First of all, welcome to all viewers! We have a special guest from the USA with me Martin Pauly – “Grüezi miteinand” Normally you fly Bonanza? – That’s right! And today you’ll fly Lightwing AC4 – For the first time, I’m excited! And for the first time in Switzerland? Correct! – Correct? Very good!
For everyone who don’t know Martin Pauly yet Martin is a passionate Bonanza pilot and flies his N70TB from Cedar Rapids across the United States. On his YouTube channel, he offers a wide range of flight, entertainment, and learning videos on the topic of general aviation.
A business trip for his employer, Collins Aerospace, which produces avionics for King Air up to the Airbus A380 brought Martin for a few days to Switzerland this year. We only roughly planned our flight route to the Bernese Oberland. According to the forecast and webcams, the weather seems sunny overthere
The area around Buochs and Lucerne has overcast, with a base at around 5.000 feet. The first thing to do here, is to safely cross the Brünig Pass in hazy conditions. Of course, always with a plan B in mind. Let’s taxi out of the area – Yes There is a gate there
I can see that there is a cheat sheet, Can you use it to open the gate? That’s right, we have a remote control for that. Overthere you see: “Three clicks on 121.705” “wait for green light” We need to activate that afterwards as soon as we have the taxi clearance from Tower
A Mirage is located right in that Hangar! And then you can just go there and take a look? – Normally not, but… now they probably have an open house or something. And now we are their stars, they are taking photos of us. – Yes, it’s our turn now, yes!
Then I’ll call the Tower – Yes Now we just do the three clicks on the special frequency, the Tower itself doesn’t do that. Now you will see that we get a green light over there. What do those numbers mean up there? These numbers are a shooting range.
They shoot here over the road, but the bullets are so high… Hopefully! Does it fit there? Clearance? Yes, that works. If I had had the camera… That’s crazy, you use the radio to turn on the traffic lights. Yes, and those barriers over there, also cross the runway. The Tower will close those.
Outside Tower operational hours, you need to close them by yourself using radio remote control Cars, pedestrians, and everybody can cross over there. I only knew one airport with a road crossing the runway, and that was in Gibraltar. Yes, indeed! Here is another barrier… …which is for a land and bicycle road
The tractor has locked itself up. Do you see? He cannot leave. There seem to be thermals there. – Yes Once we’re in the air, and you think the weather is not good enough for our plans… We cancel, of course! Always play it safe! – Definitely, definitely! Let’s walk through the engine data
Checklists have been fully checked! Video editing means lost of content! Here in the mountains, there isn’t that much space to build a long runway so you have to make compromises. – Definitely, yes! And the local communities are quite happy that the runway exists
Because there is now a lot of land and much nature so they can’t fill this space up with buildings or other stuff. And that’s channel 14. They are all pre-programmed? Yes, in this region, they’re all pre-programmed! – Yeah, good Insane! Is that a military base over there? – Yes, that’s Alpnach
And you’re in contact with them, or? Let’s reduce a bit And there is another airfield down here, that’s Kägiswil for the general aviation. There are plenty of airfields here, right? – Yes, absolutely! With these weather views you have to know the valley. Here is the Sarnersee
A little further up, you can see a lake in the distance, right? I can recognize it a tiny bit, yes. – That’s right, that’s the Lungerersee And behind that is the pass, where the weather should be better on the other side. If not, we will turn around. – Alright
I have to look, these are kilometers per hour, right? – Yes that’s km/h, indeed. Here you can also see that red is not over flyable. – Yeah Yellow means close to the ground. And down there you can see… …right there the pass. We have to get over there.
We are in principle high enough, but we’ll take a little safety altitude as soon as we can. But I can see good it good upfront, that’s the most important thing. Yes. It’s interesting, on one hand, how you have to talk to so many people in such a short distance
And on the other hand, how uncomplicated it is. – Yes, it works quite well in Switzerland. Absolutely. You can also see more blue (sky) now. – Yeah… Yes, you can see it quite well. So here is my decision: You can see that I’m turning a bit to 45 degrees.
I’m flying towards the other the valley side now and then I can, if it still doesn’t work, go back. – Yes, very good. Depening on how it looks over there. I’m flying towards that mountain. Now you can see, the other side of the pass is looking good. Even the sun is shining there.
You can already see a waterfall. Ah yes, how lovely! Everything looks good over here We even could, in case of engine failure, sail down to the military base. So I don”t have any worries now. But it’s always important to aknowledge that. You can already see the snow-covered mountains… – Look at that! Awesome!
Yes, there’s the “Föhn” (Föhn = downslope wind in the Alps) That happened exactly where I expected it to be. And soon we’re in the wind shadow. I think that was it. My God, the view is fantastic! Yes, absolutely. A dream, right? Yes, you’re having a beautiful area.
You are welcome to fly if you like. – Yes, please. On the right half of the lake, right? Yes, right side or north side. North is right across those mountains. And the other side is south. We’re still inside a CTR, class Delta. We’re flying great!
And you can see it here on the map… We are here in this valley, all good. How strong is the wind today at 10.000 or 15.000 ft? At 10,000 feet it’s already 30 to 35 or even 40 knots. And in the mountains, that’s no longer fun.
Yes, as I said, I haven’t yet learned how to fly in the mountains myself, but… …a rule of thumb in the mountains of Colorado, is when the wind at ridge height is more than… …let’s say 15 or even worst-case 20 knots, then you should keep your hands off it.
Or you have to know what you’re doing. – Indeed. My personal limit is 25 knots, but then it’s no longer fun anymore. Back in Iowa, we tend to have strong surface winds. Do you, yes? Yes, sometimes the surface wind is stronger than at 3.000 or 6.000 feet. Oh, alright!
Because the pressure systems at ground level and at mid-air level could be different. And this is… Our student pilots learn with wind, to take off and land in crosswinds. Otherwise… – Wait a minute. On the right, there’s a paraglider, or what is that? – Yes, we have to be careful here.
We have to stay clear of the old airfield, which is no longer active. Left. Is that the Interlaken airfield he just talked about? – Yes, indeed. There’s parachute jumping activity. We could fly through that valley for a bit, and then we just have to do a 180 turn.
Yes, whatever you think. The views are sick! This is unique! The air is so clear here and the colors are so rich! That looks wonderful! Ah Frans, I have expected beautiful looks, but I couldn’t have imagined that it would turn out so amazing! Very good! – Simply fantastic!
There’s also a ropeway. They built them new. Otherwise you can also take the train all the way up to the Jungfraujoch. Is that what you see below? Yes, that’s the ropeway, and the train you’ll see below in an avalanche protection tunnel
Yes – That’s where the train goes up to, until 3.500 meters high. Yes, if I wanted to go up there, I had to do that too. Without flying of course. Yes, indeed. – I’m quite afraid of heights… I love the view here and enjoy hiking, but I can’t hike in steep mountains.
That will become tremendous for me. Here we have the ropeway, we are clearly above it. I don’t know how much ropeways there are in the USA, but you need to take care of them here in Switzerland. This app shows all of that too, if we were too low for a ropeway.
Yes, I remember, a while ago, a US fighter jet cut the cables on a ropeway Ah yes, in Italy, right? – In Italy, yes! Ah, I’m enjoying this! Thanks alot! Let me put it this way, we are very privileged to have mountains on our doorstep.
But there are also days, when you wish to be in the flatlands, so it would be easier to fly. Starting from Biberach, I liked to fly to Kempten in the Allgäu (Region in Germany) There was a small airfield with a nice cafe, where you could drink a cup of coffee. Ah, great, yes!
And there you had also a beautiful view on the mountains, along the way. Not like here, but still for our conditions quite nice. Yeah, very good! It was that kind of a tour, if someone just wanted to fly along… …and you wanted to show them something nice, then I did that.
And starting from Iowa, you can fly down the Mississippi river valley. Well talking about valley, not a valley like this, but still slight differences in height. Great! – Or a bit further away to Chicago… …flying over Lake Michigan, and then flying along the city.
That’s what this flight comes closest to. There are skyscrapers that are higher than our altitude. If you like to fly again, please go ahead. – Yes, please! Would you like to further decent? – Yes, please To which altitude? – 4.500 ft, so we get below the clouds. Alright
That will be airspace Golf, so we have clear of clouds and earth surface view You can continue to fly, I’ll just use the radio button. – Understood Perhaps the radio gets blocked due those mountains. Let’s try again. You said flight information does not do flight following. But what do they do instead?
So they look on their radar… They provide traffic information, in case they see something on their radar They coordinate transits through Delta and Charlie, in case you want that. They open and close flight plans They can provide weather information, or if you need some kind of assistance
So they do have a radar, but are not authorized to give instructions. That means, if I asked them for a transit through airspace Charlie then they say: “Alright, stand-by, I coordinate” That’s why it’s called Information, because they are only allowed to forward informations. But are they generally for VFR flights?
Yes. But sometimes also a Ryanair plane contacts them, and then Ryanair says: “Request weather for bla bla bla” They do sometimes that. Yes. That looks good, I think we can remain this altitude. – Yeah If you feel a little uncomfortable, you can also turn left, so the mountains will get lower and lower.
Well, mountains… over here they are more hills, but… – Yes, its fine here. Let’s see if we get a little further. Otherwise, we can always escape to the left. We don’t have mountains there. The Cirrus I fly sometimes, has also a trim button like this.
However, a trim motor that is way too fast. You always have to look at the button in the wrong way, then it’s already over-trimmed. You’re constantly oversteering. How are the trim forces in the Bonanza? It’s hard to compare with the Bonanza, since you have the yoke. Yes, indeed.
In the Cirrus I would say there are less steering forces than here. I find the Cirrus easy to fly, but not necessarily comfortable to fly. Rudder coordination is ehh… A Cirrus is more of an airplane, where you turn on the autopilot shortly after takeoff… …and then sit back, and flying to somewhere.
More like flying an airliner? – Yeah We could go to that village, then it will be fine. That’s Entlebuch. Now it’s a quarter past five. 17:35 , that means the Tower of those military bases are not active anymore. And I think where we started, Buochs, will also not be active anymore.
Theoretically, we could check that too. We can quickly switch to the listening frequency. INFO is channel 11. Control zone Buochs is not active. Make blindcalls on 119.625. That sounds good. Should we continue to the right? Yes, indeed. On the right side. Perfect. We know that now.
12 liters per hour… I need that at least in gallons per hour, in the Bonanza. Yes, this one is very economical. It runs nice and quietly, I always see here 5.000 rpm. My engine would blow and fall apart at that speed. – Really?! How much RPM do you have?
About half when cruising. 2.500 RPM. Let’s directly switch to Buochs There you see, on that mountain, an elevator rises from the bottom to the top. I also see something at the hotel that looks very steep. Is that a rack railway? Yes, that’s right!
Or a funicular even, because I believe it gets pulled upwards by a rope. Ah, there you can see the beautiful pool! – Yes Alright, we’re now almost end of downwind. Now we can turn on the lights and bring down the barriers. Yes… – That works also with clicks. What, please wait?!
Indeed, the barriers are going down now. Only when it says “barriers are down” we are permitted to land. Alright. Because otherwise a car, tractor, or pedestrians could cross the runway. Everything possible. And when will the barrier open again? Is that timed? Yes, or when I press 6 clicks on the radio.
After 3 minutes or so, the message comes: “Barriers are opening in 30 seconds.” You can then confirm and extend it again. – Yes Or as soon as you’ve landed and left the runway, you can open the runway again with 6 clicks. We haven’t reached the barrier now? – No, not right now. Indeed.
Now you can film again, how we taxi across the road. Excellent! Ah, now we even need the remote control. In case you find it there. What do we have to press? The blue one? Press once… Yes, looks good. Yes, this is an airfield where you have to know a few local things.
Yes, that’s quite special – With the traffic lights, and the barrier, and the gate… …how to fly across the mountain, and then decide to go left or right. Before this episode ends, let’s take a quick look at what’s to come: Another flight to Europe’s highest airport, Samedan in the Engadine (Region)
This time in the middle of winter’s high season. Accompanied by pilot and aircraft mechanic Gilles, this promises to be a great tour! On the way back we land – along the Martinsloch – not less spectacular at the Mollis airfield in Glarnerland. We look forward to welcoming you virtually again in our cockpit.
Dear viewers, thank you for watching! Check out Martin Pauly too. He creates great videos in the USA with his Bonanza. In English, but awesome! And… thank you for flying along! – Oh, Frans, I have to thank you! That was a really great experience! I’m really happy that it worked out.
And… those were amazing views on the mountains! Yes, absolutely, we were lucky! When I fly back home next week, I’ll have cornfields again… Yeah, but… …the main thing is flying! – The main thing is flying, indeed! Great! Ciao! Bye!

Awesome video!
Vielen, vielen Dank!
What a great video! THanks for sharing your part of the world.
Even Ambri had the same device to prevent people crossing the runway with landing aircrafts.
Sensationell dieser Flug. 😊 Klasse Flugzeug die xxl C-42 und mega Kulisse. Hat Freude bereitet zu schauen. Mega! 😉
