You have all the reason to hate those drivers so do I. As a portuguese I am ashamed of the reckless behaviour and no respect for the bicycles that have the same right to be on the road as they have. The law is clear regarding the space between the bicycles and the car and width should be the same as a normal car. Please be safe, avoid the roads with a lot of cars and trucks.
Yeah, here in the USA pick up truck drivers will take a swerve at you, race their engines and try to scare you. They think it is funny. We call them "red necks" and "hicks". In the USA south and the state of Utah, there's a lot of inbreeding and very stupid/psychopathic people. Fortunately in the western USA there's a lot of dirt roads and trails to get away from the traffic. Portugal looks like a prison with all that fencing.
I want to make a "reproach" to you, you are "petty-bourgeois whiners." Your youth and of course, children of a world full of abundance, you are demonstrating that the lack of typical comforts of rich countries causes you this state of irritation. Life will continue to teach you, and then if you mature, you may enjoy the "little things".
After a literally near death experience riding towards Galway, Eire I use a length of insulating/ protecting pipe foam. It protrudes out across my rear rack and discourages drivers from trying to pass to closely.

Yes it sure sounds like Portugal should be avoided by cyclists. Northern Ontario in Canada have crazy drivers and no shoulders too.
