Floods in Germany will continue in 2024, the threat of dam failure

The German weather service warned of continued rain in parts of Germany on Tuesday evening, which is expected to continue until Thursday evening. Floods in northern and eastern Germany have led to severe weakening of German dams.
At the beginning of the year, the Technical Assistance Agency employed approximately 1,000 volunteers throughout the country, especially in Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and North Rhine-Westphalia.
Volunteers are also active in Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. To reduce the load on the Kelbra dam in Saxony-Anhalt and create storage space for forecast rainfall, more water will be released into the Helme River, the responsible district office said. This is about another five cubic meters of water per second. This is why there are considerations about deepening the dam breach in the Thuringian town of Mönchpfiefel-Nikolausriet, whose width has been increased to 45 meters for the second time in the past few days.
