In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don’t know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

Throughout my journey, I’m raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. All the money raised will go directly to helping Franek and his family lead as normal a life as possible so please donate generously: https://gogetfunding.com/arewethereyet/

None of that would be possible without my official sponsors:

Good morning! Last night, I stayed in Dawson City, but I didn’t go out last night this time because after my last visit here last week, you know what happened. I partied until late, so uh… I stayed in this motel. A hundred dollars per room. Without the bathroom. Bargain. Okay. So.

We’re going to Alaska today. We’ll be crossing the water to Alaska, but before that, we have to clean Chillie because look. This mud just sticks like this. And absolutely… You turn the light on. So yeah. This is the light on.

I cleaned the LED lights yesterday, so at least we had that on the way in. So that’s what Dempster Highway mud does to ya. Yeah. That’s roughly clear. But the – Yeah. That still needs cleaning. [Intro Music] Wow, you’ve never had such dirty lights in your life! I swear! A bit of water. Oh, look at you! You can see now! That’ll do. Indicators. They’re handy, too. That’ll do. Right? The rest can stay. Ah, hold on. Maybe we should do the rego, too. On… Her… Bike! How’s that? Perfect. So, yeah! To get to the other side, we need to catch a ferry. They’ll let you go on first. Yes! I just can go past? Oh, thank you! That’s so nice. Thank you! That was nice. Well hopefully, it won’t upset anyone. No worries! I want you to wait here ’til we load you. [Kinga] No problem. You’re actually right in the exit lane. Somehow, we’ll fit in. It’s us, Chillie! Good? We’re in! This ferry is fast! Woo! The fastest ferry I’ve been on. On this summer. And this is Yukon River!

This is so cool. Okay. We’re on the other side. Thank you! All right! And we’re on the other side. A hundred and five kilometers to the border. That’s it. Let’s do it. Oh wow, look. This road just goes like all the way at the top of the hill. I had no idea this road is gonna be so scenic. Sometimes it’s so good not to do research, and then, just things surprise you! As you go along. Well. I had no idea this Top of the World Highway is gravel. It’s a very hard compact gravel. Very easy to ride on. Pretty much just like paved road. But look at this. Look at this! We’re going through the top. Like honestly, this road just goes through the top of the hills. That’s why

It feels like we’re on the top of the world! That’s why the highway is called the Top of the World Highway. It all makes sense now. Okay! Let’s keep going! Okay. I stopped here because there’s a viewpoint. And this is what we see at the viewpoint. There you go. Very nice. So we’re at the highest peak, I think! This hill, it was thirteen – over thirteen… …hundred meters above the sea level.

And this is the border crossing. We can see it from here. Let’s go to the border now! Does this mean the… the gravel is finished? Maybe… Maybe it’s a paved road in the U.S. Very possible. Look at this. Straight away. Bang! Asphalt. And lines.

Okay! This is exciting! I’m crossing to Alaska. Yay! ‘You are in a different time zone.’ Thanks for letting me know. So this is how it looks like. Very small border crossing. Very remote in a beautiful area. Uh-huh. That’s us. Stop. Okay. That’s it. And we’re in! We’re in Alaska! Yay!

This is how it looks like. Just like on the other side in Canada, for now. Woohoo! Welcome to Alaska. Uh, the border crossing was super nice. The guys were super nice. This border crossing is only open for three months of the year, otherwise it’s closed. So just for the summer. So…

Yeah! They just like, check your passport and that’s it. You’re in. So good. And now we’re going to Chicken. Uh-huh. Chicken. ‘Welcome to Alaska.’ Oh my God, oh my God, we have to have a picture with this sign. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

Wrong way, but that’s okay. I don’t even know the wrong way. Maybe it’s both ways. It’s okay. Uh-huh. Uh-huh, uh-huh. And the sign is just here. Perfect. And we made it! We made it to Alaska! There you go! Well done, Chillie.

I’m just really showing her off because she’s so dirty. She looks so nice. You know, eventually this Dempster Highway dust will fall off. You’re looking great. You’re looking great. Welcome to Alaska, everyone. We made it! We didn’t die! Okay, it’s time to go to Chicken! Gravel again! I had no idea that we’re gonna… The road will turn into gravel again. This is so cool! I like! Chicken Community. That will be our first stop. Well, second one after the border. But the first town we’re gonna stop at… Everyone just said, ‘You have to stop at Chicken!’ Okay, well I will stop at Chicken and we’ll see what it’s about. Apparently they do have a town of Chicken. Next left.

Okay. Okay! I think this is it. Free camping! There you go. If we had time, we would camp here, but we don’t have the time. We’re a little bit on the run. What a super cute little town! Well, I’m not gonna have lunch. I’m gonna keep going, but I got a sticker. It says – Oh, sorry. Top of the World. Chicken, Alaska. That’s right! Good luck. We’ll place it later. Later. Later. Time to go, Chillie. Last, not least,

We have to have a picture with the chicken. The chicken himself. That’s it! This is the chicken. What’s kickin’, chicken? Bit of a chicken. Bye, chicken! Time to go. Well, we didn’t have lunch here. There was nothing for us.

So we’ll continue now for eighty miles. Oh my God, we’re back to the miles. Google is showing me everything in miles now. So… We’ll get to Tok? Took? Tuk? I don’t know how they say it. There is a motorcycle camp there. Let’s see if the road will be gravel or not gravel.

We’ll be fine if it was gravel, you know? It looks like it’s not gravel. Looks like it’s pavement. Whoa. Whoa! Look at this ho- Whoa! These holes, hey? Wow. I’ve never seen such a big… I wonder if it’s because of the… The road wasn’t…

I mean, the roadways wasn’t compacted properly or the material, so the… The weather, or everything together made it? But I reckon it’s just the base of the road was faulty. Looks like, yeah. I don’t know. I’m not gonna judge them. It’s interesting. Just saying. [Outro Music] It’s not paved road all the way, so… The corrugations. Right! So we had a little bit of asphalt and then we’ve got gravel again. Woohoo! How many? Fifty… Fifty-four miles. Aww… Poo. Poo. Asphalt again. I got so excited.

Oh well. It is what it is. I think we’re gonna be on asphalt for a while now. [Outro Music]

    1. Top of the World Highway was definitely a high point for my trip last year. The cracks/condition of the paved portion after Chicken appears to have gotten even worse! It is so nice seeing another perspective on the roads I enjoyed.

    2. Here in BC the ferries usually let the motorcycles on first, up front, so they can exit first and not get all the dust and stones flying… Please be careful zooming along remote roads, many wild animals can dash across without warning. Carry on your adventure Kinga!!

    3. Kinga, drapanie reflektorów i kierunkowskazów aż mnie zabolało!
Tam nie ma myjni, albo chociaż szlaucha na stacji? Aż czułem fizyczny ból podrapania 😮
      Biedna Chilli…

    4. I was concerned when you were scraping your headlights, not a good idea. Probably no jet wash facility that far North eh ? All that muck in you rad won't do much good either? Awesome area though. Happy, healthy Christmas Kinga and another exciting New Year to you. Safe riding.😊

    5. That pavement damage on the road at the 14 minute mark is typical of the damage frost and freeze thaw cycles can do to any road surface and it is why many northern roads are gravel as they can be smoothed out and leveled with the pass of a plow……………………..for another look at how ice can push things around – have a look at a typical Arctic Pingo which is a dome of ice that may be up to 165 feet high………………………

    6. Good advice for someone following in your footstep.

After a particularly warm thaw, Canada's most northern railway was in jeopardy of abandonment. It serves communities along the way and also a grain port at Hudson's Bay.

    7. Have you got Chillie booked in for a full service and new tyres on your way back to "civilisation"? Just proves how good the GS is to all the GS deniers.
