Carbon markets have grown in popularity amongst businesses out a conviction that they provide economic incentives to invest in sustainable practices and technologies, creating the possibility of a positive impact on the environment.

However, even though it is clear that businesses can leverage carbon markets as a means to finance and scale up their decarbonisation efforts, there’s also an underlying risk that companies will exploit carbon offsetting to make unsubstantiated claims and hide corporate inaction.

The rise of greenwashing poses a significant challenge. This makes upholding high standards within carbon markets ever more essential to ensure transparency, accurate reporting, and credible verification processes.

This seventh ETS Talk delved into the synergies between carbon markets and private sector decarbonisation. It also explored the role of the EU in promoting effective corporate climate action.
