of like permanent digital decorΒ Β

You can place around your room that do all sortsΒ  of crazy things like adding portals to your homeΒ Β  where this could be an entry point to a game orΒ  turn your entire ceiling to an outer space CosmosΒ Β

With this it’s incredible so I’ve been playingΒ  a lot of The Walking Dead Saints and SinnersΒ Β  and the undead World in this game was reallyΒ  convincing and Atmospheric with great textureΒ Β  Clarity field of view and the Fantastic lightingΒ  brings the world uh the undead world to life

Ironically it runs super well with the newΒ  Snapdragon xr2 chip and 8 gabt of ram givesΒ Β  it enough punch to run everything I’ve played atΒ  120 htz visually I think it’s almost on par withΒ Β  the psvr2 but let’s remember that the quest 3 isΒ  just a completely Standalone VR device it runsΒ Β

Everything by itself right here so it makes itΒ  that much more impressive but be warned VR motionΒ Β  sickness is real and with games that requireΒ  movement like The Walking Dead you need to easeΒ Β  your way into VR I got pretty dizzy uh the firstΒ  15 or 20 minutes playing The Walking Dead whichΒ Β

Really really holds back the entire experienceΒ  but hopefully that changes as I get used to itΒ Β  pre-launch there were Quest 2 emulation modesΒ  to mimic the difference between the older andΒ Β  newer headsets and you can see the significantΒ  difference in brightness contrast and sharpnessΒ Β

Meta claims a 25% improved Center sharpnessΒ  and 50% at the edges of images and honestlyΒ Β  it looks about right but of course the quest 3Β  is still not as impressive as other higher-endΒ Β  and more expensive uh VI headsets like theΒ  valve index or pmax 8kx movement trackingΒ Β

Feels pretty great in game too so the trackingΒ  cameras are now pointing diagonally downwardsΒ Β  to pick up movements from the Torso elbowsΒ  arms and wrists and basically this translatesΒ Β  to really realistic and natural feeling bodyΒ  tracking in VR like wrapping bandages in TheΒ Β

Walking Dead actually the quest 3 has the sameΒ  tracking volume as the Quest 2 but because theΒ Β  camera placement is in different areas theΒ  are of tracking has changed you can see fromΒ Β  this picture here that there’s more trackingΒ  coverage around the Torso and shoulders thanΒ Β

The head and this actually works quite wellΒ  because meta came to the conclusion that weΒ Β  don’t often hold our hands above our heads forΒ  long periods of time which was probably the rightΒ Β  call now the inbuilt speakers on the questΒ  3 also makes gaming that much more immersiveΒ Β

Because the audio is really immersive thanks toΒ  the updated spatial sound for brilliant 3D audio it uses Universal hrtf which is based on soundΒ  localization and frequency accuracy so basicallyΒ Β  it just Maps your ears in certain directionsΒ  and amplifies that sound towards your ears andΒ Β

Actually that’s something that’s also used byΒ  Apple in the upcoming Vision Pro but yeah theΒ Β  speakers are plenty good for all types of usesΒ  from movie watching to gaming so moving on toΒ Β  the touch plus controllers these are really reallyΒ  good and they need a shout out too they’re SleekΒ Β

Ergonomic and the chunky outer rings have beenΒ  removed in hand they feel really natural almostΒ Β  like an extension of your hand the hapticΒ  feedback has been upgraded as well and itΒ Β  produces this really Punchy vibration and feedbackΒ  thanks to vcm haptics it’s actually quite similarΒ Β

To the Dualshock 4 controller which also usesΒ  vcm there’s also now stage two triggers whichΒ Β  means you can pull it once for an action and thenΒ  pull it harder again for another action in someΒ Β  ways it’s sort of like Apple’s discontinued 3DΒ  touch unfortunately though uh they do use rightΒ Β

Here they do use right here doublea batteries thatΒ  don’t last very long so you should probably haveΒ Β  a stack of ablea batteries on hand if you’reΒ  planning to use the quest 3 regularly so $499Β Β  now gets you a completely redesigned headsetΒ  inside and out everything about the headsetΒ Β

Is Miles Beyond The Meta Quest 2 it’s a reallyΒ  really good headset that’s all functional in oneΒ Β  it’s also convinced me that mixed reality couldΒ  be a thing in the near future I can see a lotΒ Β  of people actually uh using augments placingΒ  them around the bedroom or playing the pianoΒ Β

In peace out in public but it’s still some waysΒ  off because the headset still needs to be lighterΒ Β  with longer battery life plus it needs to becomeΒ  more socially acceptable but for now the quest 3Β Β  is a really good VI headset for gaming for mostΒ  people especially when Apple’s upcoming VisionΒ Β

Pro headset is a whooping six to seven timesΒ  more expensive at $3,499 so only a small nicheΒ Β  of people will be able to purchase that headsetΒ  but this one though this one is for the massesΒ Β  it’s got its flaws for sure but it doesn’tΒ  take away from the incredible experience andΒ Β

Hats off honestly to meta this is an InnovativeΒ  product that’s pushing boundaries and it’s it’sΒ Β  exciting to see the AR and VR space continueΒ  to grow and if you made it to the end of thisΒ Β  video Drop the code word comment augments andΒ  I’ll give it a like for watching until the veryΒ Β

    1. One of the best things I've learned about virtual reality, you do not ever remember playing the game, but remember being there instead.

I am quite eager to see the results of this technology used playing Video games with the latest dynamic lighting. I am curious of the effects it will have on the human mind.

    2. And he said that this could be outdone by the Valve Index? Quest 3 beats the Index in almost every field, and it has Quest Link to play your favorite PCVR games.

    3. I just purchased my Quest 3. I was mostly attracted to the productivity potential, when buying. *I intend to apply this tech to interior design and 3D modeling jobs. Thanks for the smooth video, hits nice. Lol augments

    4. do you have a Valve Index in order to make that comparison about screen quality or "impressiveness "? I heard from a heavy VR user who owns the Index that Quest 3 is the better screen in his opinion. I am still on a Quest 2 looking for a reason to upgrade.
