I've been thinking about redoing some sweaters I made from pattern tests over the last year that I want to fit me better, but wasn't sure about it but this really inspired me. Also I loved the reinforcement you made for the sides and bottom with the scraps you used for testing. Looks great!

You should have a material liner…so nothing falls through and it will give you the sturdiness you want.
