Before leaving Greece I had to make one of the HARDEST DECISIONS of this tour.
My plan was to cycle all the way to Istanbul, but as I was getting closer and closer, winter was slowly approaching. This led to making the hard decision of not going there, but turning my wheels around towards eastern Europe, more specifically to Bulgaria.
After cycling in Bulgaria for a bit and taking too many trains I arrived in Romania. Bikepacking in Romania has been quite an experience.
The eurovelo 6, at least on a good portion, doesn’t really go close to the Danube, which made it mentally difficult. The drivers are the worst that I’ve seen so far, but nevertheless, I got to enjoy the Romanian hospitality from the first night on the 10th country of this bike tour.

These kilometres of cycling in eastern Europe have been filled with lots of emotions and cultural shocks. Nevertheless, there are still more kilometres to make until Vienna and I hope you join me for the next ones as well.

  1. Cycling again on the Eurovelo 6 after the amazing summer months on the Eurovelo 8, makes me never want to do this trail again😣. While planning the odyssey I was thinking about doing the entire EV6, but now I am happy I didn't. I find it rather boring and unspectacular 🫠.
Would you recommend any section in particular (the Danube starts in Germany, so I cannot say about that part, but somehow I have low expectation)?

  2. 21:15 I don't know if you realized it, but the gathering that forced you off the road was a funeral procession. Anyway, I hope you had more fun on the next Bulgarian segment. The most spectacular biking in Bulgaria is in the mountains, but you crossed them by train. 🙂

  3. As a romanian i can tell you this: road cycling in Romania is very dangerous because there is no bike culture here, there is 0 infrastructure, 0 bike lanes, and the drivers have little to no respect for cyclists. Me and my friends stick to mountain biking (the landscapes here are absolutely superb, the MTB trails are amazing) . There are many of us (me included) that also practice road cycling, (we know the area and know to pick less busy roads etc) but the agresivity of the drivers combined with the total lack of bike lanes, make road cycling a truly stressful experience here.
