Hej Allihopa!
I was an exchange student in Sweden way back in 97/98 and I’m back to pedal the length of this beautiful country. I’m starting my adventure above the Arctic Circle in Kiruna, and I’ll make my way down to the bottom of Sweden where my host family lives. In this episode, I fly across the Atlantic, assemble my bike, and hit the road on the longest day of the year!

    1. Suveränt Ryan! Thanks for doing this…I myself just got back to Sweden after 28 years, had lived there for two playing hockey and going to school very much like you!!! Excellent memories you've brought back up 🙂

    2. You are such an inspiration!! Positive, happy, looking for bew adventures and embracing also the not-so-funny part of the joirney… ❤

    3. Man that's cool – and you're a brave man biking the E10 – I'd certainly never want to ride with that 100km/h speed limit.

The reason they leave some trees when they get timber is that the remaining trees bind the soil and prevent erosion, which is makes it somewhat less damaging to the environment and speeds up the regrowth.

    4. Sorry I was late to comment, too busy taking my daughter to get out there and ride her bike in her mountain biking club because some crazy Boulder guy inspired us.

    5. What do all those people escaping the city for the country do about the horrible mosquitoes? How can a nice summer home be a relaxing getaway if their life is a constant torture of mosquitoes? When the mosquitoes come out… they go in… and don’t come out? And what happened to the netting for your head, did it not work to keep the mosquitoes out of your face? And holy cow, no shoulders at all. There ought to be a law, there and here in the US, that all roads have a bicycle width shoulder or better ($$$).

    6. Loved the video, Ryan. Those trees left behind are for "biodiversity" or "habitat", for whatever critters are left after a clearfell. They are not for seeding. The clearfell will be replanted by people, not trees, unfortunately.

    7. Maybe someone's mentioned this already, so sorry for the repeat. The trees are left as seed trees. It's a common silvicultural practice in many places; the trees left are supposed to help reseed the area that has been deforested. Ideally, they're supposed to leave straight healthy trees so the offspring will also be straight and healthy.

They call this type of harvesting (in Canada) a (open) shelterwood cut. In reality, it is a close to a clearcut with 20-30 trees left per hectare for white pine, and about 15 trees per hectare for maple and birches. A strong windstorm will take out many of the trees left over because these trees have been sheltered from wind all their lives and haven't developed a root system that can withstand these winds. We visited one site where there was only a single tree left after several large windstorms blew through the region over the summer. The site didn't look any different from a pure clearcut.

Looking forward to seeing more videos. Skitters seem awful up there, even worse than northern Ontario. Blackflies are worse in our backwoods and will leave you looking like raw hamburger if you're not protected (Google The Blackfly Song by Wade Hemsworth and decades later made into a humorous National Film Board cartoon–it's on youtube and it is close to 100% accurate 🙂

edit: the cartoon talks about the dam building on the Little Abitibi River in the 1940s, and I finally got to work in the area two years ago. We all had to stop to take a picture of the dam as we all knew the Blackfly song.

    8. So excitied about the collab between you and Bike Touring Mike. I have been watching you and him for YEARS!. Cant wait to see those episodes. Great stuff Ryan…….keep going.

    9. Great video, Ryan. I could not deal with those mozzies. I would have to wear that head net all the time. What does the divide demarcate? Cant wait for the next vid.

    10. Hey Duzer, super excited for the Sweden 🇸🇪 series and excuse me if you’ve already discussed this but will you be reviewing the new PRIORITY 600HXT it seems very inspired by your 600?
