Veliko Turnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria, is brought to you with more than 7000 years of history. The houses, stacked one above the other, situated on the steep hills of the town, show a remarkable and unique architectural style. The bridges, unexpectedly flying over the river, palaces and towers, spectacular museums, ancient columns with inscriptions left by our proud rulers, monasteries with unique mural paintings and frescoes and the Arbanassi fortress-houses.
The nights are filled with the constant voice of the river, the glitters and dazed lights, playing on the fairy face of the town and the noise of the energy-filled stormy student’s life.
From its rich historical value, to its thriving modern nightlife and lush natural surroundings that provide many excellent opportunities for outdoor recreational activities, Veliko Turnovo offers you everything you could ever want for the perfect holiday.
If you travel by an automobile , Veliko Tarnovo is situated at the crossroads between the roads E85 (Russe β Burgas) and E772 (Sofia β Varna with Hemus β A2 highway in both ends).
One of the best things about Veliko Turnovo is that you can go everywhere by foot! Whether to stroll along and enjoy the beautiful architecture and the nice weather or if only to clear your head after hours spent in the pub, you can reach any part of the town without any difficulties.
If you donβt have your own car and yet you want to travel, you can always use the public transport. Many regular bus lines operate into the city and to some of the nearby towns and villages. The ticket for the city bus costs only 0.70 leva and can be bought in the bus. For the places outside of Veliko Turnovo and its immediate surroundings, you can ask at the Western Bus Station or the Tourist Information Centre, located into the city centre, where you can also receive information about rental cars.
For your convenience, many taxis operate and they are not only comfortable, but are also very cheap compared to taxis in many other cities around the country. There should be a meter in every car and their tariff should be noted on the front window screen.
For close destinations, especially in direction Dryanovo/Tryavna you can also use the train from the local train stationin Veliko Turnovo, and can obtain information about all trains around Bulgaria and international destinations from the train information bureau located in the city centre.
Veliko Tarnovo is a city located in the centre of Bulgaria, on the halfway between Sofia and Varna. South of the town rise the cold northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains and north of the city extends the vast Danube Plain.
Veliko Tarnovo is a city of many sights and one of the most popular tourist centres in Bulgaria. Its unique location on the three hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, makes the town one of the most beautiful in Bulgaria and also adds special charm to the cityβs appearance and its own identity. A walk through this ancient city can leave anyone who stepped once on the narrow cobblestone streets speechless.
The old houses mixed with modern buildings look as if they are perched on one other and each of them is a unique monument of architecture. Veliko Tarnovo is one of the few places where nature and all build by men complement each other to create an unexpected harmony.
All monuments preserved in Veliko Tarnovo has kept the spirit of all ages and periods of Bulgarian history β from Ancient times to present days. The first traces of human presence in the region dated from VI century BC.A Traian 7 village was found on Tsarevets dated back from the 3rd millennium B.O.T.
Throughout the Middle Ages, Tsarevgard Tarnov was the pearl in Bulgarian tsarsβ crown. After Bulgarians declared their liberation from Byzantine rule in 1185, Tarnovo became the capital city of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and remained the capital of Bulgaria until the invasion of the Ottomans in Europe.
Arbanasi is a village in Veliko Tarnovo Municipality, Veliko Tarnovo Province of central northern Bulgaria, set on a high plateau between the larger towns of Veliko Tarnovo (four kilometres away) and Gorna Oryahovitsa.
