Our bicycle tour had now taken us over the transfagarasan pass and into Transylvania. It’s a really great area to visit by bike, we had a great time exploring Rasnov and Brasov before heading back over the Carpathian mountains. The route we took goes through the Putna Vrancea national park, it’s really beautiful and the large wide roads with hardly any cars was a total dream to cycle. The route follows the Putna river and honestly it was some of the best cycling of the trip. Especially in a country that is full of mental drivers.
What is sad however is the state of the trash and rubbish scattered everywhere, being on a bike, you really just see how much of the countryside has been polluted with plastic bottles. It’s super sad to see. Even the national park was overflowing with rubbish.

We met up with another cyclist Didi who showed us around the gem of a city Braila. It’s an essential stop if you’re travelling in this area. Crossing the Danube felt kind of significant. We’d almost made it to the coast and this was roughly the furthest east we’d travel. On one of our last nights as we neared the coast, we stopped in Slava Rusa and ended up getting kicked out some Roman Ruins we’d tried to camp at (quite rightly) but what happened next gave us faith again in the kindness of strangers.
