The nightly news with Mitri Sirin. Good evening, everyone. Kristin has tonight’s sporting news. Yes. A winter sports highlight. Good evening. Our topics at a glance, starting with a prickly visit. A controversial guest in Berlin: Federal President Steinmeier and Chancellor Scholz received Turkish President Erdoǧan.

Parental benefits, VAT, student aid: The government continues to fine-tune the budget. After Wednesday’s court ruling, everything is subject to change. A US pharmaceutical giant invests billions in Rhineland-Palatinate: The state is on its way to becoming a leading site for biotechnology. Turkish President Erdoǧan will have dinner with the chancellor in a few minutes.

There was a memorable press conference beforehand. It is the most controversial visit in a long time, as Erdoǧan has described Israel as a terrorist state and Hamas as a liberation organisation. Although the chancellor has already rejected this as absurd, many still expect a clear distancing.

But it’s a diplomatic ride on the razor’s edge because Berlin also needs Ankara as a strategic partner. Britta Spiekermann reports. The mood was visibly tense. No smiles as Federal President Steinmeier received controversial guest Erdoǧan. A bare minimum as far as protocol goes. Things didn’t improve when Erdoǧan signed the Golden Book:

A signature, and nothing more. Not a look, not a gesture. It was a low point. The Turkish president’s verbal attacks, made earlier in Ankara’s parliament, claiming that Israel is a terrorist state and Hamas a liberation organization, were just too fierce. They were met with horror in Germany.

Today, there was an attempt at dialogue in spite of the political climate and their differences. The red carpet was rolled out for the autocrat. Scholz expended a smile, which did not stop him from using firm words: We see Israel’s right to exist as irrefutable.

Let me say just as clearly: There is no place for antisemitism in our country. Let’s try to ensure a humanitarian ceasefire together. Then we can save the region from this wildfire. Turkey is a strategically important NATO member, which still has close ties to Putin.

They also play a key role in migration: The EU-Turkey agreement of 2016 is to be revived. Germany needs Turkey, and economically ailing Turkey needs Germany. My feeling is the German government is sacrificing its values for interests. And Erdoǧan is setting the rules. Erdoǧan: an uneasy, unloved guest.

His departure is scheduled following tonight’s dinner talks. It’s difficult with him, but it’s probably not possible without him either. Let’s turn to Diana Zimmermann in Berlin, who followed Scholz and Erdoǧan’s press conference live until a few minutes ago. Diana, what positions did the two take? Both men clearly hammered in their stakes,

Which are at opposite ends of the discussion about the Middle East. Chancellor Scholz made it clear from the outset that for him, the aggression began on 7 October with the Hamas attack on the Israeli civilian population. He also made it clear that what is currently happening in Gaza concerns Israel’s right to self-defence.

The Turkish president spoke exclusively about the Palestinian victims. He presented himself as a cool head in the heated situation in the Middle East, an advantage he believes he has over the Germans. He has said quite clearly that, because of the Holocaust, Germany is not in a position to make objective judgements.

We also know that Turkey would like to buy 40 Eurofighter jets. This would require Germany’s approval. Towards the end of the press conference, a threatening tone crept into Erdoǧan’s speech when he said that aircraft could also be bought elsewhere. That seemed a bit unprovoked.

It’s a rather ominous start to the talks, which are only just beginning. At least they were both able to agree that they want to prevent an escalation of this conflict in the Middle East. Thank you for your assessment, Diana, live from Berlin. Following Wednesday’s ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court,

The German government is now short 60 billion euros. It wasn’t necessarily to be expected that the Budget Committee would already have so many resolutions on the table for planned new spending. But, after an all-night marathon session, this is exactly what happened. Included is an extension of the energy price brake

And, instead of cuts, more money for voluntary services. Alexandra Vacano reports on other measures in the works. From schnitzel to pasta to salad, dining out could become more expensive. The days of 7% VAT in the gastronomy sector are over and done with. The tax, which had been reduced during the pandemic,

Will now go back up to 19% from 1 January. Less drastic cuts are planned for parental benefits. The upper income threshold is being lowered, but after much criticism, this will happen in stages: The current 300,000 euro limit for couples will drop to 200,000 euros beginning on 1 April.

A year later, this will drop to 175,000 euros. University students can hope for more support from government aid next year. The Budget Committee has added an extra 150 million euros to the estimated 1.92 billion euros. An additional 1 billion euros have been allocated for unemployment benefits, bringing the total to 4.8 billion euros.

Benefits will increase for the more than five million adults and children on aid beginning in January. And the biggest surprise: a large pot set aside for Long Covid research: 100 million euros for adults and 50 million for children. The reason? Too little is known about the disease.

The opposition is fuming. They say the entire 2024 budget is dubious. The CDU/CSU is considering a lawsuit against another source of funding, which is being used for the electricity and gas price brakes. A threat that will further increase the pressure on the federal government. More from Ines Trams.

The Budget Committee wrangled over next year’s budget until half past four in the morning. But it’s all subject to change following the Constitutional Court’s ruling. Large posts were left off the docket. The final meeting won’t be held until next Thursday.

We didn’t find a resolution for any of the hottest irons in the fire. Those will have to be dealt with in the next session. The traffic light coalition is in agreement that the full 19% VAT rate should once again apply in the gastronomy sector next year. It’s one way to save.

Yet despite huge funding gaps, the coalition also wants to reverse planned cuts. We will continue to support psychosocial centres that engage in care for refugees. We will continue to support youth migration services. We have also set a focus on the issue of combating antisemitism and supporting Jewish life in Germany.

In light of the unclear situation and the threat of large financial gaps, the CDU/CSU is criticizing the additional expenditures and making its own calculations. Yesterday, the traffic light coalition took another swig from the bottle. Based on our calculations, we, or should I say, the traffic light coalition,

Determined 32.5 billion in additional expenditures yesterday. I seriously wonder how they intend to finance this? The CDU/CSU is currently considering another lawsuit. They have initiated a legal review of the WSF, the Economic Stabilisation Fund. The fund is set to finance the energy price brakes. Another area of uncertainty for the coalition.

The question is what we could still do with the WSF funds and how much of those funds are moveable, in light of the court ruling. An expert hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday at the request of the CDU/CSU.

It is meant to clarify how much the budget must be adapted following the ruling from Karlsruhe. No matter what happens, you can stay up to date on ZDFheute.de and now, on WhatsApp. Either scan the QR code displayed here or subscribe directly on WhatsApp.

All the important news, short and compact, with updates in the morning and evening. It appears that the Israeli military operation will indeed be extended to the south of the Gaza Strip. In an interview, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his regret about the many civilian casualties. This fact, and the relatives of the missing hostages,

Are increasing the pressure on Netanyahu. Henriette de Maizière reports. They have been on the road for four days now. The relatives of the hostages are walking about 70 kilometres from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. All the people of Israel are supporting us here. They are all supporting the liberation of the hostages.

We’re walking to support the families. It’s the least we can do. We hope that all those kidnapped come back soon. Meanwhile, the Israeli army continues to fight in the Gaza Strip. They provided images of weapons found in the now-occupied Al-Shifa hospital. The EU’s foreign affairs representative emphasised today in Ramallah

That a political solution is needed to break the cycle of violence. The European Union has strongly emphasised that what matters is how Israel exercises its right to defend itself. Israel must respect international humanitarian law and the principle of proportionality. Israeli air strikes continued unabated in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli Prime Minister acknowledged on US television that Israel must accept civilian casualties. We try to do the job in such a way that there are as few civilian casualties as possible. But unfortunately, we are not successful. The relatives of the hostages are expected in Jerusalem tomorrow.

They are going to the seat of government, demanding the immediate release of all the hostages. We go now to Michael Bewerunge in Tel Aviv. Michael, there are indications of an expansion of the operation in southern Gaza. At the same time, Hamas is still holding over 200 hostages. How are the two connected?

The signs of an expansion of the Israeli ground offensive to the south of Gaza are intensifying. The army says that Hamas has been largely crushed in the north of Gaza. Defence Minister Gallant has announced that the ground operation is now entering its second phase.

And in the south of Gaza, leaflets have been dropped for days calling on the population to leave the southeastern part of Gaza, right on the border with Israel. However, the release of the hostages is standing in the way. A concrete deal has been on the table for days.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has even said that he would be prepared to agree to a temporary ceasefire if it would allow the hostages to be released. But that deal is not on the table at the moment. That’s why the cabinet is discussing whether to wait longer to leave room for such a deal,

Or whether the momentum of the offensive so far should be used to push forward into the south. The decision is still up in the air. But I think it’s clear that the expansion of the ground offensive to the south is not too far off. Thank you for the assessment from Tel Aviv, Michael.

The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine is also causing death and suffering every day. Around 9,800 Ukrainian civilians have been killed so far, according to the United Nations, but there are no reliable figures on the number of soldiers killed. Countless victims are being buried without anyone knowing who they are.

Forensic experts are trying to restore their identities. This is difficult, but very important work. Because it gives relatives certainty and allows them to say goodbye. Dara Hassanzadeh reports. Oxana searched for her husband for months. He had gone missing in action.

It was a DNA comparison with her daughter that finally led to the father’s grave. He had fallen only 40 kilometres away. When I arrived at the mass grave, I couldn’t find my way around. I didn’t know where to go, where to look. There were so many of them.

The Kharkiv police still has to identify over 1,900 nameless corpses. Many soldiers, but also civilian victims from Russian air strikes, are often disfigured beyond recognition. When we consider the condition of many corpses after an air raid, it is terrible.

On site, we take a DNA sample from each body part in order to reconstitute the corpse as far as possible. Just one airstrike last month with 59 dead had required more than 3,000 DNA samples because in some cases, dozens of body parts had to be placed back together.

This would be impossible without modern DNA technology from the USA. In our work, we try above all to remember that we are helping the relatives with our analyses. We help by determining the identities of missing persons. Oxana said that grieving the end of uncertainty at her husband’s grave with her daughter

Is the only way she can ever find peace. Now an attention-grabbing piece of news from the business world. The US pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly wants to expand in Germany. The company is planning a new plant in Alzey in Rhineland-Palatinate, and, unlike other companies, is doing so without any German taxpayers’ money.

Among other things, Eli Lilly produces a diabetes drug that is also approved as a slimming injection in the USA. Anti-obesity drugs are currently experiencing a real boom. Anselm Stern reports. Large-scale construction is soon to begin in the little town of Alzey in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The US pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is investing a total of 2.3 billion euros here. The plan is for a new high-tech plant to create up to 1,000 jobs, primarily for engineers and researchers, by 2027. The decision has been made in favour of Germany and Alzey in particular

Due to the excellent infrastructure that we found here and the highly-trained skilled workers. The good news for Germany was announced at two press conferences in Alzey and in Berlin. Two federal ministers were present, who are particularly pleased about the fact that Eli Lilly is not receiving any subsidies,

I.e. is investing in Germany without German taxpayers’ money. These are really business decisions that were not attracted by money, but by the advantages of the location. Germany is a very good location for pharmaceuticals. The dismissals of Germany in this area are simply not correct.

We have a strong pharmaceutical industry, and we benefit from additional investment. Eli Lilly, the world’s most valuable listed healthcare group, wants to produce its diabetes drug in Germany in the future. This is also approved in the USA as a so-called weight loss injection. The US company now wants to obtain approval in Europe

For the highly controversial and expensive rapid fat loss injection. The pharmaceutical giant is hoping to make huge new profits. Germany and Turkey. Today it’s political, and tomorrow it’s sport. Yes, a special game in a special place. 17,000 tickets have sold out Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.

It’s the kind of crowd expected for the final of the European Championship at home. A win against the Turkish guests could therefore be just the right motivational boost in the capital. The team arrived in Berlin this afternoon.

A heightened security level is in place at the team hotel ahead of the game against Turkey. At this World Cup test run, the German team must surprisingly play without Marc-André ter Stegen, who is out due to back problems. Julian Nagelsmann’s home debut in the sold-out Olympic Stadium will also test the mood.

Emotions are part of it, a certain volume is a part of it. We’re also looking forward to a lot of noise from both fan camps, with both the Turkish and German fans shouting loudly, making noise. But all sportsmanlike and fair. Nagelsmann has not yet decided who will be in goal against Turkey.

Kevin Trapp has the best chance of being called upon. The new winter season in skeleton began in China with a double success for the Germans. Tina Hermann was the fastest in the women’s event, while her teammate and Olympic champion Christopher Grotheer dominated the men’s competition in the 2022 Olympic ice track

Ahead of Chinese competitor Chen. The German bobsledders also made a promising start to the World Cup. Former champion Johannes Lochner raced to the best time in the two-man event with pusher Georg Fleischhauer. Second place went to Francesco Friedrich and Alexander Schüller. It’s Lochner’s seventh win in a row over multiple seasons.

Now to tennis. Alexander Zverev lost his chance to reach the ATP semifinals in Turin. Carlos Alcaraz from Spain secured the last place in the final round by beating Russian Daniil Medvedev in two sets, ending Zverev’s dream of a third triumph at the end of the season. His last match tonight is pointless.

That’s how it goes sometimes. Thanks, Kristin. So, being just eight years old and having a date with law enforcement doesn’t have to be a bad thing, at least not today, on National Reading Aloud Day. On this day, as many adults as possible try to interest as many children as possible in reading.

Class 2b from the Leibniz School in Mainz was invited into the police headquarters. Officers Reck and Magdeburg read aloud. “Oh yes, of course!” Mrs Klein just nodded. As befits their profession, they read a children’s detective story. Lovely. The weather is coming right up with Christa Orben.

The “heute journal” is at 10 PM as usual, today with Christian Sievers. That’s all from us. Barbara Hahlweg will be here tomorrow. Thanks for watching, and have a good start to the weekend. WEATHER REPORT Good evening. Many sensitive plants will need frost protection tonight, because this intermediate high combined with the departing low

Is causing our weather to get more cold. But that will be over by tomorrow afternoon, and a warm front with rain and very mild air will reach us again. But not yet tonight. Temperatures will drop to between 0 and 4 degrees,

With possible frost at minus 3 degrees between the North Sea and Bavarian Forest and in the Alps. It may be icy in places, with dense fog in some locations. In the south, initially also in the southwest, it will rain and snow will fall above 700 metres.

The scattered showers in the east of the country will ease quickly tomorrow morning, and it will also become drier and drier in the eastern Alps. The day will start with variable cloud cover. In the afternoon, heavy rain will arrive from the west with a strong southerly wind.

Under the rain clouds, temperatures will be between 7 and 10 degrees, with 4 to 7 degrees in the mountains and the east. It will be much milder on Sunday from the southwest with showers of up to 15 degrees, isolated thunderstorms in the east, and heavier rain with only 8 degrees.

On Monday and Tuesday, a lot of rain and gloom. And on Wednesday, it will get really chilly with only 0 to 7 degrees. Good night.

SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN!

Sie schützen also wiedereinmal diesen korrupten, diktatorischen Staat.
