The proprietors of a rural French farmhouse, where  British teenager Alex Batty resided during his   extended period missing abroad, have shared  insights into his time spent in their care.  In 2017, Alex departed from his Oldham  residence in Greater Manchester with his

Mother and grandfather for a holiday in Spain  but subsequently went missing. At the age of 17,   he returned to the UK on Saturday after  navigating the French Pyrenees alone for   several days to seek assistance. The owners of Gite de la Bastide,

Frederic Hambye, and Ingrid Beauve,  referred to Alex, known to them as Zach,   as an integral part of their family. It is  believed that he intermittently stayed at the   farmhouse over the past two years. French  authorities characterized the lifestyle   of Alex’s relatives as nomadic, traversing  from Morocco to Spain and then to France.

Situated in a small hamlet nestled in the Pyrenean  foothills, Gite de la Bastide is one of several   stone houses. The property owners disclosed  on their website that Alex engaged in various   tasks in exchange for food and lodging. They  recounted taking him on summer outings, such as

Cycling and trips to the beach and nearby river. Despite his mother not residing at the farmhouse,   Alex would leave to join her on several occasions.  The last time he returned to the gite was early in   the summer. Expressing a desire to “return to a  normal life,” Alex communicated his intention to

Enroll in a local French school to study computer  science. The owners attempted to assist him in   finding a place at a school but discovered that  he lacked the necessary official identification.  Subsequently, Alex informed them of his plan  to return to the UK to obtain the required

Identity documents for school enrollment.  When he departed, he expressed his gratitude,   with the owners assuring him that he would  always be welcome and that they would be there   to help if needed. They conveyed their  best wishes for his future endeavors.  Greater Manchester Police emphasized the need  to establish the circumstances surrounding

Alex’s disappearance before considering a  criminal investigation. Their priorities   include supporting Alex and his family and  facilitating his reintegration into society.   The location of Alex’s mother remains unknown,  with French prosecutors noting that he informed   them of her intention to take him to Finland,  prompting his decision to return to the UK.
