Next we have an update on the Chris FR bike position story which we covered last week maybe two weeks ago if you missed it Chris FR recently discovered that his bike position on his team Factor bike was off by 3 cm a couple of Pros have since called him out as
Talking crap and making excuses for poor performances this week his team boss even questioned The credibility of his claims Silvan Adams uh is in charge of his team and said does it sound log I that someone who won seven grand Tours is claiming that his saddle position is
Off by a centimeter or whatever he’s saying does it sound credible for a guy who’s getting dropped not even on the last climbs of races but on the early climbs of races he also said we’ve been very generous with Chris in terms of trying to help him trying to give him
The best possible equipment the best possible conditions he can talk about his bike position until the cows come home that’s still not going to earn him a position on a grand tour team Savage this is the guy he’s not um he’s not the DS of the team he’s the money
Behind the team so I don’t know how involved he is how often he actually interacts with the with the riders that is pretty nasty yeah that’s very rude uh presumably from his point of view he’s going I’ve spent a lot of money where’s my return um which I guess happens to a
Lot of sports people it’s it’s you know I get what’s unique I guess about sports teams is that it’s not like working in just like a normal job even if you’re really highly paid because there’s like HR and stuff whereas in sports it seems people just you go like oh this person’s
Not performance so just sack him get rid of them yeah and that seems Bonkers doesn’t it well you know you know someone’s not performing they’re not performing but it doesn’t feel appropriate just to go boot them out see you later not interested in you anymore
So we had an email after we talked about Chris room a week or two weeks ago I still can’t remember uh from a guy called Ari who is actually friends with Chris FR and Emily did some digging to to confirm that he actually is friends
Friends of Chris F and he is and Ari said he was with FR when he discover discovered the position was off and he was pretty upset of some of the comments made in the media this week he wrote I’ve watched a couple of videos this is the actual email I’ve watched a couple
Of videos around this story and it hurts it hurts because I’m close to Chris and I was also with him when he real ized that there was a serious discrepancy between his new bike and his old pinell I I just want to add at this point I
What that says to me is Chris FR must have just had complete confidence that what he was given was correct so he didn’t even think to like question it or query it he’s just gone well these are professionals cool there’s my bike excellent they know what they’re doing
As you would if you were if you joined the pro yeah like if I would somehow ended up on a pro team I would assume the bike they’d give me would be correct well you’re going to next season aren’t you with all your blood doping he says I
Really enjoyed your podcast as you actually discuss the topic and question not just him but his team his mechanics and the World Tour cycling issues related to bike fitting it’s a thing although it may almost sound unbelievable and very unprofessional this did actually happen and that he took the correct measurements to correct
His position only a couple of days after realizing that many of these Sports podcasts out there find it easy to look down on him unfortunately the story is legit let’s now hope Chris proves people wrong in the coming season I hope so too I’ll be honest I don’t think it matters
If he proves people wrong or not realistically he’s in the Twilight of his career he’s identified some issues and he’s tried to rectify them and that’s what people should and do do so um it seems that he’s just in this really awkward position doesn’t it he’s
Being one of the the best cyclists in the world he’s ended up in a different team he isn’t performing as well as he had has done previously for whatever reason it doesn’t matter and people are struggling to deal with that I think the reason does matter the crash is the was
The big moment that really messed him up I forgot he it took ages to and like a serious crash it’s a serious crash broken bones and not only is that physical thing that’s a mental thing as well like it it stops you from being as
Confident and in a race a tiny tiny lack of confidence can then be magnified by you know if you miss a move or you hesitate and don’t go with a move because of some something that’s happening on the road which seems a bit sketch and you miss it and then that
Suddenly becomes a hours time Gap so I can see why these these things happen that is a very good point I I do distinctly remember so I I had a a nasty crash where my chain came off on a single speed and I like I I basically couldn’t walk properly for about three
Or 4 weeks and then I started riding bikes again and I had this paranoia about being out of the saddle for about 18 months I couldn’t Sprint out of the saddle which do you think your Chain’s going to snap CU I was like well if I’m in my saddle and my
Chain snaps and my chain comes off it doesn’t matter I’m in the saddle um if I was a professional racer that would be me done yeah yeah that would have been that would have been game over uh so that yeah that must have a huge huge impact on you know especially when you
Get into the you’ve proved a lot you’ve achieved as much as you possibly can achieve in in in the sport at the top level and then you go well maybe you just you know you lose you lose your head that’s it losing your head I want
Him to do well purely from my own interactions with him I met him outside a cafe in Ripley where it is 2012 must have been 2012 Olympics uh and he was there with like uh Bernie isil Mark Cavendish and they were the nicest very accommodating to fans I was like 17 and
Like proper handshake and they really took the time and Chris rooms rate was super nice in my one interaction with him I actually don’t care if he does well or doesn’t do well what I think is important is that people stop thinking they have the right to tell someone that they’re crap
Because they’re not doing as well as they have done previously when what you’ve done previously is been the best in the world yeah it’s weird isn’t it but but even if it isn’t the best in the world you you like it doesn’t matter if he’s doing amazing or not doing amazing
Now if he wants to ride at the highest level and someone wants to give him a ride then cool you know like leave him alone and I think this doesn’t just apply app apply to Chris room it’s it’s across the board we don’t have the right to tell people that they are just
Because we think they are and it is one of the problems with social media and why we don’t read comments it’s true if I can add to that Jimmy you said about his his crash because he basically had back pain and that’s what ultimately led
Him to realize that his fit was off but if you’ve had you know he was in intensive care with this crash if he’s then had problems getting back on the bike he might have thought that the pain he was suffering was a result of the injury rather than discrepancies with
His bike I also actually spoke to HRI this morning and another thing that he said was that FR took his team Sky mechanic from Team sky over to his new team and that was kind of his dedicated mechanic and you know you made it when you could do that it’s like Mark
Cavendish taking his uh his Oakley sponsorship with him wherever he goes I’m not going to wear the same glasses as his team sorry and not that I don’t think he’s blaming the mechanic at all but I think what you said Jimmy in the fact that he ultimately it was just
Assumed that someone had dealt with the position thing and ultimately everyone felt a bit embarrassed by the time they realized but hry was saying he was actually with him when it was sort of discovered and um he asked Chris if he was going to make it public about the
Fact that this had happened and he kind of at the time suggested that he might just keep it quiet um but obviously he’s decided not to for whatever reason but I mean maybe the guy just felt happy that you know he’d had a lord of back pain
And then suddenly felt better yeah but omry was a very nice guy and he was very um upset that everyone was being nasty to his M Chris room so we asked HRI to ask Chris if he’ll come and join us on the podcast as well didn’t we I did ask
That yes stay tuned next week special guest Chris room Chris room he did ask where we were based and I said um Newcastle UK and he said oh well Chris isn’t around there he knows him from the south of France I was like well it’s not
Quite the south of France but great time of year to visit here yeah exactly so yeah Chris room obviously you know you’re going to listen to this because it’s the 42nd biggest Sports podcast on Spotify so uh we look forward to seeing you on the show soon

Any close friend who is out cycling and sees a friend who has been doing something boneheadedly unbelievable for so long would say "Hey – WTF? How did you not figure this out sooner?"
My only thing with the bike setup, he's a professional athlete. I'd guess, these riders would notice something being off, let alone 3cm. I ride 600 hours a year as an amateur, these world tour guys are over 1000 hours easily, I'd feel 3cm. Muscle memory at that level has to be pretty accurate.
F1 drivers notice their cars being off. Golfers would feel a heavy vs light club. Basketball player would notice if you moved the rim.
I do hope though, he crushes it this season and we forget this all happened.
I like jimmys view on life
Apparently, Froome measured his reach from the nose of the saddle — he used to have a long-nosed one at Sky, but a short-nosed at the current team. Depending on the particular shape of the saddle the measurements change, which also explains his claim re saddle height. It was not nice of him to make his wrong conclusions public before talking to the team — and so the backlash is well deserved
I am very surprised that a pro would not feel the difference. I know more about ice hockey, the professionals and high end amateurs would know immediately if their skates, sticks or equipment were ill fitting or longer. I can feel the difference on a bike when I ride a different bike
Chris is done. End of. He and his friend needs to accept it. Period.
as long as you get millions for nothing, who cares ?
Love you guys but don’t be stupid…if you are a pro you check certain things and demand certain things…I can’t even place in a local race and can tell if my seat or bars are off even in the slightest…and if my power was off I would double check everything
How is it "rude" or "savage" to tell a rider that non-sense excuses won't win you a spot??? After spending years and fortunes developing Chris, presumably providing every training necessity, only to have him repay with this phony rubbish of an excuse… I'd say Chris is the one being rude and savage.
So I expect that now that the "position" is fixed he will win a grand tour?
If im paying you millions of dollars to perform and you’re not performing. I will call you crap and be upset. Don’t take my millions and act like I can’t criticize you.
I’m always surprised at the level of disrespect aimed at Chris Froome. He’s a 7 time Grand Tour winner and I suspect that those that are most critical of him have never won a damn thing.
3cm is a lot if you ride a long distance especially the pro. They need to deal with many stages. Try put 3mm off in ur cleat and ride more than 100km non stop, u'll feel the the pain after 60km. Imagine u need to do more than 10 stages in weeks. Those who said 3cm off is no big deal are those coffee rider. Try ride more than100km non stop, you know what i mean.
Chris, two words…”bike fit”! Even us amateurs can quickly identify if the fit and feel of a new bike does not feel correctly. There are websites which allow you to easily compare geometries. Two more words…”no excuses”!
They DON'T sack them – they will be under contract, so whatever contract time they have left has to be paid in full – plus extras for the inconvenience (?) of it all.
I do sympathize with pro cyclists as there aren't many on what I call A Living Wage Contract, and the majority are on 1 to 2 yr contracts. For example, in Athletics in the US, Katelyn Tuohy, a female middle distance prospect, (most of whom never get to the Public conscience) has just signed for Adidas – for $1M per yr. – how many cycling PROSPECTS get that? None.
At least she's not in the Music Industry – all that money would be taken out of sales – how many races would she have to win to do that?
And congrats on making the Top 50 –
I am guessing that the bike fit has been messing with Chris for a while but because he trusted his team he assumed it was all in his mind – logical given the crash – at least until he got the tape measure out.
Doesn't make me consider less of Chris, one of the greats of all time, has won all 3 GTs.
So he's telling me that he didn't look at his power numbers, didn't feel that shit wasn't right? Bullshit. It might even be WORSE that he wasn't lying about it. Now it just shows incompetence
Keeping people in check, love watching your videos bruv! Keep chillin. 😎
If you are off for 3 cm and never felt it off then you are not a professional cyclist. That sort of thing you feel it right away – 3cm is a huge difference almost for a mortal
I spent my whole life in sales, and the reason I loved it was because those with talent make money, and those without talent get canned. In too many occupations, you can ride the coattails of your colleagues and get paid the same as them. So I love the fact that sports is the same. Perform or get sacked. The difference is, and it's a huge difference that needs to change…athletes get paid their money first on the promise that they'll perform, or based on past performance. In sales you get paid this month for the work you did last month, and so on and so on. And they don't care how much money you made them last year or even last month, what are you doing for us this week…today?? Froome made his millions, and if you want my opinion, he pretty much got caught doping and when he had to give it up, he was just another guy in the peloton.
Kinda think this could be true as he was off the bike, after that big accident and major injuries throughout his body. He was off the bike a long time and coming back battered and beaten. Also moving onto new kit. Yadayada. This likely hid the issue and he also returned into the 2020 season which was all over the place. In the midst of all this, I don;t think it;s beyond the pale to suggest bike measurement discrepancies went unnoticed.
You clowns are leaving out the time and means of his recovery from his accident. What's wrong with you all? Also, see Bernard Hinault and his experience at the 1983 Vuelta. Why did Hinault leave Renault and miss the '83 TdF? LOL. "Ahh…I'd forgotten about that crash!" Derp.
Did Eddy Merckx assume everything was OK with his position? Maybe you kiddies should watch "Sunday in Hell" again? (or for your first time?) Maybe Chris Froome should watch it?
