Okay. Here are the proper “Special Purpose” tools for changing bearings and dealing with special issues as they come up. We will change these bearings.
Hello and welcome to Mike’s Garage if you’ve already subscribed to our Channel thank you very much if you haven’t please do and when you do be sure and tap on the little button that relates directly to the notifications notification Bell that’s it notific I’m a little bit off tonight anyway the notification Bell
That so you’ll be notified every time we put up a new video and I just I love seeing all those subscriptions there we’ve got over 80,000 subscribers now and it makes me really happy means somebody’s enjoying this stuff anyway here we are I was working on
Something here in the in the shop and and Mike came by and said hey why aren’t we doing a video of that I said well we’ve done this before they he says well we’re doing it again I said okay um basically what it is is I’m
Fixing up a wheel for a friend of mine I uh found the wheel at a swap meet and had a great time and lo and behold it turned out I got the wheel from his cousin which is cool because his cousin is like this super nice guy who didn’t
Want to charge me for the wheel anyway so it’s really cool the way it all worked out um anyway what I’m doing is this wheel is not off a springer and it’s going on to my friend Springer and and so I’m going to have to offset the
Rim on it to allow for the fact that it’s going on a springer and I will show that probably in another video on this video what we’re going to do is we’re going to put these bearings in and I was starting to take them out and had a little trouble with the
Tool so I’m finally getting it going now now on his bike he has a 3/4 in axle and these bearings are set up for a different bike which has a 1-in axle so I’m needing to change the bearings and these are the the modern sealed ball bearings so I’m tightening this tool
Here to pull this bearing out with and uh we’ll be ready to do that here in a minute and then I’ll show the tool as we pull out the other bearing with it okay cuz I’m not showing it very good right now and I’m sorry I’m not taking it out
And starting over all I was trying to do was get a job done here M and Mike oh he he wants to be productive about it you know so okay okay we’ll be productive we’ll be like I said I’ve done this on on videos before
And I it really is a good idea to to redo some of our some of the videos we’ve done to do the same stuff again because first off we uh get better the more we do just like everybody else in other words if I’ve shown how to do
This once and you didn’t get it real well maybe if I do it again I’ll show it a little better and you’ll and it’ll sink in a little better because I did a better job I don’t know it just seems like it well it does seem like it I mean
You know nobody’s perfect and it’s like you’re trying to show everything with the camera and quite often I don’t hold it right so that you can even you know yeah although you do real good with it anyway so you do very well certainly pleases me okay now what I’m going to
Do is this piece here is going to pull the whole thing out for us so as I tighten this nut okay I just want to be sure that that bolt is in there all the way because what that does is that tool let me show you the other tool this
Is for the for the bearing we’re going to put in actually but what this does let me show it real well is this lip right here goes into the bearing and and goes between the space between the bearing and the spacer there’s a spacer between the two bearings so you get that
In there which is what I pound in with my trusty little Rawhide mallet I grease it up so that it doesn’t wear too badly then there’s a bolt goes in from the other side that spreads these fingers so that this so that this lip is really tight in that Groove then we put
This piece which is going to catch that bearing when it comes out and this nut tightening against this piece here he going to pull draw that bearing right out of there and like I said we’ll show it on the next bearing here maybe we’ll be able to show it a little better
Better but here it is and so this is a 58 and this is like a 1 and an e okay we got it nice and tight now we’re going in the proper direction we’re going to tighten it and it’s going to pull that bearing right out of
There now this is in a in an effort to show more tools keep getting asked by everybody to show more tools and tell me what brand they are and where I can buy them okay now all of the major aftermarket suppliers carry some pretty good tools uh I usually use gim’s machine
That’s what most of my special purpose tools are I think I can see coming out I don’t know I don’t know it must be coming out yes it is I see it there it is see through one of the little Windows is that a window to the world
Yeah now I greased up all these tools where they rubbed together so that they won’t wear out any faster than necessary and this bearing is just about out of here in fact the magical words you ready and there it is okay now I want to take this tool apart
Slowly you want to show them where the lip grabs it right there mhm there it is see that’s the same as on this tool which is smaller mhm but it’s the same idea and here the bolt is going in all that way to spread it so I’m going to take this apart
Now oh it’s coming right out look at that it’s coming right off that bolt nice yeah I didn’t expect that but there it is and you still getting on to that I mean can you still see it I see through the spokes okay that’s what I was wondering
Because let me get a little closer well I just want people to be able to see it okay now we got that off of there and this washer here acts as a bearing for that nut and here we are with this piece and watch closely that’s it let’s see here just for
Fun I didn’t even know what kind of shape these bearings were in and I really didn’t care they don’t feel bad but we learned something yeah that’s okay now I’m going to look into this Hub because I can okay you want to take a look in
There I did you okay and here’s the spacer okay there’s the spacer oh yeah okay now I’m going to look in there make sure that everybody happy in there everybody looks pretty happy in there now see if I put in do I have the right size spacer for it right length
Spacer uh the other question is I can’t see I can’t use this or can I can I use that big spacer this is the spacer I just pulled out right yeah this is sick you know looks like it’s well it does I just don’t know if that’s a good
Idea because the right size spacer goes against there a whole lot better mhm and I don’t think I like this and if I don’t like it it’s not going to happen I mean it’s just I need one like that you know this one is too short and this
One I think what I’ll have to do is order the right one so as much as I hate to say it another video well I think we can stick with this video video for a moment I would like to tell everybody what’s wrong here I’m switching bearing
Sizes and the spacer that was in there goes like that and it will hit against that but I just I don’t feel good about it I would rather have the proper diameter spacer and the proper length spacer and that’s exactly what I’m going to do so that’s what we’re doing for now
And and I will order one on Tuesday morning probably but I would also like to say couple of things tomorrow is the hippie killer ho down in Winchester California uh opens at 11:00 runs 11: to 6 they’re going to have cars and motorcycles and bands and food and I
Mean just about everything there and it will be a ball it’s put on by some really nice people in Winchester California Califor in fact the same guy cuy Noteboom that we did interview in a past video when he had the hippy killer ho down in Tula well he used to have it in
Winchester and this is kind of an old home sort of a celebration he’s doing tomorrow and we will be there um including the art Department he will be with us and our buddy John and who knows who else is going to come along also I’d like to mention our
Shirts if you go to Pacific mik.com which is our own personal website up in the corner it says shirt store you click on that and you can order t-shirts and baseball caps we do have a really nice baseball cap now with Pacific mic embroidered on it um our newest t-shirt now we do
Have the knucklehead so we have some pretty fun stuff we have a nice shot of baby doll on one shirt and we have we have the knucklehead on the others and the other two they’re just me we don’t we don’t need to go there okay there’s the
Knuckle in the top right you’re right the knuckle is on both of those with me so the knuckle’s getting more more pressed than anybody but anyway uh like I said hopefully we’ll see you at the hippie killer ho down tomorrow and until then I’ll see you out on the road

80,000 Great Videos ! The Magical Notification Bell ! Great Stuff Mike, thanks for the videos !
You should teach classes, take a trailer accross America ! And show how to work on old bikes , not blockheads !
😎🤙
Sorry to bother you via email. I've since spent approximately 100 hrs researching, educating myself and sourcing NOS OEM only parts for my 1984 FLHS. Everything found. Something important I had to work out: my bike model is a mix of FLH and the FX models. Makes finding part numbers easier, now I know.
You definitely learn more with hands-on practical experience.
Enjoyed this video cause you showed just what we run into when wanting a cool part on our bikes that wasn't on it new. Typical half way through stop and order a part for it.
Tool is just like Jim's inner cam bearing puller for the twin cams.
Nice video 👍, my Ultra limited has 122,000 miles and I think I’ll change my wheel bearings this winter just to be safe.
What a great video I'm anxious to learn more about offset it's really not something you see often people using .75 to 1inch conversion bearings and stuff like that.
So are you swapping over to Timken style or just a smaller inner diameter?I'm going to have to start watching your videos on a big-screen somewhere😂
I've had front bearings to go bad on 1975 Shovel with 6 over. It jerk the front wheel and lower legs inward.
I was lucky it happened in front of a wrecking yard. A GM car front outside bearing will work. 1972
Oldsmobile and many other vehicle. Works on the swing arm also.
Amazing what a little grease will do, or not having any. Luck on old
back road easing along 45 mph, not triple digits. Make time to check you bike out.
Pre Trip Inspection 😊
😂…. couldn't remember the bell name either…..so I couldn't help you
Cool 😎👍🇨🇦✌️🇨🇦✌️🔧🔧✌️
Love the videos. If your ever doing cam tensioners on a twin cam I'd love to see a video on it 🙏
Enjoyed this video. Have a great week!
When you say your going to order new-you should say from where. Many of us are at a loss to find suppliers for materials.
thoughts on over size spacer, might slide to the side and throw wheel out of balance!!!! just a thought. good informative video. safe ridin rubber down
Good call, Mike.
Hi Mikes, I just watched your video on Lubing the Chassis, you doing your Knuckle. I was recently lubing the rear Hub on my 46 and was giving the trigger quite a few pulls but did not notice grease coming out from anywhere. Am I pumping it into the Brake Drum or will the cork gasket in there or a seal stop it from going in there and if it does come out where should I be looking for it, ie, the right hand side near the axle spacer. Thanks again for any info.
The English language is all wrong; these type wheel bearings should be known as 'spinsters', & dyed-in-the-wolf old ladies of indeterminable age as 'High talk, captive ball housings'. . I'm bad : )
Nice bearing puller. Camera man Mike I'm glad to see the mosquitoes left you alone this time. ✌🏻
Will it not need the same od as the one inch spacer and then 3/4" id for the 3/4" axle ? And obviously, the same length as the spacer you removed.
HOWdy P-C, …

Any new thoughts or ideas on the Flathead chopper build
Cheers for the vid Mike, ive a roadking with a 3/4 in spindle my mate who i bought the bike off upgraded to Mag wheels that came off a later bike with 1 inch spindle , he put spacers in the bearings [He worked at Rolls Royce] to take up the gap however you have cheered me up in that although i thought you could get the bearing with 3/4 inch centres. ps never thought about the spacer, like you the original spacer is probably ok but the correct spacer is a better idea, Greetings from across the pond England
😎😎🦾🍻
Hay Mike, Jim from Massachusetts. I just bought a second bike, a 97 Softail custom. A bigger swingarm was put in for purpose of bigger tire I guess ? So it was told to me that it needs rear brake so I figured NP 😉. So I took the caliper off and piston was working but pads were a little bit worn but not terrible. So put it all together- blead it great pedal but rear brake keeps locking up tight. So I’m thinking the piston is not retracting. By the morning the tire would turn a little bit. I ordered a new caliper and gonna try that. Have you ever run into a problem like this when as soon as you step on the brake pedal the wheel locks up ? Take care Mike was just curious.
I have a bottom breather evo case. Can I use cylinders, heads and rocker boxes from a head breather on it?
Great video I watched one of your older videos and got brave and bought the tool and did my road kings front bearings this summer. Thank you it makes you feel good to wrench on your own bike.
Hope all is well with your eyes looking forward to your next video
Hey Mike I recently watched your video on the disassembly and reassembly of a Linkert M74 carb. I'm in the process of restoring a 1960 panhead and plan on using the stock carb.During the disassembly process I became aware that the venturi sleeve has essentially welded itself to the carb body and won't fall out so nicely like yours does in the video,In fact this one is stuck pretty good. I've tried heating it, soaking it, running it in a ultrasonic cleaner and taking a brass drift with a flat edge ground on it to try and tap it out with no luck. Any suggestions? In fact I was wondering how important is it to get that out to thoroughly clean the carburetor? Is there any passages underneath that would require cleaning or would I be better off just cleaning everything else and let that be, before I damaged the carb trying to get it out? Thanks for any advice!
