The Premier League Simon has reinforced its position as the richest domestic league in the world at least until the end of the decade after announcing a new domestic TV deal package with Sky Sports with TNT Sports and the BBC worth 6.7 billion pounds over four years from

2529 you look at it now change days since you were at the top of the house at Palace isn’t it has has the Premier League TV money now finally maxed out is there much more room now for any further group growth domestically I mean let’s hope the Saudis don’t buy Sky although

Otherwise they will have control of English football um domestically yes of course and it has been for some time I mean there’s only so many they can you know this is a great model that’s built Sky’s business ruper Murdoch 30 years ago 25 years ago bet the house on sky

And so it’s played out for him and the sports media rights have been the big thing that have driven this TR distraction the fact he’s gone to a four-year deal the fact that they’re doing it effectively locking up the distributions for the next six years you

Know you wonder if that’s a play to make sure that the negate some of the concerns independent regulator might come along and have their two pen him because it’s locked up for the next six years and the ballast deals are done um as far as domestic rights are concerned

That that that landscape has has has has been well- mined it’s not the domestic rights where the growth is it’s the overseas rights and that’s why it was scandalous that sco all when his his passing little gift left a little hand grenade in the mix which was basically a

Distribution of the overseas rights in favor of the big six clubs with a different mechanism with a different coefficient but of course I I find it difficult to understand how the Premier League is spinning this as a 4% growth on domestic rights it can’t be a 4%

Growth if you’ve got 5.1 billion as your current deal through which is 1.7 billion per year you then extrapolate that up to a four-year deal you should be talking about 7.1 billion to be a 4% increase you don’t you have a 6.7 you actually have a decrease in the domestic

Rights if you do it on a prala basis so there a bubble deflating domestically well yeah well again I say the point they’ve Tapped Out on domestic we’re a country of 50 million people people there’s a there’s continents around the world that are buying our product that have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds

Of millions so the deal now is is 1.7 billion per season um from the um from the from the domestic deals yeah and circle 1.7 billion from the overseas deals the next Frontier is they’re going to try and get two and three billion a season from overseas because why

Shouldn’t they they’ve got australasia they’ve got North America they’ve got all the continents you can think of that are available to them the Far East the Middle East all of these deal are being done left right and Center so the domestic rights are not are not that

That’s low hanging fruit that’s a gimme the overseas rights are where they will take it up to the next level of 11 12 billion every three or four year Cycles you’ve regularly spoken about the Netflix of football yeah so is it a surprise the top flight has shunned streaming Giants for traditionalism if

You like theone Amazon have not secured any broadcasting rights from 20125 but I don’t think that’s I look I think that the Amazon of the world have proven that they like sports and they’ve done they’ve hung their hat on on certain sports in America like Monday like Thursday night football and things of

That nature that have been very successful them because the former creative director of Amazon is a very good friend of mine so they talk about these things it’s disappointing it will not be a good thing for the tech Giants as we described them to have no input

Into sports because you give yourself no opportunities to leverage disguise of the world or to create a landscape where you’ve got competitive Jeet Jeopardy clearly they don’t like the price points clearly the fact that they came in last time look at the last time that they came in they bought the domestic rights

At the last knockings nobody won the the boxing day packages in the fact that all the games were being broadcast on one day Amazon came along and nicked it so this time around they possibly couldn’t so it wasn’t offered to them the sky bus I mean the biggest beneficiaries of this deal are

Undoubtedly the broadcasters undoubtedly Sky have gone up to 215 games now and so for that they’ve paid less money per game as already been described by others on other shows so from their point of view the economic return against their advertising Revenue against their subscription model is going to play out

Very nicely for them they’ve got like a 25% reduction 30% reduction in their cost per game right how much longer can the Saturday 3:00 in the afternoon blackout survive why should it why does it need to the only demand for the 3:00 blackout was but it was put on years and

Years ago because it protected lesser clubs from the the impact of attendances diminishing as a result of the fre black off black what it’s going to survive for the next foreseeable future with this new deal but why should it I don’t think it needs to I mean the argument is that

Women’s football needs to have slot well women’s football needs to earn its place to have a slot when it’s got the domestic broadcast deals that are worthy of having those slots then they’ll get it um the lower league clubs they can make an argument about the attendances

Well with with great respect that’s not bearing out as we see at this moment in time I know that they’ll say if you take away the 3:00 um um window that you create there’s no such thing as better than live why do you think all the rock

Bands are going out on concert tours of course because the digital rights now compromised their cells but primarily live is live and sports is Alive and Kicking from an attendance point of view it’s becoming Recession Proof it’s becoming we live in a country where all

We listen to is cost a living crisis but we don’t seem to find that manifesting itself in football stadiums do we uh if if if we’ve now hit the ceiling Simon in terms of U of um this particular deal what is a TV deal after this one look

Like the domestic deal there two deals there’s domestic deals and there’s overseas deal deals the domestic deal is now at its level it’s been up 5 billion for the last two cycles this is the third cycle it’s been at 5 billion so now you’re saying to yourself that’s the

Ceiling I mean the sky aren’t lacking profitability by the way but that’s the ceiling the next deal the next set of deals to supplement what’s going on and to underpin the finances of football are the overseas deals yeah that’s where the gold is you see well that’s where it’s

Been for some time but what will they want in return they want more in return W they well if you look at them you know that’s the argument this is the terrible conundrum that British football fans have to watch which is that they will pay £70 a month to watch on Sky whereas

An Australian viewer because of the broadcast packages that they buy can watch the same Premier League games for a tenor a month because the cost implications of what they’re buying but if you look at the amount of territories that they’re selling into the North Americans the austral Asians the Middle

Eastern the Far Eastern and every continent you can think of has a has a as a commercial deal and those deals are going to be ratcheted because the engagement level and the interest so what I expect to see yeah is the overseas deals for the first time eclipse the domestic deals what you’ve

Had over the years is is the domestic deals and all of a sudden overseas deals would have run to the litter and it began to tilt and tilt and tilt and then then scoore leaves and talks about the dynamic of leaving um uh more Revenue in it because the big six were always

Suggesting the only reason we um uh the Premier League gets the money that it gets is because of us yeah and so we want more of it so scoore gives a little bit more of the overseas deals which will come back and have a sting in its tail I expect the overseas deals

To be 6 billion so that the overall package goes to 11 and 12 billion every 3 years that’s where the real money is that’s where the gold is that’s why Presa theow you might change your opinion in that there will sooner or later be a Premier League game overseas

I don’t think I don’t think there’s a necessity for that but that’s where the money is that’s where the big door is but but the but there’s no need to take the travel the NFL travels because it’s particularly based in the north Americas so it’s trying to grow marketplaces

Around the world soccer is the world’s game you don’t need to introduce the Premier League to the spaces and places they already know exists could it help does it help does it need to be done I think if you start taking it on tour you diminish the core products the cor

Product is a rip rolling success does that mean you stand on your laurels no my my my my idea has always been you own the content why in God’s name would you give the content to middlemen you own it the reasons why Netflix built their business the way that they did is

Because they didn’t have any content yeah the places are wash with money we agreed on that the the clubs will be a wash with money players will get richer hopefully not agents will get richer well hopefully not hopefully there’ll be more governance there’s no need for the players to get richer

They’re too they’re far they’re paid too much as it is but and the and the reality of it is is that there should be some controls in place and there should be some controls in place so that football clubs are run sustainably they don’t need individuals to come in and

Supplement or make them survive capital expenditure is one thing keeping a football club alive is another um and you’d like to think that there’s going to be governance that’s one thing I hope the independent regulator when it comes in does which is interesting that David Bernstein talked about in a different

Capacity the other day about the fact it could be in for a temporary period of time I’d be for that and they if you put wage controls in place then football clubs become sustainable entities that you don’t worry about the glazers you don’t worry about Simon Jordan owning a

Football club you don’t worry about Tony Bloom owning a football club and how much he’s prepared to back it for and how will that go on in perpetuity you don’t worry about Roman Abramovic you don’t worry about these guys you worry about actually the commercial Minds that are running the football club and

Deploying the finances okay because the businesses can sustain themselves Simon many people are getting in touch this morning um obviously there is nobody better to talk about uh the backstory to to something like this uh the impact of the amount of money that’s flying around

The game now and what it means for clubs in general what it means for fans there’s a general question Simon just come no name in that one listening to Simon this morning um I’ll be selfish here I want to know what it what it means for me what does it do for fans

That deal does it make it more expensive for us to watch I mean I suppose now that now now that sky are are going to have more games from 202 5 will it will it raise the U amount that people will pay for the subscription well you try

And work out why that would be the case I mean obviously sky are a commercial animal and their job is to make profits yeah and the vehicle that they get a lot of profit from is football because it’s the hook for everything on their platform they’ve gone the the broadcast

Deals have gone from like 180 games to 270 yeah for no extra money right so I mean that’s it work that out for your yourself it’s costs no extra money yeah if we’re talking about the the deals if we if we are correct in our assumption there was

18080 games under the current package which costs 1.7 billion a season we’ve now got 270 games for 1.7 billion pound per season so you know we yeah but they might turn around and say we’re covering more games for you which you will watch we will raise our prices yes but again

The cost implications of it there’s no justification they’ll say the outside broadcast costs are coming in more prevalently but then you say the advertising Revenue that comes as a result of football because you know that the cost implications of putting aett in the middle of big football matches

Generate more Revenue right sky right so commercially you’d like to think that the benefits that Sky have been able to achieve which is getting 50% more games for no extra money should find itself in benefits for the subscriber I wouldn’t be too comfortable that would be the

Case um but again if you look at it and say you’ve gone from Sky have gone from 128 games to 2115 and they don’t appear to have paid any more money for it right and and and we’ve got the the Premier League singing from the rooftops that this is a wonderful

Deal it’s a wonderful deal because it hasn’t diminished is there any reason why it should diminish is there any lacking lacking in profitability in sky is there any lacking in popularity we’re listening to Dana strong tell us that the viewing figures are as big as they’ve ever been in fact they’re bigger

They’ve opened up whole new channels of of communication to younger generation and to women so with that in mind when you actually dissect it and pull it apart how great a deal is this for those wonderful dealmakers at the Premier League I’m not surprised that there’s been some dissenting voices coming out

From a couple of chairman in the Premier League saying right excuse me yeah yeah we’ve given them we’ve given the broadcasters an additional 100 games or or or certainly 90 more games we’ve given them a 50% increase in the in the live broadcasts for for no increased revenue does that

Make doeses I don’t know if I’m if I’m not making sense but that’s me the broadcaster is the winner absolutely the broadcaster is the winner there’s Dom in Liverpool Simon Jim ask Simon have we not got the overseas deals wrong here can can we not any longer charge them

More and keep it cheaper for us in this country well you can charge people what you want it’s whether they’ll pay it or not yeah yeah you know the bottom line is is that their models are different to our model we have we are paying for the

The the the success of Sky sorry the success of premier league around the world because by the very nature of the proposition in this country it’s a enabling deals the Australians can pay or the North Americans can pay $400 million for a package sell it to their subscribers whether it’s on whichever

Platform you want to buy it from whether it’s peacock or whichever one it is you’re looking at it through and as a subscriber in America you can watch pretty much what we’re watching in this country our product Our Fair coming from our league and you can watch it in

America for a fraction of the price that’s right well that’s not lost on many people this morning Simon I’m a Liverpool fan even with this deal how come you cannot watch every Premier League game in this country but you can abroad and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper

Are we going to get to that point in this country Simon that we will be able to watch every single Premier League game live I think I I think there’s absolutely space for it I mean I was listening to analysis last night on on sky from John Cross about that there was

An Overkill in football during Co what absolute driil the televisual figur were through the ceiling the one thing it showed that the appetite was absolutely ferocious for more sport not less sport more sport now does it kill the Golden Goose well clearly not but if you’re if

You’re at 200 if you’ve gone from 180 to 270 and you think that’s a model that works it’s not a big leap to go from 270 to 380 I think personally you don’t have to watch it if you don’t want to you should be able to watch as much sport or

As little sport as you want I think there’s an absolute space for every single Premier League game to be shown yeah um for stop yeah and and I don’t see why anyone would be resistant to that now there’s no evidence that it takes away from live I know that someone

Said earlier on I’ll hang on Simon when when West Ham are playing we at South End get less attendances well you know maybe that’s an argument you can raise at times but the bottom line is is that you know and it’s also the job of the

Top to feed the bottom whether they like it or they don’t the only reason the Premier League exists is because of the pyramid and because of the fact they were licensed by the fa who are supposed to govern the game and that meant that the the efl who were amateurs that turn

Down deals with the Premier League should be the beneficiary of a reasonable proportion of the top end money sure well TV money has gone to an extraordinary new level now 6.7 billion TV rights deals Jim White and Simon Jordan Monday to Friday mornings from 10: on a.m. on da via the talks sport

    1. As and when Sky lose the PL, they're finished.

Silly of the PL to sell to Sky and BT at a cheaper rate per annum than they had previous. It would be easier and better if an Amazon had bought it, so it's all on One platform that can be paid for per game or as a purely PL package instead of being forced to have a an "entertainment package" before paying extra for the football.

With 6 years they've also put a hold on any potential to create their own platform.

3 oclock thing is pointless. But even without that some games cant be watched. You can pay for Sky and BT and find yourself streaming a game at 3 oclock or whilst another game is on TV.

The Amazon games in December are good as you can watch whichever game you like out of all the games that are actually on.

    2. Tbh if i didnt play fantasy football i wouldnt watch football at all now. When your team isnt winning its not so fun, you notice the bad parts of the game way more

    3. USA is the market that could see the money in the Premier League go to new levels. The NFL is the richest league in any sport just by being popular in the USA and the USA TV channels are richest in the world and pay hundreds of billions for sport. The Premier League is exploding in popularity in the USA, to such an extent that one of the most popular sitcoms in the USA is about the Premier League in Ted Lasso. The Premier League has the smart idea built into their USA TV contract that at least one game a week on free to air TV in the USA giving the Premier League unprecedented viewership in the USA. That is why the American TV rights have seen the most growth of any region because it has gone from 600 million to 3 billion in just 10 years. And because it is getting decent ratings in the USA, if there is a bidding war between USA networks for the Premier League TV rights, you could triple the amount of money the Premier League is earning.

    4. I haven't always agreed with Mr Jordan, but respect to your comment that "players are overpaid". I wonder how much more effort would be seen from numerous players if they were on Performance Related Pay?

    5. This week having games on Amazon has been awesome
quick easy and can turn of commentary whilst you watch
I honestly wish Amazon had all games all the time
Prime much cheaper than sky aswell

    6. Protects the lower clubs could be an argument, but with our hospitality and pubs struggling over recent years. Showing all the games would help increase revenue for that industry. This would also increase the local community because week in week out we can watch our great teams play. People who can't afford to go the games don't magically grow money on a tree because of a blackout and can afford £100 for a trip to see their team. The Premier League is built upon the fans of this country, working class attending game, increasing revenue and demand for the sport. It isn't right that now it has became such a world recognised product that the broadcasters can just rinse the British Public. What happened to value for money and having a good product.

    7. I find it funny that out of everything simon wants to regulate players pay

Transfer money is where money is be8ng wasted

Limit players wages and no one will come to the league
