CUMBERLAND PARISH #1: CAMERTON
Welcome folks to Cumberland for the first time! I’d have been here last year, the name of this series would have been different. You see, earlier in 2023, Cumbria’s six former districts were reorganised into just two. Cumberland covers the same area as the former districts of Carlisle, Copeland and Allerdale, and Camerton, where we are today, used to be an Allerdale parish. It’s a small village located on a hillside, which slopes steeply down into the valley of the River Derwent, about four miles to the East of Workington.
There are two theories surrounding the derivation of Camerton’s name. Whilst there’s no denying “ton” means “village”, the first element is a little more difficult to digest. It might be a personal name – possibly “Cāfmǣr” – or it could be the Welsh term “cymer” which means “confluence”. Whilst the name might not be a nailed on certainly, there’s plenty that is. For a small place, this has a lot to cover. For a start, Camerton once had two collieries – both of which mined coal and clay. Connected to them both were railway lines, and although these are now gone, the remains of them can still be seen, if you know where to go!
The church here stands right on the banks of the river, and is said to be haunted by the ghost of Black Tom, who’s name is also associated with the old pub. Let’s go and find out who he was as we explore a Cumbrian village for the first time!

Having voted for Camerton, had to make sure I looked out for this one, Andy. Had missed the fact that the Cumbrian parishes were reorganised, that was interesting. Very enjoyable visit to a new area, even if Storm Debi was in full swing. Narrow roads, steep hills and an interesting church and graveyard. Looking forward to the next one.
If you like churches, have a look at Brigham Cockermouth (it is getting work done to it on the inside though) also lots of history in the village, Allonby Cemetery its always very clean and lovely (just wrap up warm as its right next to the sea). Great video by the way look forward to the next one
