Cycling underpass in Amersfoort (Vathorst), The Netherlands
[Ep. 947] A short video about an underpass for walking and cycling in Amersfoort, Vathorst (The Netherlands) under a roundabout. (Rotonde 2/Calveenseweg), built in 2020/2021 and opened 19 April 2021. This video is not connected to a blog post.
This may surprise people, but part of the reason to build this underpass was because cars would get stuck in traffic! They had to yield to the cyclists on the roundabout and were stationary for too long. Now everyone can continue their journey uninterrupted.
This was a normal roundabout where te bikers must go around it. In rush hour there where many bikers and many cars. So it wasn’t that safe and the traffic flow was under pressure. That’s why the tunnel was build. I think they did a good job because it is a tight space to squeeze it all in.
Nice. I ride there daily. Apparently it was necessary because the large volume of cyclists on the roundabout was causing car traffic jams on the ring road. It took a very long time to build though, like a year or so, during which time you couldn't cycle there at all.
Tbh I find the tunnel a bit 'claustro' tight with the conctrete wall next to the path , when you go down in the underpass. It could use some 2ft or a meter extra side space. Or a more reclining wall …
You're doing it all wrong. Have the Swedish trafikverket come and show you how to make it better! You've got the bike path a bit too wide and since it is straight cyclists will be going dangerously fast. Best put in 90° turns at both ends of the tunnel, preferably with the pedestrians crossing the bike path right around the blind corner. This way everyone will slow down and it will become safer!
Next time just continue with route. The route is carefully build in the neighborhood with nice trees and corners to enter the shopping area. All people take the bikes, not cars for there daily shopping
The other nice route recently build is from this neighborhood to City center with fast route next to train track. Super easy, 7 km but no traffic lights and 15-20 min. The car takes more time than cycling due to the fact you need to go around the city to enter it. All direct routes are not build or closed
Marc, i sincerely hope you offered support to that mentally disturbed person in the end? Did you notify the appropriate authorities? Called child protectie services? Than again, it could have been a tunnel goblin who had it coming, or one of those dangerous poisonous praying dandelions. One can never be too sure. I think we owe this Young Warrior a debt that cannot be repaid. 😁 Kleine mensjes zijn de liefste mensjes🐞
Hello! May I ask what kind of camera you use for the filming when riding? I am also thinking about recording bike tours to introduce my city Venlo to friends. I tried to use phone recording on the phone holder but it was not of enough quality and shake d a lot😂.Btw thanks for sharing the riding route in the Netherlands, it is really helpful and nice to watch for bike enthusiast! I went on a trip in the 20km fast bike road between Eindhoven and Den Bosch after seeing your video and it's such a comfortable experience! I didn't even need a GPS guide because I had already gone through the route with your video haha:)
If we want to change for better, for a better environment, better health (mental and physical) this is the answer. We are fooling ourselves thinking that just changing from combustion cars to electric cars (not that I'm against that) we will have a "clean air" and better environment.
I think the child at the end is expressing the frustration of taking this beautiful piece of infrastructure and still ending up in Amersfoort Vathorst…

Nice bit of verbena bonariensis in the planting around the roundabout.

Love it 😀
Love the netherlands my 2019 holiday was best cycling holiday ever.
This video should be called murderer in the making. 🤣🤣
Great video as usual.
After carefully measuring the underpass it turned out it was still one cm too high still so they immediately sent someone to fix the problem at 1:23
American looking on in disbelief! Not only is it functional, it's also beautiful. Wow 😲
Amersfoort? Say hi to Robin from Ambuchannel 112 and Robin Restorations from me if you meet him!
Hey i live a few hundred meters next to it!
Un cálido saludo desde Perú. Bendiciones
I'll be the roundabout
The words will make you out 'n' out
I spend the day your way
Call it morning driving thru the sound and in and out the valley

Very nice underpass and as everyone can see at the end, our kids are the happiest kids ww ;p

👍👍👍
In 10 or 20 years time the kid at the end will see this video and think "What was I doing?"
Here is the Netherlands for 5 weeks riding out bikes!

Happiest children in the world according to UNESCO. Some exceptions though 🤣🤣🤣 Spoiled little brat trying to take down the underpass at 1:25 😱
0:21 is that a secret road?

Obviously millennials watching this video don't have kids themselves…

What was that kid doing at the end? Smashing bugs?
Wonderful country I want to go there.
Oh, I've been living round there for a year now. Never knew that was there.
Looks good. No graffiti yet, thanks for all your great videos.
Adult: See how the cycling underpass makes us all civilized and calm.
Kid: I must kill it! I must kill it dead! I must kill it now! Die! Die! Die!
I should go there. Only 20 minutes away
Looks so much like the ones in Lelystad. But then again, Lelystads bike infrastructure is literally next level, and the best I will ever know.
Of course you want to see more of that crazed child at the end. As someone might have once said: "leave 'em wanting more"!
Now let's request an underground pass for Amersfoort Centraal 🙂

Nice Google Earth-fu, Mark.
Is it just me or does it seem a bit narrow?
Hey. You can bike with me in Iran and Isfahan! Have fun😉 : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQeJsLbXUPu7wXMEJQ4W2pg
They learned from the roundabout at eemplein, for me the most difficult to navigate roundabout with a car prioritised underpass…
It's like Magic
The kid at the end is taking me out 💀
Ah, so these are the famously happy Dutch kids you hear so much about…
I think the child at the end is expressing the frustration of taking this beautiful piece of infrastructure and still ending up in Amersfoort Vathorst…
Very nice.
