HARROGATE PARISH #9: RIPLEY

The last episode in Harrogate before the big bloke in the red suit squeezes his way down the chimney brings us to Ripley, one of the borough’s biggest and most well known tourist hotspots. Even though it has a town hall, Ripley is not a town. It’s a small village just off the A61, North of the River Nidd at Killinghall. Its name is Old English and literally means the wood or clearing of the Hyrpe or Ripon people.

Famous for more than a few things, this little village’s biggest attraction is Ripley Castle. Dating from the 14th century, it has been the home of the Ingibly family for more than 700 years – and it continues to be so today. Its currently owned by Sir Thomas Ingilby. The castle has a priest hole and is open for public tours. The landscaped grounds and ornamental lakes are also open to the public. Ripley has 57 listed buildings – which is a crazy number given how small this place is. It would be easier to tell what’s not listed in truth! At lot of them are 19th century or later though, because the Ingilbys tore down the old village, and remodelled it after an Alsatian village. That’s why Ripley Town Hall is designed in the style of a French hotel de ville.

So, its Yorkshire’s very own bit of France, just a couple of miles away from Harrogate. In 2017, Ripley was named number 17 of the top 20 Best Villages in Britain to live in. It was one of only two in the North of England. Let’s see why it made the cut.

Hello my name is Andy and I Am The Village Idiot I’m armed with a car and a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands I’m using that time to attempt to visit every civil Parish in England you’re watching the Harriet series Harriet is a large burough one of the 11

Districts of North Yorkshire it’s got 139 civil parishes which one are we in in this episode welcome back to Harriet for the last time this year and to a place that a lot of you if you live in Harriet I’m sure will have visited at some point in

Your lives I’m going to spend an hour or so in the Glorious October evening sunshine walking around a place with a very famous castle welcome to Ripley Here’s my disclaimer for people who may be watching me for the first time I say things as I would in my native accent and dialect as a result I may not pronounce things in the same way as the locals do remember I’m a visitor it’s impossible to know everything leave me a

Comment spin me a like and Bash that subscribe button let’s get to today’s Parish video the last episode in Harriet before the big bloke in the red suit squeezes his way down the chimney brings us to Ripley one of the bur’s biggest and most well-known tourist hotspots

Even though it has a town hall Ripley is not a town it’s a small village just off the a61 north of the river nid at killing Hall its name is Old English and literally means the wood or clearing of the RP or riing people famous for more

Than just a few things this little Village’s biggest attraction is Ripley Castle dating from The 14th Century it’s been the home of the engelby family for more than 700 years and it continues to be so today it’s currently owned by Sir Thomas ingleby the castle has a priest

Hole and it’s open for Public tours the landscape grounds and ornamental Lakes are also open to the public Ripley has 57 listed buildings which is a crazy number given how small this place is it would be easier to tell you what’s not listed in truth a lot of them are 19th

Century or later though because the inle bees tore down the old village and remodel it after an alaan Village that’s why Ripley town hall is designed in the style of a French Hotel devil so it’s yorkshire’s very own bit of France just a couple of miles away from Harriet in

2017 Ripley was named number 17 of the top 20 best villages in Britain to live in it was one of only two in the north of England let’s see why it made the Cut We begin in Ripley’s public car park located to the south of the main village cluster here’s a map showing you the whole village Ripley is certainly not the biggest place in Harriet but it’s got to be up there with the most historically important most of it was built in the

19th century after the ingleby family owners for 700 years plus tore down the old village the castle might be the main attraction but there are plenty of local businesses here one of them is the popular Castle meat butcher shop formerly Hutchinson’s this was recently voted as the best butchers in

Yorkshire at the annual Yorkshire retail business Awards speaking of successful businesses it was here in 1834 that Quintin Acom founded the first ever company to make hampers named Ripley hampers they contain luxury items such as champagne and smoked salmon and they’re as popular today as they were back

Then they’re part of the Ripley group of companies which includes the old-fashioned Ripley store often described as an Aladdin’s cave the world famous Ripley ice cream company can be found alongside the shop this alone is worth stopping by for the B’s head is the the only Pub in

The village when we hit the church in a moment the reason behind its name will become clear now in front of the pub you haven’t just got one cross you’ve got two here’s the first one and you can see the other one directly behind it let’s talk about

These next and then we’ll head across to the church which is just the way to the left this first cross on a five-step base is of the market variety it’s 17th century and has a Sund dial and a set of stocks for close company the second is the war memorial a

Pointed Stone which has names from both world wars this one includes both men and women now we’ve hopped over the road to All Saints Church this is the second oldest building that remains in Ripley today behind only the castle built in the 14th century this replaced a former Chapel which stood

Half a mile to the South which had some issues with subsidence that fact would earn it the nickname the sinking Chapel stones from it were reused in the building of this current structure the porch is a memorial to Ripley hamper founder Quintin Acom it was erected in 1863 a year after his

Death once a simple building this one has been added to several times the first major change was in 1567 when the tower was heightened here’s the East window on the East wall there’s bullet holes where royalist prisoners were shot by cromwell’s men during the Civil War now we’re in the beautiful chancel

Check out this amazing panel Victorian ceiling decorated with floral and leaf patterns soon enough we’re finding the inle bees this is the tomb of s Thomas ingleby which was originally in the sinking Chapel he was kned by Edward III for saving his life after he was attacked by a wild

Boar and that explains the Pub’s name there are far too many tablets and features on the walls to list them all so here’s the role of Honor on the South Wall of the Nave okay once out of the church you’re then faced with this I’m pretty sure a

Lot of people are very familiar with the building that is right in front of us here that’s Ripley Castle easily easily the biggest and most well-known landmark in this place let’s go and talk about it and see what it can tell us Ripley Castle is the oldest building

In the village built in the 14th century this has been the engleby home for over 700 years still privately owned today by the sixth engleby baronette and his wife lady ingleby it is however open to the public for guided tours its grounds and its Associated Parkland open to the public too you can

Follow this Bridal way which runs behind the castle to a big lake the castle is built of gritstone and ashar and has a central block flanked by a tower and a gate house which stands to the south of the main building in 2021 Ripley Castle was one

Of the 142 sites across England to receive part of the Govern govern’s culture Recovery Fund with this being October the castle is closed it opens at Easter and stays so for tours throughout the summer between 10: a.m. and 400 p.m. after the battle of Master Moore in

1644 Oliver Cromwell came here in search of Sir William ingleby who was hiding in its priest hole it’s had a few TV appearances for example children’s series The Flaxton boys used Ripley Castle as the fictional Flaxton Hall it was also used in the 1976 Disney

Film Escape From the dark as the home of Lord Harriet played by Scottish actor aliser Sim and for the Paranormal lovers the castle is also supposedly haunted by a mischievous Poltergeist who has a habit of making things disappear okay so once through the castle you can walk all the way through

It you’re then on a road which takes you back towards the center of the village when we reach the center of the village we’re going to take a right turn and finish off the main street before looping round onto a back street towards the a61 the Northern end of Main Street

Takes us past a row of houses known as Town Hall Cottages these are next to the town hall when the Engle bees demolished most of the village in the 19th century apart from the church and the castle it was remodeled on an alaan Village Ripley Town Hall therefore was built in

The style of a French Hotel devil it’s often used now as a venue for live music having been to France myself I can say the whole village does have a certain French feel about it thanks to its design there are British standards though like the empty red Pham box and a

George V 6 pillar box I found close to the town hall on the other side of the road is the finally Ripley endowed C of primary school rebuilt in 1830 with the rest of the village it was originally built in 1702 by Mary engelby and endowed with the

Fortune of her sister Katherine they were Sir William engel’s daughters next door is a gin Distillery Harriet Tipple relocated here in 2018 after negotiations with the castle owner S Thomas ingleby almost back at the B’s head we find the Chantry house Gallery established in 198 this showcases a wealth of Northern

Artists and nearby is the bus shelter which has a parish notice board ticket off guys Ripley is served by the way by the number 36 bus for a small place there’s a lot here isn’t there and you know what I think this time of day is

Actually a really good time to come and visit Ripley to appreciate it all because you haven’t got the the massive crowds around you know who are looking at everything you’re on your own virtually because a lot of people have gone home at this point so you can appreciate it more okay let’s continue

Then past the fizzy Fox which you can see there the road bends to the left and this will take us back towards the roundabout on the a61 okay we W through okay Orchard Lane is like Ripley’s back street fizzy Fox which we passed a moment ago is a home interior and clothing

Boutique Orchard Lane is mostly residential I wouldn’t like to suggest the average house price here but it’s got to be like a telephone number at the end of the lane is a small playground with a lot of modern equipment like swings and climbing frames for the local

Children it brings us to a wooded area which flanks the entrance to the village now let’s hit the a61 which bypasses The Village to the east there’s not much down here apart from Birchwood Farm on the left it’s a livestock Farm which produces local meat at the roundabout just afterwards

We turn right as we join the nadale greenway cycle path which ends in Ripley car park by the way the car park isn’t free it used to be but now for a 2hour visit to Ripley it’ll rust you £120 to Parky car Ripley Cricket Club is located just

Behind the car park guess what league they play in go on you’ll never get it okay we’re back to the beginning here in the car park in Ripley that’s a brilliant little place isn’t it well worth coming to visit I’ve just got one more thing to show you here in the last

Vestages of light if it holds out for another 10 minutes and that is a bridge over a river let’s go and find it this is killing Hall Bridge it was built in the 1950s to carry the a61 across the river nid replacing an old bridge in the

Process here’s the nid this is actually the first time we’ve seen it this spot used to be a popular location for many local artists the nid is the boundary between killing Hall and Ripley a fact that’s backed up by these old signs on the old bridge the old bridge was built in the

17th century and still carries an active road this now leads to the former killing Hall Quarry The ndale Greenway runs close to this spot too because it follows the route of the former nid Valley Railway line Ripley Valley Station was on the other side of the a61 for a short time

It was named Ripley Castle it closed in 1951 and that’s been Ripley folks time to head back over the nid via the new bridge and back to killing hall or most in the dark do join me again next year when the Harriet series continues we’ve

Still got 130 to go up here and if these have been any indication of what’s to come well I can’t wait for 2024 Merry Christmas Harriet Thanks for watching this video folks don’t forget to like this episode if you haven’t already it really makes a difference with YouTube if you’re new here subscribe to the channel for more videos like this and give us a share too if you’ve got friends who’d like it you
