What does it mean to make 2024 the best cycling year of your life I think it’s about making progress towards your goals learning new skills and ensuring you find a good balance riding your bike and other life demands and activities and above all else guarantee you enjoy riding your bike because that’s
Ultimately is what it’s all about so in today’s video I want to share some things I’m personally going to implement to make sure I have a great year and also give you some ideas and tips and pointers for how you can also make sure 2024 is a great one let me know what
I’ve missed by leaving a comment down Below right let’s start with some goals and I like to Kickstart My year right now in January by setting some goals for the year ahead I’m usually really bad and not planning ahead and a downside to this approach is you often don’t have that drive that working towards a goal
Gives you and you goals can be anything from riding a new event setting a new distance record entering your first race getting better at climbing learning how to Bunny Hop or just trying to ride a bike more frequently it can be useful to reflect on what you achieved in the last
Year and years before as well and maybe time to raise a bar or try something new and I like to write the go down in some sort of order or preference and then I like to put them on a whiteboard in my office so every day it’s there as a
Reminder so no opportunity to forget what my goals are so an obvious goal is a bike event something I like to do as much as possible because they are really good targets they give me an added reason and incentive to ride my bike and that’s especially handy at this time of year
When the weather is rubbish and can easy question the wisdom of riding in the pouring rain or freezing temperatures so enter an event got a goal several weeks or months down the line and keep you riding even when you don’t really fancy it and that’s because entering an event
Holds you to account you have to get the Mars in to ensure you arrive at that event with enough Fitness to enjoy said event and entering an event in advance and let your family know and people around you know you’re doing an event May you can plan other life stuff around
It so it’s less likely to get bumped for something else so since I’m in a sharing mood today I’ve ENT the Fred witton challenge which I said I’d never do again after doing it a few years ago and the tracker in Jona a long distant
Gravel event and I have a few more plan so I got two events already in my mind in the calendar logged in I paid for those so I need to ride my bike as much as possible to make sure I get to the events as fit as I possibly can and I
Want to be fit to enjoy the events not necessarily getting around in a quick time but just make sure I don’t suffer too much much so let me know what events you have entered by leaving a comment down below events though aren’t for everybody they cost money and you have to travel
So something I also like to do is plan my own adventure either Solo or on my own or with some friends and over the last few years I’ve gone bike packing across amazing places like Scotland and Wales and on some crazy longdistance Road Adventures as well I even rode up a
Natural Mountain on a mountain bike last year which is not something that’s easy to do in my part of the world and my goals this year are to ride in countries I’ve never been to before got a few places in mind like Morocco and others and also discovering amazing New Roads
And trails and bikes which is something I’m really passionate about I love the way the bike takes you to incredible parts of the world that aren’t so accessible but have a means of transport and a bike just allows you to cover distance in a way that works really well
For discovering the countryside the culture and the people of that region and hopefully I document all those Adventures right here on the channel rather than on Instagram like I usually do if you’re new to cycling or even if you’ve been riding a long time like this
Old dog here if never too late to learn some new skills now bike maintenance is a big one and while working on a bike is pretty easy compared to a motor car say if you really want to learn how to do it properly then maybe signing up for a
Maintenance course with a skilled professional is a good idea learning how to properly look after your bike the tools and processes and steps is a really good way to make sure you look after your bike and given the cost of living these days and the cost of buying
New bike parts making a bike you have last longer through good proper maintenance is no bad thing at all there’s also r in skills as well how you handle a bike on a climb descend and so on now I’m not talking about descending like Tom pitock in the Tour of France
Though maybe that is a goal of yours let me know if it is if it is then maybe this is the year to do some skills course with a qualified coach to raise your bike handling skills to the next level I know confidence on the road can
Be a challenge for many cyclists so learn how to better handle a bike in those situations will not only improve your confidence but also your safety as well and if you are a road cyclist watching this then I can encourage you to try another discipline there’s cycl across there’s gravel and mountain
Biking and these off-road Pursuits are fantastic for really enhancing your bike handling skills when you’re riding a bike through mud and slippery conditions which translates really well to the road bike as mat vano is a good advocate for he is amazing at handling a bike in different situations whether cycling across or road
Racing now I’m not trying to sell you a new bike here but if you feel your cycling has been a bit stale in recent years then maybe 2024 is a year to try a new cycling discipline man Biking For example is rer fun a great way to get
Fit and fantastic for your bike handling skills and nothing like getting caked in mud it’s also good for your skin as well it’s a nice side bonus there’s also aax and touring you you like long distance cycling there’s Beach racing there’s tandem cycling cyc cross and Lads more so let
Me know what disciplines you want to try you haven’t tried yet but leave a comment down below so make 2024 a fantastic year by trying another cycling Discipline now this might sound crazy given a mostly review bikes and products here at just R bikes but perhaps don’t buy a new bike or product unless you absolutely need to instead spend money on a cycling holiday or a coach to take your Fitness to another level so don’t
Buy a bike unless you really need to really want to for better performance or another aspect of cycling and don’t buy new products and upgrade Parts until the stuff you got is worn out and also get better at looking after the gear you have so it lasts longer like waxing your
Chain for example it’s a good way make your chain last a lot Longer finally this goal setting is all well and good but definitely important to remember why you got into cycling in the first place I definitely feel like some people have forgotten why they got into bike riding I to get more seriously into the sport and I have been guilty of
That in the past when I lived in London I got heavily into road racing and for a while forgot the reason I got into cycling in the first Place cycling was and always will be about the journey adventure and Discovery and as I get older there something I’m Keen to remind
Myself on a regular basis so get faster get fitter get better on the bike but don’t forget why you started riding a bike in the first place unless your goal is to become a racing cyclist or something else then that’s fine but for most of us riding a bike is about so
Much more anyway let me know what your goals and targets are for year ride more go faster go further but leave a comment down below and if you want to see a video of the best bikes I’m excited for this year then watch your video right here and of course don’t forget to

Spend less time on social media and more on the bike 😊
Never buy new again is my goal.
Goals for the year are mountain bike focussed and big. I'm headed into a couple of mtb stage races and a 200km gravel event as well as some domestic xc races. Aiming to be fit enough to enjoy them and, when I'm racing in a pair, not be the slowest of the pair.
After basically having to switch to the bike completely in early April 23 (because my car broke down and it turned out we weren’t able to get it running again), my goal is to still frequently ride to work. Mid December my new car arrived, just in time for two weeks of catching a cold, so I fell some 85 km short of achieving 5.000 km. I’ll probably not get to this number again as I changed work in August, reducing the distance from 24 to 7 km. However, I want to have less mileage on the car by the end of the year than I have collected over the years (since 2020) on my bike (roughly 9.200 km so far)
I am aiming for an average of 7 to 8 hours a week 💪
I’ve got a place in Unbound Gravel XL and I am now dreading it!
N + 1 😉
buy less stuff -probably the hardest goal for me. But I'll take the challenge 😉
I’m riding my first sportive of the year in February which is the hell of the ashdown leading up to June when I’m doing coast to coast in a day 150 miles.
7:44 totally agree. Some people forget what is this sport all about! Just to have fun, JUST RIDE BIKES 😁
The Marmotte Gran Fondo is my main target for '24. Going to need big miles and plenty of elevation in the legs come June (and no Pidcock pedal slaps along the way hopefully).
I like how you said you were going to train so you don’t suffer as much. That is exactly why I do so many climbs on Zwift in the off season. Not to smash a KOM when I do get back on the road but just so that I concentrate more on the joy of the climb rather than my heart pounding out of my chest. Especially now that I’m in my 60’s. Happy New Year David!
Find new wife
Pmsl not really..
I want to add more structure to my riding, i.e more ftp more base. I also started a new goal in December ive gone back to weights and swimming as part of my training. I find when i stop weights i felt weakers, ive also started a none meat dairy diet..i.e vegan but will eat fish now then.. sorry bit of topic but im hoping this translates to better bike performance
Nice wrap up dave
1.25 “4. Don’t buy anymore bikes!” 😂😂😂
I’m doing the ‘Kentish Killer’ in March and the ‘Dragon Ride’ in June 😬
For me, performance is out the door – and enjoyment is going to be the main goal; so inspired by Lost Lanes, 'Slow cycling' and taking in the sights and sounds of the countryside.
👍🏻 Also signed up for Traka but I’ll probably bail and just ride the route another week when Girona’s less busy. TBC!
Loving the shift to gravel, just such a shame there isn’t more proper gravel locally, or southern U.K. generally. It all seems to be mud!
Goal #1 Ride through the winter. I never seem to make it all the way through. Got a good start this year and then got whacked with the flu. I'm impatiently waiting to get back out there!
I am 73 yrs old and my New year's resolution is to ride more, I have bad legs and half a lung.
I did 2600 miles in 2023 and I have set a goal for 2024 of 3300 miles+++
I’m an intermediate cyclist and would like to join a cycle club here in Calgary Canada but I’m just hesitant in case I’m not quick enough. 😕
