Good afternoon hello my name is Daniel and today I’ve come down to we bu cycle in Derby because I’m thinking of swapping my bikes for something a little bit different I currently have a canyon andure race and a canyon Air Road both Rim break and they do different jobs I

Wonder if I can find one bike to do both jobs race on the one hand and train on the other hand I’ve picked out a few bikes within my 3 to four grand price range let’s have a look at them first up if you know me you know that this color

Is a bit of me The BMC team machine SLR R 01 it is even my size as well now I need a bike that climbs up hills gearing wise but also can race in Cris so a little bit of Arrow a little bit of climbing is it possible who knows let’s

Have a look at what I think about this bike so it has a brand new algra 8100 12-speed group set that takes a lot of boxes for me it’s got a 34k set on the back it is a compact crank I would probably change that to a mid compact or

Even a standard size crank set because the cassette range is so big but that’s not the end of the world I love the color the geometry isn’t that aggressive although it looks like an arrow racing frame you can tell here there’s quite a lot of Stack at the front of this bike

So I think I’ll be reasonably comfortable on this I haven’t done the you know the measurements but if you look at the Saddle to Bar drop it isn’t massive and that is roughly where I’d have my saddle as well I particularly like for usability the cockpit isn’t

Fully integrated so the stem is sort of arrow to the bars but it’s not one piece there is a normal shape bit of tubing close into the stem on the bars means I can attach lights and a normal Garin Mount or something but then slipping further outwards it is more of an arrow

Profile so you’ve got that bit of flat to be able to be on if you’re you know on the hoods and getting super arrow in a race it is disc brake it is a 160 mil rotor front and a 140 rotor rear so you’re saving a little bit on the rear

By having a smaller rotor but plenty of stopping power throughout and I think this is a very valid competitor it is just under £4,000 so towards the top of my budget but this could be in with a shout I particularly like that the down tube here is shaped to work better with

A bottle so if you’re having a bottle on the bike it’s not going to affect you negatively in a rat it is there to be Arrow as it is so midsection Carbon wheels these look pretty good to go and uh yeah so that’s the bmct machine let’s

Have a look at what else we’ve got in stock here oh you knew I wasn’t going to stray too far from a canyon didn’t you this is a 2023 Canyon Air Road CF SLX now this is the disc brake model so I have this bike just slightly older with

The rim breake so I already love it and I know how comfy it is for an arrow bike I’m trying not to be just too suede towards this immediately I’m not a massive fan of the red color if I’m honest but maybe it’s a grower the purple on top is definitely ticking the

Box for me now what’s different to The BMC that we just looked at well not a huge amount to be honest the cockpit is fully integrated so as I said earlier that’s cool for racing but that might be a problem for using on the road now Canyon do actually provide which I’ve

Got down here a factory built-in light set so you that goes under your computer mount on the front and then you’ve got a very nice Sleek rear light on the back so I can see how that is useful for training and you know what then maybe

That solves a problem of me not putting St on the bars but I do like to have Arrow clip on bars every now and again don’t hate me one big difference between this bike and the bike we’ve just looked at is the group set this is a Shram

Rival 2 by 12-speed group set now what the Shram 12sp speed does is I know it gets mixed reviews but it gives you a big range of Gears so if I’m trying to do lots of climbing on the one hand but also race at 30 mph in a crit on the

Other hand this group set does give you that range of course you don’t have that gradual steps in between gears as much as like the you know Shimano 11 speed or shim 12 speed but you do have that top end and bottom end which is more of a

Problem than the closeness in my opinion so it’s a 4837 chain set up front and I believe that’s a 1030 on the back and 4810 is bigger than 50 31 so you’ve got a faster Top Gear and that bottom gear is very low as well so it’s a good range

For the group set now I’m not completely sold on the flat top chains I have been using ybn chains instead of the SHRM ones but I don’t think it really makes a huge amount of difference for myself I know that these air roads did have a couple of problems with the seat post

Collar and there was something to do with the handlebars now this doesn’t have the adjustable handlebar so there’s no issue with that and the seat post color has had the modification done from Canyon that shouldn’t mean that there’s no slip and no problem with it so this

Could be a good shout for me or maybe not this specific bite but one like this because I know that the air Road rides really comfortable it’s really compliant it’s almost as compliant as my inur in fact so this is for me if I was going to change anything I’d probably put some

Narrower bars on cuz these do seem quite wide but again DT Swiss midsection Carbon wheels they’re going to do a good job all around they’re not too heavy they’re not too deep but they’re deep enough to be fast in a in a crit race so

There we go Canyon AO CF SLS 2023 on to the next one bike Choice number three Ribble endurance SL Pro this is shimono di2 Again full carbon now let me say from the outset that red is not my color I am a bigger fan of blue however the

Bike for what it is is like up my street Shimano 12-speed group set I’ve said this earlier but it’s a brand new group set and yeah it is a bit of me carbon frame again the down tube is shaped so that a bottle is more arrow in the frame

Than not in the frame hydraulic disc 140 mil row is front and back which is interesting but yeah I’m not too sure the the cockpit again has a little bit of roundedness towards the center of the stem maybe I could get some clip on bars on there maybe maybe I couldn’t if I’m

Honest the color’s put me off I’m more of a blue guy than I’m a red guy but this is slightly cheaper the bigger brands are perhaps more expensive this is just over just over £3,000 so could I save a few quid and go for a brand like

Ruble which is a bit perhaps less wellknown and more budget friendly I’m sure the bike will still do a great job big range on the back with the 34 cassette and um yeah definite definite maybe but just just not in this color for me okay the fourth and final option

For me then back to BMC The Time Machine road is the 01 model now I can immediately see how much more race focused this bike is than the road machine we looked at earlier the bottle cages are really sunk into the down tube there’s some bottom bracket storage

There and I know from seeing wind tunnel desk testing data that that is very AO filling in that bottom bracket area is you know does make bikes fast it looks slightly a more aggressive position you can see the forks are deeper and the down tubes deeper up to the cockpit the

Bars are fully like Arrow shaped in profile so there’s no way I’m getting any clip on bars or on there or anything the stem again it’s not fully integrated but it does you know connect in well with the bars you can tell that that is Arrow optimized that looks all well and

Good but I know if you if it didn’t fit you for any reason you had to change something it’s probably a bit of a faf to get a different stem or different bars and so on not the end of the world once you do it once it’s fitted but

Perhaps a little bit different the group set is slightly different as well so it does have a rotor chain set so 5236 up front which I do quite like running it gives me a good range for both the racing and for climbing and then it’s

Got 11 speed group set on the back I’d probably need to put a bigger cassette on there for me to get up the hills around here but this for me is probably a little bit too aerrow optimized I think I think I’d enjoy a bit more of a

Relaxed climbing Focus such as the air road which is like not quite a full-on race bike like this in my opinion but um yeah let me know down below what your thoughts are 160 more rot on the front and 140 on the back I don’t think that makes a massive difference in honesty

The 140s do stop really well as well but it’s just saving that weight on the back wheel where it’s not quite needed as much and yeah I’ve got some got some thinking to do if I’ve missed out any obvious choices please do let me know in the comment section down below I do

Quite fancy having to go on a canyon ultimate which I’ve never ridden as well as quite a few other bikes so I’ll see what we bicycle have coming in stock over the next few weeks and be sure to take one or two out for a ride when the

Weather is better but yeah that’s my current conundrum

    1. Some great choices
.. Did you tell Liz you got a few new bikes now

My gravel bike is also a commute bike too. So I told myself as I am still paying it off for another year

    2. That Time Machine Road is sexy, and it’s blue so yeah it’s fast😂. Honestly with the amount of use you do I really think you need a training bike, and a race bike. Perhaps Santa can hook you up with that ultimate race machine and you can keep the ultimate for the heavy lifting❤

    3. Hmmm. I think the most recent generation of bikes hits quite a sweet spot. Say the cannondale supersix, or the specialized sl8.
Personally I ride a cube litening which you can't really beat for value. It's light at 7,9incl pedals considering its a top aero bike (207w in tour test), and it only cost me 4800€.

    4. My vote would be the Teammachine. In my opinion it's an outstanding bike in all aspects. I was this close to getting one, but decided on a Factor Ostro VAM instead. I love my Factor, but I still think about that BMC.

Choose the bike that you will have peace with after the purchase. 🙂
