24 my name is Valerie Gan story I am a civil servant I work at the road research laboratory and I’m a scientific assistant I knew Michael John gregston he worked at the road research laboratory it was there I got to know him on the 22nd August I saw Michael

Gregston in the evening when we got to the cornfield we pulled in 5 or 6 ft from the road it was late evening most quiet at Twilight I had been to that same place before we were there for just over half an hour before anything happened help if it

Wrong we were both very scared and asked the man what he wanted I’m A desperate man this is a hold up roll down the window and he said turn around you face the front kept on saying to us face the front face the front don’t look round we

Didn’t see his face we couldn’t we left the cornfield with Michael driving and the Man in the back seat behind me the gun was pointing at Mike and he said keep facing the front and don’t look round the gunman knew the bare Hotel Maiden head gregston was ordered to stop

At a milk vending machine and sent into a shop to buy cigarettes and then to stop at a petrol station for more fuel although gregston and story offered to give him all their money and in the car the man appeared to have no plan and seemed to want them to stay with him

They drove around the suburbs of North London apparently aimlessly the journey continued along the A5 through St Albans which the gunman mistakenly insisted was Watford before joining the A6 we tried to attract attention as we’ve been driving along the A6 with M trying to flash the reversing

Light I think he was trying to do SOS but on one occasion the car behind obviously didn’t know his M code and uh sort of drove past us doing this sort of business as if to indicate that there was a light at the back yeah at intervals he would say turn right

Here turn left here after we’d been on the A6 for a while he said we’ll have to stop so I can have a kip at Deadman’s Hill the man ordered gregston to pull into a layby gregston at first refused but the Man became aggressive agressive and threatened them with the gun the man

Then said he wanted to sleep and that he would have to tie them up story and gregston pleaded with him not to shoot them don’t shoot us you won’t shoot us will you and he said well if I was going to shoot you I would have done it by Now at gunpoint gregston was taken out to find some rope from the boot what is happening what can we do to persuade this man to go away and leave us you know just take the car and go away The man said to Mike pass that bag over Mike picked the bag Up I screamed and I said you bastard you shooked him why did you do that why you sh him and he said he moved too quick there was the stench of blood still and there had been this horrendous noise and I could actually hear the blood dripping out of Mike’s Head he said get out of the car he pointed the gun at me and said get in if you don’t get in then I will shoot I said well I’ve got to get a doctor please please I begged him he told me to turn around he said um kiss

Me kiss me and I said no come on and he said yes we were facing one another at this point and a car came along the A6 from behind me and the headlights illuminated his face and that was the real the only real Glimpse that I had of him just a few seconds

Almost in the headlights they were just full on his face then he said uh get into the back of the car and pointed the gun at me give you five and started to count I mean I was just so terrified I didn’t know what was going to happen and

Um well they shot was he then raped me he then ordered story to drag Greg’s Body out of the car to the edge of the layby 2 or 3 MERS away before ordering her back into the car to start it for him and demonstrate the operation of the

Gears and switches it was clear he either had not driven before or was unfamiliar with a Morris Miner story then left the car and returned to sit beside gregston body and he he walked away again and then he turned around I suppose he was about I don’t know 10 feet away from

Me and I saw him aim the gun at me and he fired a number of shots I think it was four the first one hit me and I fell over after the fourth shot he Reloaded The Gun and he fired several more shots and I laid as still as I possibly

Could I think with hindsight I couldn’t have moved but I didn’t know that at that stage I tried not to breathe because I could hear him coming towards me and he he kicked me with his foot to see if I was dead I suppose and I just kept so quiet hardly

Breathing and he must have satisfied himself that I was as dead as my was and he got into the car and I heard him drive away satisfied he had killed her the gunman drove off Southward with much crashing of gears in the direction of Lon Michael Greg battery story set off

From slau last night to organize the bedf checkpoints in a motor rally for the staff of the road research laboratory where they worked they picked up a hitchhiker in the small hours of this morning they were pushed out onto the pant of grass behind me now screened

Between this lby and the A6 Road 8 m south of Bedford at A4 to 7 they were found by a Workman Mr gregston shot in the head and M story in the chest the shooting at Deadman’s Hill was the most notorious crime of its day it led to Britain’s longest investigation and

Murder trial while we are anxious to trace a man of the following description aged about 30 years 5’6 proportionate build dark brown hair palish face um brown eyes at 6:30 p.m. the car was discovered in ilford the gunman whose erratic driving had been noticed by Witnesses had abandoned it at 7:15 in

The morning the Morris Miner was taken to Scotland Yard for detailed forensic examination the next day the A6 murder weapon was found on a London bus a 38 Enfield revolver had been hidden with 60 rounds of ammunition on the top deck under the back seats the police issued an appeal to

Boarding house Keepers to report any unusual or suspicious guests the manager of the Alexandra Court hotel reported a man who had locked himself in his room for 5 days after the murder and the police picked him up the suspect falsely identified himself as Frederick Durant he was actually Peter Lewis Alon a

Drifter surviving on an inheritance and the proceeds of gambling Alon was the son of a senior figure at Scotland Yard Alon claimed he had spent the evening of 22nd August with his mother and the following night at the Vienna Hotel maida veale the police quickly confirmed this and Alon was released however ever

Vienna Hotel a down Market boarding house which attracted loners and Drifters would become pivotal to the case and at the center of an extraordinary coincidence Alon had stayed in room six at the Vienna on the night of the murder 3 weeks later the hotel manager found two used cartridge

Cases in room 24 they matched the murder weapon then suddenly the porter at the hotel changed his statement and later claimed that alfon hadn’t stayed in room 6 at all but had stayed in room 2 4 the room with the cartridge cases the police reinterviewed Alon and then stood him

Before Valerie’s story a special identity parade was held at her hospital I found myself in a situation that I’d never ever been in before I suppose I did feel I had to pick somebody out I I don’t know what went through my mind I picked out somebody quite innocent and um that was

That Valerie story did not recognize Alon in an identity parade and he was released 4 days later having been detained on a charge of attempting to rape maker Dalal who also failed to pick him out William nuds was at the time of the crime the manager at the Vienna hotel and told

Police that room 24 had previously been occupied by a Mr J Ryan who had asked the way to the bus stop for a number 36a bus Han ratty feared arrest for his latest house break-ins and on October the 5th 1961 he telepone Scotland Yard to say he was not the man they were looking for and that he had been in Liverpool on the day in question and stressed his innocence of the as6 murder the police

Attention shifted from Alon and hanra now became the chief suspect he was finally arrested at the stonia cafe in Blackpool on the 11th of October 3 Days Later Valerie was able to pick him out of an identity Parade Han ratti’s trial was the longest on record at the time it took place at Bedford before Mr Justice Gorman from the 22nd of January to the 17th of February 1962 hanra initially maintained that he had been in Liverpool with three men whom he would not or could not name

But then on the 9th of February ch his story saying that he had been in real the defense was able to trace the owner of The Boarding House in that town who had a room with a green bath in it as hanra had described the owner Mrs Grace Jones remembered somebody fitting Han

Rat’s description staying there but was uncertain of the dates other guests were unable to identify him as having been there there is little doubt that this change of story irreparably damaged Han’s defense which could otherwise show considerable reasonable doubt he was found guilty after the jury deliberated for 9

Hours I’m finding this letter very hard to put together I still find it very hard to believe what is going to happen but Mom I promise you that I will face it like a man I’m sure that is the way you and Dad would want it and I hope

That this will Open the Eyes of many people and what I have said will one day be proved to the world the time is getting near and when it comes I’ll be thinking of you and Dad so until we meet again you will always be in my thoughts so God bless you all

Your Everlasting son Jim on the morning of April 4th 1962 James hanra convicted of the asic’s murder was taken from his cell for the last time outside protesters laid a wreath at the prison Gates these flowers are for James hanra who like Evans and Bentley has been murdered by our so-called civilized state

One day the executioners and accusers will have to answer to their crime James hanra was hanged at Bedford prison his execution fired a campaign to clear his name making his case one of the most controversial in British legal history Han rti’s family to this day have maintained his Innocence [Applause]
