The medieval city of Leuven is home to one of the oldest and most important universities in Europe. The university has its roots in the very centre of Leuven, and was where the Big Bang Theory was theorised. The historic college buildings still dominate many of the squares and streets, and at the very centre of the city is the ornate gothic town hall, which is covered in hundreds of statues of local people and biblical characters.
Leuven also has one of the oldest beguinages in the Low Countries, the Groot Begijnhof, which was founded in the 13th century, and has around 400 individual living quarters.
However, perhaps most importantly of all, Leuven is famous for being the beer capital of Belgium. No small feat in a country that produces hundreds of delicious varieties. Leuven’s premium brews are legendary thanks to the centuries of Flemish tradition and craftsmanship that goes into every drop.
Come with me on an evening stroll around the famous medieval student city of Leuven. Together we will wander through the beautiful city and end the tour with one of Belgium’s best beers. Sometimes it’s a hard life being a guide. 😉

Such a lovely city – especially without all the cars now. The one time I visited it was a working trip which left me far too little time to explore properly. Now I know I have to go back. I loved seeing so much of the Grote Begijnhof (Beguinage). Even though it's now university accommodation it still has the tranquillity I love about such places. And the City Hall is just stunning. Look forward to seeing more of it in your second tour in the city.
Hi Stephan, I had to jump out after the Begijnhof and followed up just now. Thank you again for a wonderful tour. Somehow I took the wrong route when I was visiting. Will definitly check out Leuven another time inspired by your tour. By the way I could not find the second tour with the xmas market!?
