We hit the road on a spontaneous trip to Utah for the weekend. Maddy and I always talked about doing the Portal trail. We’ve seen and heard lots of things about it soooooo we decided this weekend to do it. We started on day one at the Jackson Trail which is one of my favorites, I feel like not many people talk about it but its a fun one and has a lot of exposure that I figured would get us somewhat ready for Portal.
At the end of day one we googled the trail The Portal and quickly became fearful. All articles were titled “this is the deadliest trail in America”. We did not really know what we were getting ourselves into. And more importantly we did not realize how much climbing it was to actually get to the trail. This was where I doubted ourselves. I figured by the time we would get to the trail we were going to be too exhausted to even be able to ride down. And like I predicted once we reached the top, we were smoked but so much excitement kicked in that it gave us a second wind of energy and I am so thankful for that. This was an experience of a lifetime and a trail that I have always been wondering about. Comment below let me know if you’ve done it or thinking of doing it. If you do decide to do it, you got this!!! Be careful and have fun.
Thank you for watching and hope to Catch you on a mountain near you.

    1. Wow what a ride. Love your videos . Aside from all the views places you and your friends go , I love all the info you give along your route. Great videos keep them coming 😉👌

    2. Too funny, some of us old timers have looped almost everything in Moab. Last time I was there I looped Portal from the Poison Spider approach. Which is not nearly as much climbing as looping Porcupine or the upper starting points. Just remember, a long climb on your mtb is still better than sitting in an office rotting away. 😉

    3. Nice work!! I was thinking to myself that I couldn't believe that you had ridden all that way and not used the word "chunky" and all of a sudden "chun-KEE" came rolling out. Thanks for the great video.

    4. Did this last week with some friends and my wife! Rode my steel hard tail and man…..I felt like I’d been in a bar fight all day when we finished Portal! Cheers.

    5. Back in 1994, I parked off 279 and rode up the Poison Spider Jeep Trail to Gold Bar, and then to the Portal. Mind me, was in my late twenties and was very fit from working construction and riding almost every day. The Portal is still my most memorable and favorite trail, I hope to maybe try riding it again. If not, at least I have once in my life, plus I was riding solo.

    6. Up it’s a scary trail but the trail end of porcupine trail (last leg of the Whole Enchilada) is 2x tougher scarier. 3 flat tires and same exposure as here plus about (20) 4 foot ledge drops.. The WE trail survives are the #1 toughest
