Debate show now and we’re kind of bringing it back to the present day after last week’s Venture into 20 2 and it’s a topic that well it’s it’s kind of in the moment in the now lot of questions being asked that is the form of melier been some heated debate

Amongst other content creators that we’ve uh we’ve seen out there very different angles the stats game versus the eye test and so much to to debate around it um it is Elan melier let’s first of all kind of delve in and just kind of set the scene uh if we can

Before we kind of get into the actual debate whether he’s actually good enough um but let’s talk about his impact when he first came into the team we signed him from lauen it was initially a season long loan and then when we got promoted into the Premier League that was then

Made permanent for about five million pounds um and really it took the position by storm we all remember his debut against Arsenal which I don’t think I’ve ever seen him better yeah that against ARS distribution saves everything was just absolutely incredible and we thought we’ve got a

Real talent on our hand um fast forward to the second year in the Premier League and the third year when we get relegated and it’s a little bit of a different picture um but kind of first of all before we delve into it I mean what’s kind of your thoughts on Melia overall

What what do you like about him and and how did he get to this position do you think it’s a real funny one is it with with Melia I feel really divided and a little bit split with him personally I think I think his career has kind of

Taken a similar trajectory to the to the spell of lead United from Bel Elsa coming in to where we are now um and you know I’d love to believe that the career act could take the same kind of spin that Pascal Striker maybe taken as an

Example um and but I would say so far this season he’s not really shown that complete transformation that I would want him to I do think there’s several factors which come into into the reasons as to why that is the case I think the journey that leag United have

Been on is is one of them the defense that he’s had in front of them is another his age I think there’s all sorts of different reasons the the goalkeeping coaching that we’ve had at the club and I think has played a huge

Part in that um and I I I find myself in a very tricky spot with Melia because I would argue 18 months ago two years ago it probably our most prized possession before rafin really kind of Hit the heights that he did and then went for

The money that he went for and Calvin had not really come through and proven himself to be the the England you know player of the year that he was melier really was probably our golden nugget we’d signed him for five million quid and he’ shown himself to actually be a really top

Goalkeeper um at Premier League League level especially the season behind closed doors um you know he was a he was a top top Premier League goalkeeper at such a young age he set the record for um most clean sheets for a keeper under the age of 21 I think it was if I

Remember rightly and and you know I always I think back to some of them spectacular saves that he made that season especially the one against Chef United away I don’t know if you remember it yeah unbelievable world class save like worthy of any highlight re worthy of any Top Class um

Goalkeeper but the I find myself thinking now with Melia that he’s a he’s a saver of some fantastic shots he still has got that in his locker I the save earlier on this season against Leicester he’s got that in his in his locker but his overall game has just regressed so

Much to the point now where I I find myself thinking with with the exception of the the left back problem that we’ve got I would actually say that he is the weakest part of this team I would say he’s the weakest link and I have no confidence that he’s Gonna Save shots on

A regular basis and the shots and I seem to do this with you on on the weekly that oh if that shot were at the at the other end I.E a shot that we’ve had at their keeper they save it if that were at the other end mellia won’t save it I

Seem to say it to myself constantly um and the IT test along with with the stats don’t make favorable reading for for melier it’s both now it’s and it’s taken a downwards trajectory constantly year and year and year since the first season in the Premier League yeah I it’s

It’s such a strange one because I think you’re absolutely spot on about him being our most valuable asset for a period of time I remember some astronomical phase being rumored for melier potentially leaving the club you know we’re talking tens of millions of pounds I think plus I think the the the

Wildest one I ever heard was about 70 million or something ridiculous Madrid were interested at one point Chelsea were interested like yeah yeah and it’s it’s a shame what’s happened since I I didn’t think it was a problem this season in so far as by the end of last

Year I thought this guy’s confidence is completely gone and I don’t know how it’s going to work going forward because I think the relationship between the crowd and him was strained as well I think that belief in him had vanished however I thought it was back

On track this this season and I felt that he was actually with strike regaining his position in the team but then when I thought about it a little bit more and with the benefit hindsight what’s he done this season I don’t actually know what he’s had to do

This season a lot of to be honest now bear in mind he is a ball playing goalkeeper in the sense that he’s comfortable with the ball at his feet he can carry the ball outside his box you know we’ve seen him nearly get up to the the halfway line sometimes you know

Driving forward is for me that’s probably his biggest asset at this point because I think you know we saw D in the cup and it wasn’t great you know with the ball at his feet it looked you know and a farer system it feels like that

Could just break down if you haven’t got that keeper that’s comfortable with the ball at his feet but you know I’m trying to I’m scratching my head going what else has he brought this season um and I think little by little the the cracks have started now I could be wrong

Here but I was looking at the goals we conceded in probably the last five or six games pretty much since the Rother room game I think that’s when people start to go right what what’s going on here and and just if we remind ourselves of those goals so the rotheram goal it’s

Near post he post and it’s like oh and when you watch it again it’s not that hard of a shot it’s you know it’s just PA and you’re thinking okay fine you know you’ve got one of them in you I don’t recall him meing blunders who the

First part of the Season you know first 15 games I don’t recall really looking at Mel and going that’s a problem however from that point against Swansea gets lobbed and it’s like yeah he’s off his line but it’s it’s a great finish Middlesboro the two goals arguably you

Can say I mean that the first one he gets beaten near post again potentially uncited possibly I don’t know it’s near post again their second goal it’s from a corner and the big issue with Melia at the moment is lack of command in the Box yeah and that middlesburg second goal

You know he nowhere near it and then Sunderland is hovering on the line doesn’t command the Box he’s not aggressive enough going to get the ball and it feels a little bit delayed and then um comment with com com and goals so similar yeah that’s the last one you

Know he too far back against for that cry one and it’s like where’s where’s the commanding presson I mean obviously in between that he has pulled off an unbelievably worldly save against Leicester um there was another one wasn’t there against middles bro Coventry I can’t remember cry cry wasn’t

It no sorry Sunderland Sunderland yeah he’s pulled up fantastic saves and like you say he’s still capable yeah of producing that however this is just happening more and more and it kind of reached a fever fever pitch probably about three three uh games ago when I think you had Luke

From uh one of the fan channels and then you had gab who was on one Le Channel and they kind of had very opposite ends of the spectrum um I mean I’m going to bring this graphic on screen now so this is keep a performance this is the safe

Percentage and leads are in the bottom for 64.4% of saves now it’s only I mean it’s made 39 saves there 64% percentage it’s in the bottom for Lester’s goalkeepers top could that be the difference between the the gapping points I mean obviously not that alone but how much of an impact

Is that that having we have to have an outlier with that because also down there at the bottom is West in the top on well so West BR a bottom who were also in the top six and Southampton are in the bottom four who were also in the

Top six and it switch by the way full disclosure just one above West Brom as well yeah so so to be some outliers to this in that it the more shots you H sorry the more successful the team that you play for the likelihood is that

You’re going to face more shots and it does tend to then follow a pattern that the they then tend to be a little bit more clinical against you so you end up conceding more goals from less shots so I I I get that and it’s why stats can’t

Be just taken as the out andout outlier of of an argument that along with the eye test for me it always feels like Millie is never going to win as a game and take the Leicester game aside that’s one save yeah it it feels so often that

Unless it’s right at him the ball goes in the net like so he’s he’s made 39 saves out of 59 shots but then 39 that he saved with the exception of one or two they are right at him they are saves that I would expect him to make they’re

Not Wonder saves I mean the comment there from John I just think is mindblowing that argument was fair last season and the season before I agree with you 100% John but this season I would argue that our defense the center back two the ones that play out and out

Every week I would have them over any other two center backs in the division I would have rhon and strike up against any other the center backs in this league yeah and with with Byron and and Spence or even Byron and great I’m very comfortable with that defense at a

Championship level I I definitely think there’s still an argument to say it’s fair that there’s a hangover from from last season and the season before and that was the defensive fault I can buy that but there’s still just far too many basic goalkeeping mistakes that he wasn’t making Championship

Season won Under belela Premier League season one when he was facing far better players behind closed doors fine but still you know and look at his save percentages I mean I’ve got him here in front of me yeah well I mean look they’re the one that out to me here

Jason is shots on target against now we faced the second least in the league can’t blame the defense how can you blame the defense when you’ve faced the second least in the whole division it makes no sense to to to argue that point and and I’m going you know just down the

Percentages here from um where is it if I can just find it quickly um so season in the championship when he came in and replaced um keyo 10 games 83% save percentage right the SE so small pool of game only 10 games fine next season in the Premier

League 76% save percentage season after 66 season after 59 so it’s constantly dropped it’s con consistantly dropped and then this season is at 64% which is only 5% increase on his percentage last season and we were all saying that it were like a hologram last season so for

Me I don’t think he has improved I think he’s facing worse players on the weekly and he’s got a better defense in front of him than he did last season and he’s still causing us problems you know and it is Trick go sorry BR no I was just

Gonna say no I mean it’s hard I’m not a big stat person to be honest I don’t live live and die by what stats say but I mean we’ve we’ve made the second lowest number of saves we’ve got the second lowest number of shots on Target and the save percentage is third bottom

I mean it’s just I mean it’s just daming isn’t it I mean that is just damning there’s no there’s no there’s no getting round that is it J no I mean look again we’re gonna I’m always cautious of bringing up the extreme to prove a point but you

Know if you think about the best team through history they’ve always had fantastic goalkeepers behind them you know the Manchester United teams that had schmeichel um Edwin vesar when they didn’t have them quality of Keepers and they went through Roy Carroll Ben Foster and I know Ben Foster were a top keeper

But this he still weren’t that level Ben Foster taibe even bz who were a World Cup winner they replac them Keepers quickly because they were costing them too many points because they’re the last line of defense you need that keeper to pull you out sometimes look at Allison

At Liverpool I mean he’s just you know he’s arguably they most important player at time made him a Premier League winner mate when they went and signed him it took him and Van dijk fair but you know they they he completely revolutionized that that team and I would say you know

When when Arsenal went through that cycle of trying to replace Seaman they they had a similar situation with almunia and and a couple of others you know and these are all good goalkeepers almunia was a premier league goalkeeper but it wasn’t that level and we’re talking about the championship level to

To potentially win the division so I would be confident in saying if we had and I I’m not really seen a huge amount of um the top Keepers in the championship but if we did have a top top Championship goalkeeper I’m talking a San Johnston or maybe even a Dean

Enderson you know who’s going through a bit of a tough time in his career at the moment he maybe would have been prepared to sit down to right at the top end of the championship I would say that we’d be another six or seven points better off I I believe that

Yeah yeah it’s it’s yeah it’s difficult isn’t it because the potential of him that’s the thing we all talk about that’s what we all think he is still only 23 yeah you know he is exceptionally young and and it’s a role where there’s no hiding any mistakes punished and you know with

Social media now any glaring errors are shown time and time again um is there a way back on track familiar do you think do you think there you can see a future with him as lead to’s long-term goalkeeper or do you think it’s at a point where it’s a case of

Look we have to be be be Cutthroat and whatever we thought about this high potential player from a few years ago it’s just not going to happen you’re 100% spot on with that you’re 100% spot on I mean goalkeepers don’t make their Prime until probably 30 31 32 some of

Them and he is extremely young my gut feeling is that he will leave leads at some point and then go on to be a successful goalkeeper probably play for France probably play for a top top team because he’s gained so much experience so young I do think though that he needs

A reset I I think he needs the move as much as leads need to move him on um he just seems to have lost his way because when he first came into the side what he was showing was a natural kind of ability to be a top go goalkeeper

From shot stopping to distribution and it almost feels like either the confidence are setting the environment losing the Elsa whatever it might be it has it’s compounded into this issue that we now see a goalkeeper in front of us that we’ve got no no confidence in you’re absolutely right when he brings

The ball out not got a problem with it you know he’s fairly composed he’s almost got that bit of arrogance where he’s like yeah I can shift the ball shift the ball this way and he can play sidewood passes that’s fine but ultimately the goalkeeper is there to

Stop the ball going in the back of the net and I mean I know he’s been coached now to punch everything that comes or Parry everything that comes out from Corners I don’t like that I don’t like it at all I think he’s you know he’s

Like six foot six six foot seven he should be going up and claiming them balls and coming over all Defenders all attackers to to to grab that I’ve seen people defending him the other day saying that he couldn’t come out and collect that I mean when the lad from

From um centry heads the ball is four yards in front of him and Melia ends up in behind his goal line trying to stop it he just it’s just warful goalkeeper uh warful goalkeeping sorry he’s not a warful goalkeeper but I don’t have any confidence in him I I I

Don’t it’s for me it’s it’s gone yeah it’s um it’s a real shame let’s get to some of your comments because there’s some fantastic comments coming in guys we really appreciate that uh do smash a like on the video as well um digler to be honest I don’t feel I’ve

Seen enough of him to decide I definitely would not replace him in January what do you think Jason when would you be cut throat about him actually in January would you say right let’s do something or do you even give Dalo another go strange one with d isn’t

It I mean there was a lot of talk before he came in that he would be number one and then it just it’s absolutely not been anything like that unless D has been given a lovely contract I would be stunned if he decided to step into leads

As the number two I I definitely think that there was a conversation that Melia was going to go and then either the option that he wanted didn’t come up and he ended up staying I I I would I would absolutely think that that would be the case and I think the big difference

Between the two is that Dalo isn’t good with his feet I think D is probably equal in terms of his shot stop and abilities to what we’ve seen from Mel for the last three seasons and I don’t agree with the fact that we seen enough of him we’ve seen this from Melly now

For three seasons and I can absolutely get like I said give him a little bit of slack with the fact that he did have a bad defense in front of him and he would facing countless shots and all the rest I I get that but this is now carrying on

It’s a trend now that he’s showing against Championship Strikers and midfielders that are having shots against him you know these are not world class players that he’s playing against every week so for me it’s a tricky one because I think January the probably is more pressing

Places to to to look at and I think trying to replace him for anything less than six seven eight million is going to be probably quite tricky because nobody’s going to want to sell their number one but depends on how serious the um the 49ers are about getting out

Of this division in the next five months yeah yeah indeed um Gail thanks for your comment love I like Meier but not sure if he’s good enough but probably okay this season in the championship yeah I think certainly after the start to the season I thought he’s probably going to

Be just fine and like we mentioned already about being a bit of a ball playing goalkeeper as well I thought he would be he would be okay I make Chris here you guys will do a stream about anything what you of course he’s bloody good enough United debate

Chris he’s a Lincoln fan come on we can’t blame him there you go um John I’ve been watching leads over 40 years and I’ve seen a lot worse it’s the defense in front of him that’s making him look bad keep the faith I mean you’ve you’ve referenced comment earlier

Uh Jason I mean yeah I mean leads US history with goalkeepers I mean ruper and I mean we’ve had some unbelievable we’ve had worse we have had worse that that doesn’t mean that we should be talking about it um yeah Keiko was I mean what a terrible Sig that was um

Rich spoed by Nigel Martin w’t we we talking was just you know you can’t get better really we’ve had some bons I mean even Casper didn’t play a particular well for leag lead um and he obviously went on to have a great career um yeah tricky one tricky one but it’s a vital

Position brownie it’s such a massive massive position what’s your take what do you think what what do you think we should do in general um in Jan I don’t know for me I I think you stick with him to be honest I think despite all this I feel that to to try

And get an upgrade is going to be exceptionally difficult in January I don’t see it to be honest I don’t I don’t see if I was trying to pull the trigger I would be looking at left back and attacking Midfield more I think um than goalkeeper um I think it’s a

Definitely a conversation for next summer though I think if you know for example if we’re back in the Premier League would you want Mel net in the Premier League again I mean it’s it’s you know I’m sorry to say it’s a no for me unless unless there’s big

Improvements over the next few months I I truly like take away the the the kicking aspect for a minut it and and you have to get somebody that can do that job as a goalkeeper right but if you were to put any of the other 23 goalkeepers from this division in our

Net I don’t think we would be any worse off for points any of them any single one of them because I don’t think that melier has done that much from collecting crosses commanding his box shot stopping sure the the the L but all Keepers make top saves all Keepers make

The odd top save that not to sound like Ro but that’s his job that’s what he’s there for right like so I’m I’m telling you I I can’t think of a game where I think oh melier has got us that point today like my word he say five six seven

Shots because we’re not that kind of team we’re actually dominating the games yeah he should be pulling that one save off against Leicester to win as a game that’s that’s how I see it because the facts are is when you’re under the C should you know four five six chances

Come at you and you save them all or whatever then one goes in that’s fine it’s understandable that’s not the way that it is with Mia he has one shot against him and if it’s not straight at him it goes in I know do you know I I

Almost think you know and I don’t think this is just him but I think you know you still get those moments with strike and certainly when alien was playing this season I think you know when we were taking hammerings in that second season I think something I think a

Confidence switch was flicked when we were getting battered I really do I I just think they’ve never quite been the same players that there were pre those absolute hammerings that we got um you know I think there’s there’s definitely something clicked over in their mentality at that point foot footballers

Are not robots are they the facts are is they are just humans that are dealing with the same stresses and anxieties that we deal with on a daily basis and he’s trying to do the job to the best of his ability I I don’t doubt that for a

Second the facts are is the performance that things translated onto the pitch on a Saturday that we see is costing us and football is is Cutthroat we’ve seen fantastic youngsters come through the ranks not just at leads all over football and and make W for one or two

Seasons and then unable to keep that mentality going to keep progressing as as people around them progress and I think a Michael Johnson at Man City do you remember him yeah he were from Le and I mean and and all of a sudden just like that he dropped off the face of the

Earth and and I think he were retired by the time he were 24 25 crazy yeah this is it I mean there is no there’s no kind of pathway is there there’s no direct route is there in football there’s so many variances and so many variables and

Things that can happen to to change that c i i I agree totally uh skip uh think Mia is good enough at this level but when we get promoted think we need a more vocal commanding and a keeper who has a presence at the back I wholeheartedly agree with that

Definitely um John thanks for coming mate we need a correct left back and another left Center back number 10 and will be okay yeah I mean for me I think there’s more pressing concerns in in January indeed CB mesli does not fill me with confidence he makes some worldly

Saves but he also lets shots in he should save reminds me of spray in some ways oh Gary spray careless hands yeah of course um cost is an FA Cup that lad um fir yeah yeah um I played in a team with a very dodgy keeper so we the

Defense would always play out of our skins and win nearly every game because of the dodgy keeper we made sure that nothing got past the defense that I mean that’ be lovely if that happened for us if we just thought right we can’t let any shots on target happen let’s just

Keep everything out but yeah it’s can I just say as and I didn’t know this I just having a look at it while we were chatting his save percentage when he was at lauan now bear in mind he was very young then he was maybe what 18 he still

He started 18 uh 28 games that season so basically played it was basically the first show keeper his safe percentage was 64% he’s at 64% now so maybe the two seasons that we kind of look back on and think oh it was fantastic in terms of shot stopping them season maybe they

Were the outliers you know 10 10 of the he only played 10 games in the championship promotion season 83% save percentage the season behind closed doors 76% but every other season has been 64% or lower every other season brownie so maybe we’re actually just seeing the keeper that he actually is he

Take away that Premier League season behind closed doors and look at Patrick Bamford same same kler fish you know was Matas click a premier league player behind closed doors he was but you know and I I’m just I’m playing Devil’s Advocate to kind of make a point a

Little bit but maybe we just seen the keeper that he actually always was yeah yeah potentially absolutely uh skip fans saying he’s still young he’s played over a hundred games so it’s not an excuse any agree yeah indeed um digler I thought Casper schmeichel was very dodgy when he was at

Leeds Mele is better than he was um skipe i’ take Sam Johnston where’s he at Crystal Palace Crystal Palace yeah um G I think he’s gonna learn and be a top class Keeper in the long term but not at the moment um John I take the rotheram keeper what about that one

Jason Johansson Victor Johansson yeah Victor Johansson yeah I’ve seen a bit of it um looks like a good shot stopper I’m not going to profess to know loads about go Championship goalkeepers to be honest because it’s not something I’ve really looked at but yeah I mean anything

Anybody that can come in for a reasonable amount that can improve the team in such a key area I’d be saying yeah let’s let’s let’s look at them you know I would like somebody with a bit of experience personally I’d like a Sam Johnston um or you know somebody of that

Kind of ilk uh I think that that would be a really really shrewd move yeah yeah indeed CB he’s weak at his near post he just watch as the ball go past him I no it’s just so frustrating isn’t it I mean it’s watching them watching those goals

We conceding again today the near post ones are just oh my God yeah it’s it’s infuriating is it yeah absolutely digler Ari Dalo when robas left we needed a number two replacement so maybe we brought him in as a number two I always thought that was the case actually yeah

But he had the opportunity to go to Bournemouth as number two so why did he choose to drop down to to lead and be number two I just I don’t know over Bournemouth yeah second choice goalkeeper yeah lovely um John obviously D ain’t showing enough to Warrant a

Place and digl yeah D spills into dangerous areas very high amount of his say but apart from that I think he’s okay I mean it was a bit scary watching him in the cup game wasn’t it actually Jason it wasn’t didn’t fill us with with confidence today no it

Didn’t couple of comments there that I’d be interested to just chat about we gails put wec and top goalkeepers in Premier making mistakes all goalkeepers make mistakes I ain’t got a problem with that you know like if melier spilt one every on the thing is melier is not

Throwing the odd one in that’s not what I’m talking about the problem is is that melier doesn’t save seem to save anything that isn’t straight at him every save every save I see you make Gail is the keeper should really save that one I would expect all of the

Championship goalkeepers to save all of them genuinely he never seems to pull out the odd oh my God that was a top save take the the Leicester save out of it and I know he made one the other night but the the fleeting yeah when we played Leicester as an example and he

Had a bit of a sketchy game that game did um the Leicester goalkeeper but he still pulled off two or three top saves and that I found myself saying melee want to save that it happened the other day um the uh com keeper made three or four saes that I thought they were

Really good saes not world class but really good H the same happened against Blackburn think about the save that the Blackburn keeper made that took a deflection the keeper then tipped it up onto the bar Melia wouldn’t have said that he wouldn’t have done not this version Mell that we’re seen right now

We wouldn’t saved that so and the other the other comment I think is interesting Le on showing how little they know about football yeah I was to say shots fired from EAS tell me what you’re on about like give me give me some context to that comment because I mean for me

It’s football’s all about opinions but it’s the ey test and I mean the facts back it back it up as well but this is just the ey test of of watching Mia play football for three years yeah absolutely Russ thanks for your comment mate absolutely bang on considering that

Melier has spent three years in the Premiership his near poost errors are a disgrace and Gail I don’t know what the goalkeeping coach is doing well we’ve changed it didn’t we like you referenced earlier on we changed it from Marcus Abad I think it was who’s West BR now

Far guys coming and and everything and it kind of I did think oh maybe there’s a little bit of a a bit of a change going on there um with that kind of early season promise but it’s kind of um kind of disintegrated again a little bit

What do you think is thinking at the minute Jason do you think he’s thinking it’s okay still and he’s going to stick by this guy or or do you think he’s going to be starting to get really frustrated with this because it is undermining um you know what should be a

Really good campaign to be honest I think the unfortunately I think the priority for farer will be what he can do with the possession of the ball and he will almost take this hanging over o and him and melier as a kind of byproduct of the

Fact that that’s what he he needs in the buildup so I don’t imagine that it’ll be something that he’ll be looking to replace in January I I personally think it’s a bit of a bigger problem than than he maybe would think but that’s how I see it certainly for this season um yeah

Unfortunately yeah yeah it’s it’s a tricky one um guys thank you for all your comments we’re going to be wrapping things up in a couple of minutes so if you got anything else to add please do before we go going forward then obviously it’s a massive game against IP

I I remember a couple of weeks ago when we were having the melier discussion before and a lot of people were saying well he going to get tested against Blackburn they’ve got the best XG in the division apart from lead United lead are first Blackburn was second um and then

He didn’t get tested it literally had nothing to do because the defense did it all for him Blackburn threatened and threatened and threatened but the defense had a fantastic game that day and literally everything was played in front of him and again think back to
