    LET’S GO!

The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen (Switzerland)
An interesting day trip from the Black Forest or Lake Constance takes you to nearby Switzerland: to the Rhine Falls and to the beautiful medieval towns of Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein.
The largest waterfall in Europe, the Rhine Falls, offers an impressive natural spectacle. At a width of 150 m, the Rhine (coming from Lake Constance) falls over the rocks from a height of 23 m.
The average flow rate is 750 cubic meters per second.

We recommend exploring from the high-altitude Laufen Castle. From the castle complex there is an impressive view of the Rhine Falls and the rock in the middle of the river. The path down to the Rhine leads over stairs and through a tunnel to various viewing platforms to the boat dock. The rock in the Rhine can be reached by boat and climbed. Or you can simply be taken to the other side of the Rhine to Wörth Castle, from where a beautiful tour takes you along the banks of the Rhine and over the railway bridge back to the starting point.

    Opening hours:
Visiting the Rhine Falls is always possible.
Viewing platform at Laufen Castle only during the castle’s opening hours (entrance fee)

How to get to the Rhine Falls:

    From the central Black Forest:
At Villingen-Schwenningen or Bad Dürrheim on the A81 Stuttgart-Singen motorway, from Singen to Schaffhausen (75 km)
    from Freiburg/Southern Black Forest:
B31 via Titisee-Neustadt to Hüfingen, then B27 via Blumberg to Schaffhausen (approx. 95 km)
from Lake Constance: Radolfzell – Schaffhausen (40 km) There are parking spaces on both sides of the waterfall, the best place to park is at Laufen Castle (south bank of the Rhine).

The border town of Schaffhausen is also worth a visit. The landmark of the city on the Upper Rhine is the circular Munot Fortress (built in 1564 based on a design by Dürer). The Minster of All Saints, the Museum of All Saints, medieval alleys and squares, town houses invite you to explore the city.

The town of Stein am Rhein is approx. 20 km from Schaffhausen. A stroll along the Rhine and through the medieval streets to the town hall square with its painted house facades is worth it. The St. Georgen Monastery Museum is also worth seeing. Above the town is Hohenklingen Castle (with a restaurant).
