Time so do you know much Veronica where they’re Towing that A380 around um during the day it um it normally goes from where it was parked just around the corner so that they can use the rest of the gates um a little bit freely so I

Think he just goes around the corner uh to park on the western side there out of the way yeah cuz those Gates they can they can use them for like or 1 A380 gate can also be used for 2 737s I think two medium Jets can fit on that one

Absolutely yeah and I think there’s a total is it five a 380 Gates or maybe three Arrow Bridges and three three I think yeah so and and a few standoff Bays too for it yeah so they just get them out of the way because Internationals back and thriving at the

Moment yeah it’s especially this time in the morning it’s a it’s a good little rush I just wish it could continue on all through the day it would be nice wouldn’t it yeah they had their little spurts of Heavies yeah yeah 10:00 a.m. is is the the spurt

10 to 11 for the international departures and our such a shame it can’t continue on all through the day yes my favorites are heavy planes that’s for sure I think everybody loves a heavy but you know here I don’t know if you watched much but the fuers too they’re popular are

They yes everyone loves the yeah cuz in Brisbane too they’re very special like I guess you don’t see them anywhere else in the world like you do here in Brisbane yeah we do have a lot of them absolutely do you have a as an airra controller do

You have a special plane or favorite plane uh my favorite plane it will always be the A380 or um trip 7s yeah trip 7’s always I love an a350 cuz it looks like it’s wearing sunglasses yeah if you see any um see any questions there if anyone has yeah

Okay so we got a China Southern down here the a350 oh yeah yep and uh I’ve just noticed real lately too the um there’s a new uh s uh procedures isn’t there western are now 01 right yeah we do have uh we recently had a change to

Our departure pass so uh some of the Internationals who would normally go off the Western Runway out to the West are now departing right so that flight path takes them initially out over the ocean to the East and then up and over um going over the airport at much

Higher height um and it just causes um it’s better for the on Route controllers causes less congestion that sort of thing so always improving our flight pass here so he’ll take off here and make a rightand turn when and overhead fly overhead the field yeah big right

Hand turn and then stays over the ocean climbing and then eventually you’ll see him on radar go straight over the top of us I actually saw his shadow yesterday when he flew over which terrified me at the time it actually does I was like oh that’s a really big bird oh it’s it’s

China Eastern go overhead M yeah if you see any questions there yeah feel free to I’m sure everyone have lots of questions I know that we’ve got um approximately 500 movements or so that’s my best guess for today is the number I heard uh which is pretty big uh it’s not

Quite as many as Sydney um but it’s right up there with Melbourne as well and that’s a surprising thing aren’t we we’re not too far behind Melbourne no in domestic numbers anyway I guess absolutely and we do also have light aircraft as well um not as many light aircraft out at

Melbourne oh I I just saw a question there have I ever gotten the giggles at work absolutely I have I think you guys heard that one and I had to explain it to you that’s right that that day the fish was was on the runway fish fish on the runway and I

Could not cont my Giggles trying to talk to the safety officer who was retrieving the fish out there that was one of the weirdest things that have found on the on the runway I’ll give him that uh but he did return that fish to the creek

Nearby uh he’s got quite the tale to tell his mate is there any idea how they got there I’m my best guess is we had a lot of pelicans around that day and somebody’s dropped their prize unfortunately uh but it does happen I’ve seen uh some snakes on the

Runway yeah lizards look at the um the clouds there from the Wake hopefully he go straight through it yeah just you can sort of just see the top of that the bottom of that other Cloud there oh that looks so good it’s gone through another one but not much coming out that

Yeah lots of like brown snakes too aren’t they here like the deadly snakes so yeah yeah yeah lots of snakes and lizards and obviously Birds lots of pelicans hanging around2 wind C the ones that just H there some always interesting to watch we also get some

Pigeons or the butcher bird up here oh we call him bazer the a uh just got a question here how big a problem are birds birds are at every airport to be honest and we’re quite near the water um which is not ideal for the bird situation but to be honest they

Move out of the way they they hear the big metal box coming and um and if we see those birds uh we normally um make sure that the pilots well aware that they’re there so that they can avoid them as well so they normally get out of way to be

Honest you do often hear the ground Vehicles report bird sidings too don’t you so absolutely and we immediately pick up the binos and have a look outside as well look like we have Fiji coming on in now they always have a nice Livery on their aircraft it’s a shame we’re not

Seeing the a330s or the a350s I thought maybe being the holidays they might bring them across but we’re not seeing them this one being the max is it the no it’s not is it line a couple of questions here why did I want to work in the tower um I used to

Be a flight uh instructor down in Adelaide um was a pilot for about 6 to seven years and then um1 vacating moving on to the next thing uh I wanted to be a um air traffic controller to be honest when I went to UNI but never thought I’d get into

It um and then it popped up one day when I was thinking about some other jobs and luckily I got into it and it was great changed my life and and you’re in the tower itself aren’t you so yeah absolutely I am up in the control tower take off and Landing

Clearances doing that job that they’re doing right now and there’s there’s two frequencies isn’t there for the tower here in Brisbane yeah so so you got um your legacy Runway which is what we’re looking at 01 right which is on one frequency and then you got your other Runway left the new

Runway on a different frequency occasionally when it’s not as busy they become um a joined frequency so that the one controller can control both runways velocity 45 pass on to F y zero on left CL t so how’s the weather looking for today any we’re expecting some storms I think in the the forecast for this iway yeah I was just on um Air Services um actually not Air Services the uh bomb weather site today and looks like we’ve got some

Potential hail and storms today oh okay to oh yeah look at that look at the cloud is it coming out yep that is that’s my favorite thing right there wake turbulence that goes a show isn’t it it’s invisible but that’s what’s happening in the air it’s definitely

There you don’t want to be going through that got a question there is it possible to stream from the tower unfortunately it’s number would be really cool um we’ve had the best discussions just in the tower um talking about about how we should have like a little viewing

Platform on the top with a cafe or something which would be really cool but unfortunately that’s uh that’s not the case not much work are be getting done if that was the case no it be it’d be quite distracting to be honest you’d want to be out there on your days off

Wouldn’t you oh or you get sick of work you don’t want to come to the airport I mean I’d feel like I’d want to be here but then I wouldn’t want to be here cuz then I’d may as well move in that’s right oh I got got a question here the

Wacky rout in a thunderstorm it’s um that’s a that’s a yeah interesting question to be honest can’t really fly through some of the heavier storms that’s that’s the only reason for it so um our on Route controllers who are absolutely amazing make sure that everybody’s nice and safe and fly around

The um the worst weather they can’t can fly through some bad weather but you don’t want to be flying through the middle of a storm it’s going to get a lot of um turbulence Lightning’s okay but it’s not enjoyable um so sometimes aircraft might end up in a hold or diverting around

Certain areas patches of um bigger weather activity they all have Storm Raiders on board as well so they’ll let Air Traffic Control know where they want to go and how they want to go around it and and that’s an interesting thing too cuz sometimes you hear people say oh the

Airport’s closed it’s not really closed is it it’s just yeah they’re not they’re not choosing to land is that how to say it or yeah so that that storm that we had um a few weeks ago um it’s important that some of the aircraft line up on the

Runway and check the weather radar to make sure they’re not going to fly into something the direction they’re poined exactly so we might need to alter their departure path to make sure that they’re not going to fly into hazardous weather um and sometimes when they know cuz

We’re monitoring that weather if we know that it’s not appropriate for them to land we’ll keep them out in the safe area um until it’s safe to land yep and that’s always a big chat between us and the pilots as well we’ll keep them updated and informed and they’ll let us

Know what they can and can’t do was that um the approach the a New Zealand Triple 7 does coming in what sort of approach is that is is that an approach or uh it could be or the one that comes in yeah it’s Nots is it yeah

Cuz it’s the only one you sort of see I guess the smaller Jets do it as well yeah so yeah most most most of the time it’s the Jets that come in on the IRP approach comes around the corner otherwise they’ll be coming in on the instrument approach all the way down

The Isis which starts over power field oh not power that’s where I used to work that’s where you used over field that’s way I think is is that one down there and you’ll see I used to do my flight training out at Archer field you see them um put their gear down overhead

Arch field cuz that’s like the initial fix of the approach procedure and they start coming down there it’s interesting I’ve done a little bit of flying up in the over and you know why I said powerfield somebody said hello from y ppf The Stomping Ground so forof is that Flight Training Adel down

There still is it yeah Flight Training adelade um is is a big one up there thank you 12 hold position I promise I’m really good at navigating yeah some showers you can see down here down the South oh yeah there coming in now looking at the weather it’s said um

Potential thunderstorms with heavy rain and yeah that big stuff over TW at the moment is at about 2,000 ft at the moment on final which is still pretty good to be honest and if you know you’re on an net approach what’s the minimum you can come

Down for that you know pretty low isn’t it the ILS approach is around about 300 ft depending which one you’re on uh what runways they’re different so we got 737 700 here it’s probably my favorites 737 72 wind 0 1 0 me personally I’ve only done Air Traffic Control in brisban control tower

And I’ve been doing it for about a year uh prior to that I was down in Melbourne doing my training for air traffic control so I spent a year there doing that training velocity 322 contact and that’s where you get sent isn’t it in Australia down to Melbourne yeah everybody goes

Through uh the college at Melbourne for Air Services and then um and then you get sent off to either your appropriate on Route station or um you go off to um your control tower for those of us that are control Towers so who else is up there in the tower with you is It like the amount of people in the tower at the moment what rols you do up there is it clearance up there yep so we got we got clearance um yeah we got clearance up there we got ground which can be um separated into ground South ground domestic and ground

North so that could be potentially three controllers depending on how busy then you got your two Tower controllers um you also have a shift manager who’s up there as well watching over everybody making sure everybody’s so they’re the person sort of standing in the middle are they or yeah they’re

In the middle answering the phones helping everybody out if we’re in a tough spot making sure everybody’s taking their breaks everybody’s got their water Etc making sure we’re all happy 4120 I always struggle to say the word Solomon for some reason Sol and actually that’s a cuz this I

Think this might be flying for I haven’t checked thead it is it so is that confusing for you people up the tower to be A2 call sign air and then occasionally I’m more confused when it’s like a blank a38 uh blank 737 those ones weird me out onea is confusing when they got

Different liy we saw a Naru Airlines 737 300 come out earlier with a bonser call sign oh you saw bonso I haven’t even seen it was a Nar Nar Airline 737 the go operating for bonso or something yeah also come from the go Coast oh okay excellent oh no it’s a different one

Sorry apparently those storms are over to warber at the moment yeah not surprised typically they come from that direction don’t they so it’s normal sort of procedure here with storms they seem to come in like a line from the West bit of a score line occasionally somebody’s starting flight

Training at unisa that’s where I used to work good luck what aircraft you fly there um they predominantly use the diamond uh da40 onto the da42 the twin aircraft um out of FTA there for unisa I think for a while there they also had the cesna

172s and Tob bagos for a little while as well diamonds are a pretty popular aircraft aren’t they for I think they’re great okay they’ve got cupers that’s what you need cup holders in autopilot they nice little new aircraft some of the uh old s have that

Shag carpet uh seat covers that worry me soon as you get into it going into your uniform Q 51 there here 737 departure first we’ll show that one so guys if you’re tuning in um special guest here Veronica she’s ATC here in Brisbane tower1 we were just

Talking about that Julia is here she’s just gone down to the coffee shop and grab some coffee she’ll be back very shortly do you know what you’re looking at at the moment or where you’d like to go1 pointing in the wrong direction we’re just looking at the uh the

Cloud sounds like they’re starting to think about where that WEA sitting on their departure pass just what you were saying before wasn’t it y interestingly enough they can’t turn that weather radar on until they’re on the runway that’s right it could do nasty things I suppose damaging piece of

Equipment yeah okay stand by one We’ll advise are you happy to depart on Su with an early transfer and then we can work it from there with possibly uh Northbound heading of some description I’ll just stand by I always enjoy seeing the A332 take off there he is down there so yeah

Veronica that’s bazer oh hello B oh he does look like a b he’s world famous um as far as I know I don’t think Brisbane Airport’s ever been Clos due to weather conditions maybe back in the day when um I think uh the water can get

Pretty high uh when it was just a one Runway but I think they’re always trying to improve that kind of stuff make sure that the water is draining appropriately and I know the aprons do tend of FL yeah there there can be a substantial amount of water that comes to the westwest below

The and cor 51 you copied 51 understood still happy with Straight Ahead cross 51 thank you initially depart on the wacko 3 said and once you’re probably I know four or 5 miles up wind they’ll probably cancel your seat I have said you don’t want to uh take that westbound track from

Overhead you prefer north of some description so you can expect that 01 rights cleared for takeoff departure rway 301 right take off real twisted around there we go qu 51 I 51 thank you contact departure see you 51 we saw one depart earlier had you could see the little

Streamers come off the winglet I think they’re there now there you go oh where wind is picking them up9 reest taxi doctors 49 you still with the Tower 2 40ies Craig Craig warts saying hi Julia I would uh love if Veronica would give me clearance to land for my Christmas break

We need to we need to ask ver Veronica to give you um clearance for that what do you think Veronica am I giving clearance to somebody yes uh clearance to land for my Christmas break absolutely I will I will approve that for sure there you go Craig

ATC amazing what a wonderful career navigation it’s just impressive um somebody’s asking for an update on the weather I can do that what do we got here yes our viewers are actually very concerned we’ve got that we might get really nasty weather at the moment we’ve got 10 km of visibility reducing

To 7 km in those showers that you’re looking at at the moment and um clouds just gone down to Broken 1,800 so it’s broken because it’s a bit of a ceiling the way that we’re looking out that way but when you look up on uh upwind it’s

Not too bad it’s scattered out that way and uh it actually looks pretty good to the east and the temperature is too SI so it’s quite humid um at the moment but it’s not too hot which you know if it drops too too low with the temperature we might get that

Hail yeah I ended um okay y I gave a good luck to Keith Graham whose uh son is about to start training ATA which is where I actually used to teach oh wow yeah such a small world any want see do that just I2 wind norly two knots rway

300 can 3 always like here in the ACC the Canadian accents my favorite as well got a few Canadian viewers there so definitely one of my favorite accents out there there’s also a few Irish uh really velocity pil uh Virgin Australia Pilots I should say I just get used to calling them velocity

Forof 3 yeah I think I prefer the new livery yeah over this one I don’t know this one gives me like a nice retro Vibe it looks cool but light it does actually yeah so this Runway here uh 01 ride is about what 3,500 M I think it is long uh

3,530 M and then uh your other Runway is 3,300 M which is why you might find um yeah the 01 left is wider though so when they built that one they built it um about 15 M wider than this one all right um which so sometimes you’ll hear some

Of the heavy aircraft want to take off on this Runway just for that extra length yep uh which is why you might see an aircraft take off on this Runway and go straight ahead rather than turn right cuz they’re on a different departure s bit of moisture Vapor there in theide the

Engine I do like it when it starts raining because you get to watch all the all the rain move on the runway behind the engines I love seeing that seeing how powerful these machines are starting to get some salt in the air 36 contact 118 so the the brisan 8 say

Your Canada area that you control how far out is that do you have like a defined space at all or is it just uh go to departures uh we work in conjunction with departures so everything we do we talk to them about um we typically look

Um look after 10 to 15 mil or so from the control tower itself um but everything we do we do in conjunction with uh departures and arrivals so it’s all a big team effort here and they are they downstairs below you they are below us in um in the

Building just below us and beside us um but we’ve got them on um sometimes you’ll hear us telling aircraft to stand by and it’s more than likely because we’re on a hotline and a hotline’s just uh we press a button and we’re openly talking to them downstairs so that we

Can discuss and negotiate and talk about what needs to be done um and just because we’re handing them off doesn’t mean we’re no longer there always help 03 heav Brisbane is that dynasty I think yeah I think Brisbane or the flight the flight information region isn’t it the fur

Whatever it’s called f yeah that’s covers what all the whole Australian is 11% or something isn’t it yeah 11% of Australian airspace is what Air Services looks after and it’s um you can look after look up the F it cuts Australia in half almost and you

Got the Melbourne F and the Brisbane F so so they this like Melbourne Center or Brisbane Center control Brisbane Center so we’ve got approach and departure for Brisbane down here but then we’ve also got approaching um departures for cans and that’s what I find interesting yeah

So so they they’re doing a lot of the a lot of the control area um all the onroad airspace for the northern part of Australia which is really awesome a lot of people working downstairs oh wow big storm is it yep big storm definitely inbound I

Just elected to park my car under cover today so that’s coming from the West so if it if it does get closer we’re obviously not going to stay we’ll back up and get on out of here they said uh large hail Stones were potential as well

Yeah and that like I guess Air Services Australian they may be looking at like is it called remote controlling they are looking at digital Towers in the future yeah um I think uh the Western Sydney is a potential for that one yeah and as well as um I think

They’re looking at a couple of not as busy AER drones initially see if um Tri yeah get it done nice and safely that’s the most important thing about it all and that’s effectively like sitting in a 360° uh room I guess with cameras like picture screens and I’m actually uh

Really Keen to see how it works um they’ve got I think it’s um in London London City they’ve got a remote airport that’s in operation uh it’s mostly business Jets and that sort of thing um the smaller airport in there that they do remotely which is really cool so

Somebody can do it and we just got to follow along in a safe Pace can hear some that’s what that noise is over there the I was trying over here I was looking around like where’s that noise coming from want some engine runs making quite the noise I can’t I

Can’t hear that from my tower I didn’t know that ah they they do sound good they actually are the are popular here for us anyway maybe I need to be outside a little bit more and listen to them3 wind don’t worry guys jul here amazing amazing show today it’s it’s so great to

Got a lot of people who are really interested in uh what you’re doing and uh could you tell us a typical day at work um yeah how it look like like you know what do you expect like on daily basis at your job as a a traffic

Controller so uh as I said I’ve only been here for about a year so I’m a rated controller who can work on um Tower and clearance delivery I haven’t been trained to do ground just yet um so I normally work about 8 8 to 10 hours a

Day depending if I need to stay a little bit longer because it’s busy but um on an average day I’ll come in and uh start working on Tower or clearance and we normally work 1 and a half to 2 hours on take a half hour break and get back into

It so we’re always refreshed and ready to go um and where we sit it might just differ on how busy the traffic is what we’re expecting that day and who we have in in the tower so I’m a um what we call a tower journeyman um that just means

That I can only do do Tower and clearance and but we also have ground Journeymen so they can um they normally tear ground Journeymen up with a tower journeyman that way we sort of make one whole controller there that can do everything in the tower together and could you tell us um like

You know um just your personal view talking about yourself what’s the most rewarding part of your job oh it’s definitely rewarding when um in these odd conditions like when we start getting weather or an aircraft needs help or anytime that we can help out a

Pilot is is a good day for me I’m I’m always there to help to be honest that’s my motto in life always there to help so um that’s the best part of my day anytime a pilot says thank you you know I I know that I’ve helped them get on

Their way and helped out all those passengers and help passed on the information to make sure everybody’s safe that’s my rewarding out of the job absolutely yeah and and you guys doing such an amazing job because we we have ATC um on our streams here and you guys

Are always very nice everyone is just so kind um you know greeting each other pilots and adcs um and today everyone saying Merry Christmas so just it’s just really really nice and um especially it’s such a busy time of year as well absolutely absolutely 183 1873 bris TG and

Um tell us Veronica what would be cuz I I know that some of our viewers would like to consider becoming a would consider becoming a air traffic control in the future um what’s the uh whole selection process is it is it very complicated or um how yeah at any different stages I

Suppose and um just just tell us maybe a little bit about the whole process absolutely so anybody that’s interested in doing uh air traffic control there’s two ways to get into air control uh traffic control and that’s through the military uh or the uh more common one is

Through Air Services Australia so best way to get all your info is to jump onto Air Services um website which has all of their Career Information um you know lots of great videos on our day in the life of that of thing and all the different types of jobs they have going

On oh yeah absolutely guys you should definitely look it up if you’re interested always taking interest as well so if they may not be hiring in one section always send in an application because you never know when that job’s going to come up and you want to put

Your name forward but you um once you go into the career side of thing on their website you can look into how to apply it has all the information there there’s lots of aptitude testing um a couple of interviews and then you have a full day of testing

Where you might go to Melbourne or you do it online and you do some more after TR testing interviews group interviews Y and it’s quite a long selection process but it’s long to make sure we get the right people in the absolutely yes definitely uh I can say you don’t actually need uh

Any Aviation background to become an air traffic controller as well okay so one of my classmates um were ran a restaurant um and she uh saw the ads for air traffic control and decided to give it a go and as it turns out she loves it

So we have people who have zero Aviation background airline pilots come and join traffic controll honestly doesn’t matter what kind of life you’re coming from anybody can join if you’ve got the uh the right ability and absolutely yeah pass all the aptitude testing personally encourage you guys if you’re

Interested um in doing that sort of job um should definitely uh look it up on um Air Services Australia abolutely yeah yes um and um are there any age restrictions for um traffic controllers like you definitely need to be over 18 right to

Apply but um 18 is it y I think so yeah um but you’re never too old right to become a a traffic controller if there’s any uh a lot of people decide that once they start getting over the age of 40 to 50 years old that they’re probably not

Looking to restart their career again in saying that we’ve had a couple of people um who have recently been very successful in training and they were late 30s so there’s no um I would say a huge age limit so much as to yeah would you want to do that in your life but

Yeah you just need to be 18 and willing to give it a go I think the most important thing about a Korean Aviation is commitment you know if you you just got to be committed to what you want to do there and really give it your all

Yeah that was actually my my next question uh to you Veronica what kind of person does it take um to be a a good air traffic controller air traffic controller definitely needs to be observant to be honest that’s our job uh yeah for me at least looking um

In the control tower we’re always looking we always want to see the odd thing uh so if something looks slightly different pointing that out to the pilot might actually you know save them a lot of trouble in the future um so always being observant always listening and then always being able to

Keep your cool Under Pressure passing information onto everybody and making sure that everybody knows what’s going on sometimes it’s all about painting the right picture of for everybody they got to be able to talk well and uh speak up when required uh but not speak too much don’t

Want to congest the radios but definitely need to be observant and committed to the job if you don’t love it it might be you know some of my family don’t enjoy watching planes take off day in day out all day I love it yeah yeah absolutely yeah Veronica is

Actually um dedicating here have free time just to come up here and and do some plane spotting um on Julia flight stream so um really thank you for that Veronica and while we were chatting here um about becoming air traffic controller um and what it takes to be a

Good air traffic controller we saw China Eastern taking off uh going back home to Shanghai that was flight 7 and it looks like he’s one of those departures who’s maintaining the runway track as well which is unusual but it happens 776 uh is it challenging to become a traffic

Controller I think you you partially uh answer that question I know it’s it’s a lot of dedication right and a commitment but as we said it’s really rewarding yeah you definitely need to have the right skills um uh that’s why there’s a lot of attitude testing there’s a lot of

Um memory skills a lot of general math things all the general math skills you need become a pilot can transfer over to becom an air traffic controller so there are some certain specific aspects that they’re looking for um and a certain personality as well got to be able to be

That little bit extroverted so that you can talk to everybody got to be obser and got to be intelligent to make sure that you’re looking at the numbers you know how you know if a plane is going to take off in that Gap appropriately and

Safely we got to be able to know these things how fast is that plane going and we learn these things um so you got to be able to learn well and quickly um and act quickly and effectively as well and um everyone we’re chatting here with Veronica air traffic controller

Mean by ground exactly yeah Craig wats is asking Veronica could you please explain what you mean by uh ground and what it involves um ground controllers um are looking after all the aircraft that are taxing so every time an aircraft requests for a push back they’re making sure that the uh apron

Behind them is clear they’re not going to run into anybody and then they’re also managing that flow of traffic making sure that two people aren’t going to push back at the one time um so they’re looking after all the aircraft on the apron and taxing all the way up

To the runway as well so from startup all the way to the whole point at the runway that’s um that’s ground controller’s job amazing I just wanted to say thank you everyone once again for all the birthday wishes I really appreciate it thank you so much so so nice of you guys

What what to focus on and you know in the early stage of their career or if they still in high school oh yeah if uh if you’re still in high school make sure that you’re concentrating on those really relevant subjects you know your mathematics skills science skills

Physics is a big one for Aviation and then just make sure that that’s something um you’re ke to get into your career it’s a long career um there’s always the option of doing bachelors in aviation along the way or you can do some Aviation study but you can also leave high school and

Apply for these jobs just make sure that you’re up to date with your y general math skills your physics skills make sure that you got good memory attention and um start playing games games are great actually for building those uh little memory skills and abilities to spot conflicts and that sort of thing

But if it’s something you’re interested get down to the airport start looking at planes that way you can show your enthusiasm when you start applying for these jobs as well and you can tell them how much you love it and how you’re going to be doing that for the rest of

We’ve got winds up to 18 knots now which isn’t too bad but um you can expect thunderstorms tomorrow as well yeah it’s go might be an interesting afternoon leading up to Christmas apparently it’s storming quite badly in the go Coast I believe that yeah looking down that direction it

Doesn’t look very nice at all definitely sounds like all of that weather’s down to the south at the moment so I guess you guys up in the tower and all that sort of be planning for this I guess like sort of like I guess working absolutely yeah to be honest I’m

One of those people that looks up uh the weather before I leave to go to work to see what’s in store but um so you’re a real sort of Av gu you I love weather definitely uh definitely AI absolutely it’s the first thing I check in the

Morning what’s work going to be like today and uh so you absolutely love your job don’t you that’s absolutely yeah and we pass all this information on to each other as we um swap in and swap out we make sure everybody’s we’re all on the same page we’re all ready to go um

Waiting for those thunderstorms to start coming in we have a radar uh we watched the bomb radar on our screens as well yeah and bomb is a bureau of meteorology isn’t it so it’s for international people watching you y the Bureau of meteorology always keeping us up to date

So that we can pass on all of the appropriate weather information to all the pilots as well they can only see so far with their weather radars and also you we have the Aus too don’t you so the automatic terminal information service yeah that’s that’s actually one of my jobs when I’m on

Clearance delivery I also update the uh the ATS the uh the aerodrome terminal information service so we observe we all have um uh we did we’ve all done a course with the Bureau of met to make sure that we can appropriately observe the weather uh so we update the wind the cloud base

The temperature the q& and uh obviously all of the other important departure information um at the moment they’ve got thunderstorms up on the weather on the as well the more information we can provide the better and how how often does does that change is what makes it

Change it changes as required so if um it the cloud base changes by more than 200 ft we’re going to update the weather uh if the temperature changes by 1° if the q& changes by 1 Hector pel um so we have a range of limitations

Where if these if they move out of those parameters we’re going to change um the weather information so it’s the most up to date so we might go through the whole alphabet except uh except for Zulu uh Zulu means that the tow is closed y so you won’t hear me putting

Arrivals Runway Z one right for departures wet wind 3 6 0° 1 8 Runway wet visibility km we passing the southern side at the moment so that’s the weather so we type in all that information the computer and then um and then the lovely electronic lady uh reads it out for us

You choose a voice oh no and sometimes we need to pre-listen just in case she says the wrong things and we put in the wrong uh acronyms to be honest sometimes uh and some of us are quite bad at spelling yeah sometimes we need to hand

Type sometimes we can put 01 R and she will read out the appropriate 01 right Runway uh it really depends where you’re typing um but somebody did ask me is an air traffic controller a really stressful job or is it just portrayed that way on TV that’s a good question

So uh it can be stressful um as you know like day in day out it’s it’s it can be very stock standard stuff um but other days um sometimes things happen and and we’re always prepared for that so we’re always looking outside uh waiting to see if anything happens make

Sure everybody’s aware of what’s going on uh it can be stressful but that’s why we work in a team as well well so Air Services is just a big uh family all working together so like I said we have our managers up there so as soon as one

Of uh somebody might be really busy on our position so the uh shift manager will come over see if we need any support any help maybe just look out to make sure everything’s going well um so we’re always supporting each other uh it would probably be portrayed a lot more

Stressful than it is as they’re capturing those uh those uh busy moments and all those scary dramatic moments and I think I last time we we met up I think I asked you did you watch the movie pushing tin yes did you end up did you end up watching it I actually

Didn’t I totally forgot about that but I have seen the movie Flying High and um oh it’s also called airplane it’s got two two names that one it’s an Aldi but it’s a great movie and they definitely don’t portray air traffic control as it is I think they use one of their radar

Screens as a washing machine in that movie so it’s not like that I promise uh we definitely have uh good equipment uh it can be stressful but um sometimes it can be can be slower days than others uh in thunderstorms it starts to slow down but it’s still

Really busy cuz um we’re still getting everybody moving just at a slower pace so do you have to have a certain spacing between arrivals sometimes sometimes when this weather comes in you might hear us um we might need extra spacing than we would normally do on a um on a good weather

Date so if somebody takes off and decides that they need to maneuver around weather more than likely everybody else behind them will too as well so we’ll slow down those that departure rate make sure everybody has ample room to move around safely and separated from each other appropriately

So um you might we might have to increase that separation standard from what we normally use purely all all safety stuff to be honest niika thank you for a $2 donation here on the stream much appreciated and um Nik is saying the a350s remind me of the hamburger

Help yeah it looks pretty bad you that way Whata a micr burst over the city you can definitely see it coming in from the West now we’re going to get hit by some showers very shortly yeah we carefully here um checking weather coming across top yeah if uh anybody out there is an

Aviation nerd like I am you’ll be looking at the radar right now and you can see um on Flight Radar 24 or any other Flight Tracker out there that some of the aircraft are actually in holding patterns um actually what is interesting is as soon as you can look this up on

The uh Brisbane Airport website as soon as we start getting lightning in the area if it’s within 5 and 10 nautical miles you’ll start seeing lights flashing around the aerodrome so if they’re white flashing lights we’ve had lightning strikes within 10 Nautica miles of the air drone and if it’s

Within 5 nautic miles will start getting blue lights so that’s when you can’t get your baggage handlers and people out on the apron uh purely for their safety yeah so that’s one there isn’t there you can see there on screen so that’s flashing white it’s flashing yep so

We’ve we’ve had the 10 nautical mile lightning strike in the area so it must be out to the West yeah so that definitely lets us know how close that thunderstorm is um coming as well it looks like it’s pouring down in the CBDs at Henry yeah definitely does when

You we look to the South oh yeah you can see that cloud base out there as well so that’s so we’re kind of right on the Northern edge of it I think so pretty well sheltered here looks like velocity 600’s trying to make an approach into 01 left at the moment he

Looks okay right now um still descending through 3,000 ft so we’ll see if he comes in onto the 01 left Runway looking at the um wind socks they look a bit he’s actually oh he’s aiming over to go to the right Runway okay well there you go some things are changing

Now now that that weather’s coming in he’s aiming for 01 right just and still got it nothing for you hopefully not too much longer looking at the radar looks like they’re bringing one um somebody asked me if I use that’s probably um I’m not sure what

That is so I’m going to say no that’s for the flat simulators you can do online virtual Air Traffic Control yeah for flat I have never used it we have um really great uh 360 and 270 Sims uh at the college that we use so we would do

Air traffic control in the simulator day in day out um in those ones there and then we would just practice with each other with our co-workers yeah that the Microsoft light simulat stuff is very interesting people take it very serious one of my friends has quite

The setup actually a few of my friends on weather 886 a supercell is capable of producing a tornado bit delay for you they’re still two from the with the diversions I can’t go before them so um you might have maybe 5 10 minutes to let

You know how it Go a potential Haz it is you can get water spouts over the water as well that happened a few uh a week ago I think um but you can see the real Angry Cloud on Final right now which um somebody’s somebody’s attempting to make it right now so we’ll

See how they go that far away we’ll see we’ll see um if we can see 100 um and virtual wife and kids are leaving town tomorrow afternoon on jet give them the best priority I can I’ll make sure everybody gets on the got gets on their flight on time so make

Sure you board on time as well yeah that wind has seemed to really died off that’s that’s the rain um rain wall hitting us from right I Reon and just keep you both in the loop at the holding Point um they’ve got two up at the moment hold and thanks for

Down oh wow little bumpy there w great landing by the pilot excellent job these pilots1 we can get you airb now canel and Rec a brisban 4 radar departure CL 6000 the bris radar departure 31 so I guess there could be a possibility of some tail

There yeah I can’t see a wind sock at the moment I suspect that it might be more than likely crosswind that’s a big issue at the moment the wind at the moment showing me 2 35 W 2 35 that is a headwind 235 that temperature Dr we’re going to

Get hail we’re going to get hail it just drops Wow look at that cloud beautiful there we go uh it’s very high chance of hail I reckon look at that cloud formation I so much how great does that look I mean awful but like how great it was definitely skilled pilot you know you kind of want a bit of a

Flat Landing when it comes to weather like this put it on the ground all three wheels on the ground is better than trying to do um your normal average Landing get the drag on the runway so the blue lights are on now blue lights we’ got lightning within 5

Miles wait till the storm passes curently got 2 1 this is what happens though when when the weather’s actually passing directly over the um airport you might get wind SS facing each other so you’re going to have wind facing every direction and look at that VIs Dro yeah

Down to the South there’s absolutely nothing look at that it does get a bit loud under here under rain so wow hear that right it’s just lightning strikes out here wow look at that probably see the rain on the camera coming over few lightning strikes in that General

Direction look at it it’s just coming down so heavy and that’s cold too it’s amazing how that changed it literally just drops like just instantly instantly 10° just goes down that’s how you know if you’re walking around and it’s heavily raining and the temperature drops look out for that

Ha I don’t think there’s any arrivals coming in or attempting are they so at this stage yeah they probably be looking at um telling Pilots that it’s probably not the best time to land uh looks like there’s a qink on Final for Runway 01 L well that

That would be interesting to see wait no he’s maintaining 4,000 ft actually so they might be in a m approach already yeah B is back baz is back in he’s Sheltering taking shelter he’s all safe and we’ve just got an update on the ATS there so your high intensity approach

And high intensity Runway lighting is now operating here’s an interesting one the wind they’ve got down is variable 30 knots oh wow so they can’t pick a direction it’s going everywhere right now um 4,000 M of Biz and showers temperatures 20 Z it lookss a

Bit less than 4,000 M I think anyways um to the South anyway yeah so it’s it’s on literally shivering now it’s cold yeah really heavy rain there’s that lightning so the planes also have a uh visibility requirement when they come in to land as well so they’ll need to be

To come in first or yeah so you’ll find that the first person in a holding pattern might be about 4,000 ft then they can stack they can stack them up on the on top of each other basically um separated by 1,000 to 2,000 ft and then they’ll drop down one by one

When it’s safe to do so so whoever’s at the bottom will start coming in first and so and also you know you could maybe get fuel problems with airplanes with holding and they fuel issue yeah they’re definitely going to make themselves number one that’s for
