Recumbent bikes are the fastest type of bicycle thanks to their aerodynamics and low position. But just how do they compare to a road bike? Manon took on James around Castle Combe race track to find out in a time trial challenge.

    1. Give me an electric velo mobile any day
I want a thousand Watts or at least 750 watts
I need a top speed of 45 mph
That way when I ride with the cars in the USA the motorists I can keep up with them on these 30 mph speed limit roads I don't necessarily have to do 45 it's just I like to have it just in case or if I'm in the middle of nowhere

    2. FYI, Velomobiles are not good at fast cornering, and the quattrovelo (4 wheeled) handles a lot better than 3 wheelers like the Milan here.

    3. I cant help but think that the shape of a recumbent bike can be easily adapted to accommodate a hammock frame add on which would allow people to sleep anywhere they feel like parking.

    4. I wish we could have seen this challenge with a velomobile rider whose muscles are actually accustomed to the specific work loads in a recumbent riding position. I have read of riders averaging ~55 kph on open roads in excess of 2hrs of riding time. As much as I enjoy my racing bike and dislike some of the klutzyness of handling velomobiles in general, I am convinced of it's superiority as a human powered vehicle, the Milan as pictured here in particular.

    5. The recumbent would be winning by a much larger time in a 2 or 3 hour ride. The initial launch on the bike makes a huge difference.

I'd love to see more evaluation of recumbents … especially with power assist for commuting etc.
