Trying to outsmart the weather.

Sometimes, when the weather is cold and wet, wrapping up in layers of clothing might not be enough to keep yourself warm. That’s when you have to use your head!

    1. “This year, energy prices have come down a bit”.
      Energy prices: “Hold my beer”!
Thank you for this Leonard, I am very much in the cycling doldrums at the moment but feel inspired to get out and reduce the BoF overdraft!

    2. Very interesting observation about being cold indoors for a long period of time. I’m lucky that I have to commute to work, so it’s either train or bike. An easy choice!

    3. I wear a short parka-like coat on my winter-rides, I dont care how it looks, it keeps me warm and cozy…..Plus, my Klean Kanteen insulating bidon with warm tea helps too 🙂 keep riding strong Leonard! atb Gerlach Sven.

    4. Why not invent a smart trainer that generates power but then that power is available to power an electric fire, the faster you pedal, the warmer you get, without wasting money. Seems logical to me ?
I put out 800 to 900 watts over an hour, i could be as warm as toast.

    5. A sensible strategy, keeping the heating on. Interestingly, I also have similar temperature 'check points' to decide whether to ride and what to wear (I live quite near your patch). Keep up the great videos and narative. ❤

    6. I've given up- here in the Scottish highlands it's always either dry, freezing, still and icy -or mild, wet and blowing a hoolie like today… Always perma-dull and with daylight so short I can't be arsed so Zwift it is again tonight….hmmmm..clothes choice? What will I wear? shorts, vest, socks and shoes…job done. I have a tonne of winter kit for every scenario collected over the years including ice spikers in various road/mtb options but to go outside these days at this time of year? nah…. soon be spring the winter solstice is in 6 days time!!

    7. Staying active boosts blood circulation and keeps me warm at home! 😊 If I'm inactive and the heating's low, I feel even colder. Ironically, when I turn up the heating, I notice I need it less as I start moving around more. Exercise really makes a difference! 🏃‍♂️🌡️

    8. I’m happy to go out, as long as there isn’t a black ice risk. I generally stay warm, just the fingers that feel the cold, so good gloves essential for me. Enjoy your rides and here’s to warmer weather!

    9. Well done. I've just never been a cold weather cyclist. I don't like it and never seem to feel warm enough. My biggest issues are my hands an feet. The face I can deal with. For me it ends up being indoor training this time of year & at times that's a struggle. Oh my gosh, I sound so negative. Sheesh.

    10. Hi Leonard I would suggest a look at Castelli clothing for the winter months (and the summer come to that). Something like the Alpha Ros jacket will keep you warm and crucially keeps the wind off, with the right base layer you’re ok down to 3c or so!

    11. I'm with you as far as the temperature threshold goes. 6C (42F for me) is about it. That said, I bought a new pair of winter bib pants to try so we'll see what happens when it gets colder!

    12. 4 layers seems like a lot to me. But whatever works for you.
Zone2 riding in the cold might not always be optimal too, maybe try some interval training as well?

    13. Winter riding can be a bit rough – curious, do you ride with battery socks at all? That makes a HUGE difference for me. You mentioned 6 degrees Celsius, which would be about 42 degress Farenheight for me in the Boston area. At those temps, I'm riding with long pants, base layer on top, wind proof jacket, and battery socks – feet are warm, I'm happy. Love your videos, definitely huge motivation!

    14. LOve this video. It’s getting more difficult for me to get in the cold but I still have fun. I do have an inside trainer. But your video motivates me to get out more often.

    15. Thanks Leonard for another good inspirational vid ive not been on the bike since june, i must admit that i hat the cold and a little reserved about ridding in icy conditions since crashing in the rain in June I'm iffy about wet weather too so I'm going to try to get my fat behind out this coming week i have 3 weeks off before i start new job so no reason not to get a few days out inbetween working in the garage, merry Christmas to you and your other half and look forward to more of your rides in the year ahead

    16. That’s a really decent ride (in my book) for a 4-layer ride. Out of interest, were any of the layers specifically ‘thermal underwear’ type of garment or just layers of ‘normal’ clothes? I wonder what Mrs Leonardo made of last year’s austerity measures 😅? Happy cycling.

    17. Nice ride Leo. Personally I can't be bothered riding in weather under 50° , so trainer it is for me. Also, it's a good time I find it to rein in my diet a bit tighter during winter . I'm also getting back into some different modes of working out like going for walks, walk/jog on the treadmill and want to do some rowing in the gym as well too.. . Although cycling is great, they say it's good too change up your routine. Good luck , watch those pints and treats over the holidays and stay warm ! 😉👍
