TransPennine Express mothballed 13 new Spain-built Nova 3 trains as part of drastic plans to slash services from December to simplify its operations and ‘deliver improved punctuality and reliability’.

TPE only began using these in August 2019 but rail bosses have now confirmed they will be withdrawn because they don’t have enough drivers trained to operate them so the remaining services across the north of England and the south of Scotland will be operated by older trains, including the Nova 2 and Nova 1.

As announced by the government in early December One of Britain’s largest rail projectsinto the Transpennine Route is on track to deliver better journeys, more quickly for passengers and freight in the North thanks to a £3.9 billion funding boost announced by Rail Minister Huw Merriman.

The investment will also support digital signalling along the route to allow trains to run closer together, leading to more frequent and reliable services.

It will support TransPennine Express in engaging with manufacturers on options for up to 29 new trains to replace the existing diesel fleet, in addition to new trains for local stopping services operated by Northern, ensuring trains along the line are suited to the modernised tracks.

    1. I visited the UK in January 2020 and rode a tonne of trains including TPE 185s and the CAF Nova 3 sets. The Nova 3s are far better to ride in. It's a shame they are gone.

    2. 1) Class 90, 2) class 777, 3) class 390, 4) class 331, 5) class 57, 6) class 31, 7) class 221, 8) class 333, 9) class 755, 10) LMS Stainer class 8F, 11) as there were two trains… loco was 70 the unit was 156, 12) class 350, 13) class 66, 14) class 47, and finally at 15) LNER Class A1 Peppercorn

    3. Would that mean then with your connections the NOVA 3S are planned to come to the West Midlands as chiltern railways to replace the former WSMR mk3S since been with them 2008 till now. As it would be ideal instead of chiltern investing new trains for the network to replace the old aging 165 fleet to have more locohauled stock between London m and Birmingham.

    4. Always thought that TPEs aspiration and reality were quite interesting as the operational scope of the network has really gone outside what would called aspirational reality in respect there should always be enough crew to manage the rolling stock which means that all crews should know all traction and this would stop issues like this , now TFW have a similar size network if larger but the depots at Carmarthen , Cardiff , Shrewsbury cover most of the traction which is more diverse than TPE , but they have trained the traincrews on all of the modern stock , yes there are issues with the 197s slipping in north Wales but to withdraw new rolling stock and increase passenger capacity on the 185's when they were declined funding for a fourth carriage a few years ago and the possibility of removing some duplicated stopping trains from northern which itself is the more logical solution but northern itself needs more trains is rather a short term solution

    5. 1. DB Class 90 , 2. Merseyrail Class 777, 3. Pendolino Class 390, 4. Northern Class 331, 5. WCRC Class 57, 6. BR Class 31 + WCRC Class 47, 7. Grand Central Class 180, 8. Northern Class 333, 9. Greater Anglia Class 755, 10. LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0, 11. Colas Class 70 & Northern Class 156, 12. LNW Class 350, 13. EWS (DB) Class 66, 14. WCRC Class 47, 15. LNER Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific

    6. The TPE cash was already allocated for the electrification work so i would imaging most of the extra cash will be for the new build stuff ,as for the progress of this scheme it is painfully slow at best ,tenders for such works should be like they used to be you issue a tender for price and set date for completion , if the contractors over run then they are fined .

    7. To give some defence to TPX –
      (1) residents of Scarbados aren't complaining about living next to a railway depot and station, they're complaining that the class 68s are much louder than the other trains that have regularly used that line over the last 30+ years
      (b) all of their drivers are trained on class 185s, but for a variety of reasons they haven't been able to get enough trained on class 68s, so when staffing is tight it makes more sense to get all drivers out there on stock they are trained for rather than pulling them off those duties for training on new stock
(iii) they now realise that getting the 68s was a mistake in the first place. The leasing and maintenance arrangements are extraordinarily complicated because that the locos and carriages are built by different manufactures, and owned and looked after by different organisations. What seemed like a sensible plan at the time, when they couldn't get more 802s delivered in a reasonable timeframe and there were no suitable DMUs being built, has turned into a nightmare and they are now just trying to get out of it as best they can.

    8. The 185 have been running as double unit on the cleethorpes to Liverpool line that was good with the 68 going they be back to been 3 car train . When they was 3 car train before I used to let then pass when out at Sheffield back to doncaster as they was so over crowded. I would even get the northern pacer ( the train I dislike the most in my life then got in a TPE sardines can

    9. You Mentioned the TfW routes offering half price. But they aren't the railways. they are bus routes. Trains haven't been to Lampeter in many years. when you said T services I immediatly realised they were buses.

    10. It really annoys me that tpe are doing this the nova 3s are the best thing they’ve ever launched (in my opinion) and the 185s are like 20 years old and there still running them

    11. The reason behind Nova 3 sets withdrawal might be due to the lack of drivers thus the lack of interest to spend money in getting them fixed to afterwards be as seen from the begining, stabled across a variety of yards such as Crewe South Yd and Arpley apart from Longsight TMD. So given the circumstances, there is no better chance for charter operator Locomotive Services limited to get there Staycation Mark3 stock out from the shed and fill the available slots across North and South Pennines corridors. Commuters would be very appreciate in my oppinion. Thank you for another interesting video.

    12. I believe the withdrawal is due to metal fracturing of the CAF built MkV carriages. Nothing wrong with the 68s.

Very expensive repair programme that TPE cannot afford. Its as simple as that. They'll be trying to get some sort of compensation back from CAF I expect.

TPE had to use Loco hauled stock as per their franchise contract.

    13. Maybe CAF could have built the Class xxx Nova 3 as Bi-mode trains that would have operated on the Scarborough route and Hitachi to manufacture few more extra Class 802 Nova 2 if needed.

I do know that CAF are to build new Tri-mode Civity Class xxx trains for LNER to replace the Class 91 Mk4 stocks and are expected to enter service from next year or in 2025.

And TPE to retain the Class 185 DMU Desiro or cascade them to SWR to replace the Class 158 and Class 159 Sprinter Express units.

    14. Great video yet again Gordon and plenty of info which make your videos very interesting. Wishing you and all your family a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Keep up the great work now that your back up and running 👏👏👏👍
