Welcome back to my channel. Welcome to Thailand. in Phuket. The topic of today’s video is: Avoid this airline if you want to bring your bike to Thailand! But which airline it will be. I’ll reveal later in this video. First we’ll go on tour for a bit.

And barely on the tour, I saw two accidents. Twice by scooter. Here downhill from Patong Hill. from Patong beach. we go up a disgustingly steep mountain out of town. which I just tortured myself up. and the descent is just as steep. and there was already a motor scooter in the first corner.

But I think it was a Thai. and the second scooter accident was with a “farang”. well, foreigners. The Thais call all western foreigners farang. like Europeans, Americans, Australians, New Zealanders etc. The problem is, our driving license is not recognized anyway. and the international driving license is also not recognized.

You can ride a scooter here. and as a rule you have nothing to fear. But let an accident happen and then the trouble starts. Most of the time you pay a certain amount and the matter is settled. but you are left with the damage. It is not clear who is to blame.

But pay and the matter is settled. And that’s the same thing with the international driver’s license. is tolerated but not recognized. and often you will be stopped simply because you are not wearing a helmet. Sometimes that is much worse or they are just looking for a reason to take some money from you.

But well, that’s how it is. I’d rather ride a bike. I don’t need a driver’s license for this. and get through relatively safely. Here we are in a cordoned-off area, like a park. around a reservoir. Normally this is only intended for bicycles. But here I see a car driving again. Hmm…

Ride a few scooters, they’re apparently allowed in. But otherwise this is actually a bicycle route. or for jogging. That’s pretty nice, we’re just driving along here for a bit. Maybe I wanted to do an extra tour. Maybe this one belongs to the park, I have no idea. and up there is the reservoir.

We’ll drive up there briefly so we can see the lake too. See the lake. And then we continue towards the Big Buddha. because today, oh wait! We have a cattle here. Shout out! Yeah, I have no idea what they want with the car here.

Normally cars are not allowed to drive here. but well, that’s Thailand. Amazing Thailand. Today we are going to the big Buddha. a large statue on a hill. must be very impressive. I wanted to take a look today. the tour is approx. 70km and 1300 meters in altitude.

It feels like some of these altitude meters have already been completed to Patong. but in the end it was only 200 meters or so. but felt like 600. it was so miserably steep. but I keep forgetting how steep Thailand can be or is. My gear ratio here is a triple crank.

Imagine that, I have a racing bike with triple gears. Does something like that still exist today? No, it doesn’t exist anymore. but this is my commuter bike. and made of aluminum. This time I took a soft bag with me when traveling. and with aluminum bicycles. happens least of all. where the.

The wheels facing outwards were in the bag. and who took all the pressure. if any suitcase was slammed on it. but everything survived, nothing happened. and this triple crank should actually be easy. but there is only a 25 tooth cassette at the back. and 30 teeth at the front. 25 at the back.

Is still a bit difficult. on such steep climbs. another car. like here in Thailand. Now we are right up at the lake. I’ll show you briefly. and then we continue towards Buddha. Apparently cars are allowed to drive here. That was misinformation on my part, I saw it in a video.

There the video creator told. Cars are not allowed here. but there are also signs here. that the road here should be shared with bicycles. like this one for example. so. Cars have access here. at least to the parking lot.

Are they allowed to drive around here? Yes apparently, otherwise the sign wouldn’t be here. Strange! But ok, there’s not much going on. you have peace and quiet. That fits! But you can only ride a bike here in an anti-clockwise direction.

Because the signage on the road is only ever in one direction. I think it’s on the back of this road sign. it is written. yes, forbidden for cyclists. So only allowed in one direction. counterclockwise. I don’t know what the dumbass here is called. I’ll show it below. even if I look now.

I forgot it again in two minutes. and I can’t pronounce it anyway. But now let’s talk about the airline topic. It’s really cheap here right now. There is no traffic here, you can cycle and chat a bit. and you know who follows my channel.

He knows I’m a fan of taking my own bike with me. and this was usually done quite inexpensively. For example, if you take an airline like Thai Airways, you have 30kg free. and it doesn’t matter if it’s one or two pieces of luggage. as long as you stay under 30kg.

You can take your bike with you despite the bulky luggage size. pastries. Take your luggage size with you. and there won’t be a Thai rooster crowing afterwards. I always had my bike case with me. and always had 29.6kg with my travel bag and didn’t pay anything extra.

Only this time I didn’t find a good deal on Thai Airways. So I didn’t have the leisure to fly with them now. Qatar Airways it’s the same. Oh, doggy. is hungry. Oh! and Qatar airways is similar. I think it was 25kg or 30kg? I don’t really know anymore.

But the same rule is there. Only the kilograms count and not the number of pieces of luggage. but then there are the other airlines. There you will be charged per piece of luggage. They allow 30kg, but only one piece of luggage.

You have a second piece of luggage, even if it only weighs 5kg, and the first one already weighs 20kg. Then it doesn’t matter, you pay for the second one with the 5kg extra fees. and that can sometimes be quite expensive. This is what happened with Kuwait Airlines. the flight was very cheap.

I got it for 650 euros. I was happy. cheap flight. and 32kg free. but just one piece of luggage. but I wasn’t sure whether it would work that way. despite taking a bike with you. and I stay under 32kg.

Or whether they stand in the way and ask me to pay for the second suitcase. but I’ve already taken that into account. I was expecting around 100-150 euros. This is usually how much it costs with other airlines. for example at KLM. There you only pay 100 euros per journey.

That’s ok, the total for both routes is 200 euros. and have your own bike with you. Renting one costs the same. But the advantage is that you have the bike you know under your back. You are used to it and don’t have an unfamiliar bike.

Where you don’t know who drove it and how it was driven. and what damage that has caused. that you may not even know yourself. and that’s what I expected. A maximum of 300 euros. and then I come there in Frankfurt. I arrive there with my bag. He inspected me from afar.

I’ve already watched it. According to the motto: Oh, someone comes with excess luggage. Then he asked me if I registered it? online check-in. I said: No. That didn’t work. I tried several times, but I couldn’t get into the system.

I kept getting the message that my booking doesn’t exist. I was happy about it anyway. I thought my booking didn’t exist. but I still received text messages constantly and was bombarded with them. Hello! Wedding. I was constantly bombarded with flight changes. therefore it had to already exist. Anyway, I got there.

Then he asks me whether I have booked the second suitcase in advance. I said no! because. you could only book a regular suitcase. but no sports luggage. There was no option for that. I always booked this at the airport. I would always get there and they would tell me how much it cost.

So I just took the bike with me to the airport. and he said: Hm, yes. Costs 200 euros. Normally another 50 euros more for oversize. So 250.- I’m like: What’s going on? Yes, he waives the 50 euros for me. But I shouldn’t say he was. and shouldn’t tell anyone.

But he has to ask for the 200 euros for the second piece of luggage. because it may be when I check in Bangkok again. and depending on the agent who is there at the time. I already know that this is an idiot. can it be or will it be that I pay 250.-.

A cool 450 euros for the bike there and back. while I only paid 650 euros for the flight alone. So that’s a hammer then. That’s about two thirds of the airfare again for the bike. I’ve never flown so expensively. And then I was in Bangkok. Now I’m in Phuket.

I still had to fly from Bangkok to Phuket. One hour and 20 minutes. So I thought to myself, Chiang Mai is about the same distance. The last time I paid 16 euros. Yes, far from it. This time I paid 33 euros. So another hefty surcharge. Actually twice as much.

Then I thought to myself: What happened here? So either I got the wrong airline. both within Thailand and intercontinentally. or they have all raised the prices so much for additional services. The flight price itself was cheap. So on the return flight I also have to pay the 33.-. that was 1260 Thai baht.

And the 250 euros for the bike. So all in all it wasn’t a bargain. What I didn’t know at the time was when I arrived at the airport counter in Bangkok. The 250 euros that I was threatened with in Frankfurt were waived. or were not even required.

I arrived at the counter and placed my bike bag on the conveyor belt. it was weighed. I smiled at the lady and she smiled back. and told her there’s a bike in there. and she: Oh a bike, nice. and she started typing everything into the computer and labeling it.

And I was just waiting for her to tell me the price. then she told me to leave the bag over at the special baggage department. with bulky luggage. I said: Yes, sure, no problem, I’ll do it. and then she said: The second suitcase please.

Then I took the bag down and placed the second suitcase on the conveyor belt. She weighed the suitcase, entered everything back into the computer and labeled the suitcase. the suitcase disappeared behind her. and she prints out the boarding pass. puts it in my hand and wishes me a good flight.

I was completely amazed. I had already taken out all my credit cards virtually. but nothing was. I didn’t have to pay anything. She also didn’t mention anything about me being waived. or any comment to that effect. nothing. So I saved myself the 200 or 250 euros for the return flight.

In the end it was only 200 euros, which is ok. Paid in Frankfurt. And on the previous flight from Phuket to Bangkok I didn’t pay 33 euros again. I only paid this on the flight from Bangkok to Phuket. That surprised me even then. So I saved the bike fee on both return flights.

And in the end I didn’t pay that much. But I wouldn’t consider that as a rule. I think it was a matter of luck. or daily form of the responsible employees there. I wouldn’t assume that it always works like that. so from there. I stand by the statement.

I don’t want to fly with Kuwait Airlines again. because I don’t want to take that risk again. But I’ve already made a plan for next time. There is a really cool bike case that costs a few thalers. This is the smallest bike case there is. I got the tip from Kieran Barry.

Greetings go out. Shout out to Kieran Barry. I’ll link his channel above. On today’s ride. Can you take a look? He is a Welshman who also constantly travels around the area. He’s been to Chiang Mai dozens of times and he has this suitcase. and the suitcase is called Post Carry.

To do this you actually have to completely disassemble the bike. Fork out, seat post out, handlebars out, wheels out. Pedals, derailleur. But you have to do that anyway when you dismantle the bike for the bike case if it’s bigger. Except for the fork.

So not a lot of extra work, but then everything is compressed very small. and you just… a second suitcase. Laugh. they live peacefully together here. no territorial wars between roosters, chickens and dogs. Then you simply have a second suitcase and you only pay for that.

OK, with Kuwait Airways you pay 200 euros for a second suitcase. but normally. The option is available with other airlines and is not that expensive. If it’s 100-150 euros, then that’s ok. and it is packed compressed. it is easy to handle. you get it in a taxi. you don’t need a huge box.

Or a huge wheeled suitcase. which you then have to try to get into a car. Because they often come with small cars. I don’t know, like mini Toyotas or something. Then you have to take care to get it in. With a bicycle case you have lost. That’s probably where this thing comes from.

Man, there’s a lot going on here. This is probably where the thing comes from and when I travel it will hopefully be without any problems. and then the whole thing becomes a little easier. Yes, my tip at this point. Avoid Kuwait Airlines. if you want to bring your bike to Thailand.

Because that’s no joy. The next airline will be Singapore Airlines. At least they have a well-known name. Let’s see what it’s like for them. I’ll report back then, but that won’t be until next year. Now we are around the lake again. It’s that quick. Chat a little and you’re done.

The gate is up there again. where I’m just through and you can look to the left. What’s going on now? Peep peep! The camera beeped. Battery already empty or what? Hello? Are you still recording? Yes! It’s still filming. How much battery do we have left? No, it’s still completely full.

Now I’m leaving here again. respectively. on the original route. I have to go behind there, but there wasn’t a road leading away? Isn’t that a circuit? maybe it’s the street down there. OK! I’ll drive on. chatted way too much. Not so much chatter, more cycling. Let’s go to the big Buddha.

Now it goes up there. He is enthroned up there, the Big Buddha, the white one. quite a lot of traffic here, everyone wants to drive up. That’s the road that winds up. I don’t know how steep it will be, probably super steep again. Because we are in Thailand, everything is always steep.

But I think there’s a great view up there. As small as it looks from here, the bigger it will be on site. So, Bai gaen loi, here we go. Yes, as expected, damn steep. Damn steep. Right at the beginning. 15% minimum. I soon couldn’t turn the crank anymore.

And that after recovering from an infection. Been sick for 10 days. I haven’t driven for two weeks. The pulse was correspondingly high and the legs were weak. Now things are going so smoothly here. but overall things are still going up. But the worst is over, I think.

No, I don’t have any money with me. Only water. No. Something like this should be supported less. they don’t have such a nice life. carting tourists back and forth. are tied here all the time. Then you’d better go to a rescue center for elephants.

Where such people are taken in and nurtured here. and can run around freely. It makes far more sense to leave money there than here. sitting on such a stupid seat. and then 10 minutes of abusing the elephant. to carry one from A to B.

And then he is tied up here again for 5 hours. Yes, and that was it again. I’ll end the video right here. at the Big Buddha. the thunderstorm is already starting. Oh dear oh dear! It gets really dark back there. I think it’s going to be a wet ride home.

I’ll make sure I get back down the steep hill. then I have to go over the steep hills near Patong. that will be fun again. Oh, it’s totally raining over there, I just see. You definitely won’t see that on the camera. where the lamp is.

On the right there is no rain, on the left everything is in the rain cloud. let’s see if that works. Anyway. I thank you for watching. As I said, Kuwait Airlines can only be recommended to a limited extent.

On the other hand, if you add everything up, it also comes to the amount of other airlines. but they offer the bike included for the price. i.e. where you can take the bike with you within the baggage allowance limit. You then pay between 900 and 1000 euros.

Which is what I ended up paying. but with two partial amounts. once for my ticket and once for the bike. In the end it comes to the same thing. but let’s take a look at Singapore Airlines. with which I will fly next time. The ticket was also quite cheap.

Let’s see what they charge for the bike. Anyway, thanks for watching. See you next time. probably here again from Thailand. Until then. Ciao Ciao!
