5MV-M20l – Ebike: Orbea Gain: less than 10kg?
    ————————————-
In a previous video (https://youtu.be/6sZ8VimsCJ8?si=C2Fwz8NDGkFnxQTj) I lightened my Orbea Gain M30 from its out-of-the-box weight (mass) of 13kg down to 11.5kg. In the same video I found that I could also get the weight of the bike down to just under 11kg with an extra modest spend. All of the changes in that previous video were practical and indeed I had applied many of them to my bike.

In this video I discard any notion of practicality (for my use) and cost to see if I could get the weight of the ebike down below 10kg. As some of the changes were impractical for me, I treated this as a paper exercise. Did I find a route to getting my Orbea Gain below 10kg? Watch to find out.

    About the 5MV channel
    ————————————–
My name is Terry and I love cycling. I have named my channel “Five Minute Velo” (5MV). I have called it 5MV because the videos I upload will (mostly) last no longer than five minutes. Each video will cover just one subject that is described in the title. Although the channel is mainly about cycling on the road, I will also cover some light (gravel) off road riding and cycle touring from time to time. No matter what, much of the advice will be pertinent to many branches of the sport/pastime.

I am new to posting videos on YouTube (May 2020) and I have much to learn, particularly in terms of presentation style and production quality. As such I welcome constructive comments that will help me improve the videos that I produce and upload.

There may be some dry humor in some of the videos, so dry it may not always be obvious :-).

    Terry

In this video I carry out an exercise to see whether I could get the weight of my ebike down below 10 kg in June 2023 I purchased an Ora gain m30 that’s a carbon framed ebike fitted with Shimano 105 equipment it was a 2021 model out of the box it weighed in at

Just under 13 kg quite light for an ebike but I still wasn’t satisfied so I set about lightening it some more the video in the top right shows the changes that I made which brought the weight down to just under 11 and2 kilos I further speculated that by spending an

Extra modest sum I could bring the weight down to just under 11 kilos in this video I’m going to pretend I’m part of the marketing department so I’m going to remove all cost and practicality constraints we’ll start with the group set or rather just the brifters and the

Gear changes this is because I’ve already lightened the other group set components the upgrade is expensive and saves just 80 gam but I did say I was ignoring cost and practicality constraints as I detailed in the earlier video one of the biggest weight savings that I made was associated with the

Wheels if if I use these tubular rims instead of tubeless rims I can save roughly 80 g per wheel if I shod these with Victoria Chrono CS tubular tires at about 175 G each once I take into account the adesive tape that’s about a 50 g saving per wheel in total that’s

About another 250 g reduction in the bike cockpit area I’ve already changed the brift however I can go further I can swap out these Riser bars that I’ve been using for the super light carbon bars that saves me around 113 gam I can also swap out the original Ora stem and Associated

Parts which come in at a relatively heavy 300 G if I replace it with this carbon fiber stem and Garin out front mount that saves around a further 100 G so that’s another 210 G of weight saved there are a few more little things I could do like removing a few more links

From the chain trimming the handlebars and the seat pin a bit further but to be honest this wouldn’t come to much more than say 100 gram so that’s it I reached my final bike weight at the outset of this video I was hoping to get the total rejected

Mass below 10 kg I only got to 10.33 kilos so obviously I I failed I would expect that if I spent more time researching components I could get that mass down a bit further but to be honest I think getting below 10 kilos would be a real

Struggle okay let’s look at this from a slightly different angle Mara who make the x35 system that’s fitted to my bike claims its mass adds three and a half kilos to a bike so if I take the mass of the ebike system off of the theoretical

Mass of this bike so it’s 10.33 kilos minus 3.5 you 6.83 kilos so the underlying bike weighs in under 7 kilos Now by any standards that is a light bike so reducing the mass of this current bike below 10 kilos is pretty much impossible the newer Mara ebike

System the X20 is reportedly 300 G less than the x35 hence one of the newer or gains fitted with that X20 system could at least in theory get much closer to that 10 kilo Target in that earlier video without making too many compromises I managed to

Get the mass of my ebike down to just under 11 kilos in this video I threw away some of the practicalities to see whether I could get the mass down to under 10 kilos I failed and that’s because I was bumping up against the Practical lower

Limit for any acoustic bike of less than 7 kilos now the only reason I carried out this exercise was because of curiosity I didn’t actually want or need to reduce the weight of my ebike and at 11 1/2 kilos it doesn’t really affect my performance or the enjoyment of riding

The bike so with that I am happy

    1. A bike (cycle), is a bike. An eBike, is just that, an eBike.

Where does this “Acoustic“ term come from as it has nothing to do with a cycle, unless of course you are referring to the motor noise made by an eBike?
