Just how hard was the first ever Tour de France? The 1903 edition of the race started with a 467km stage between Paris and Lyon, a real test of endurance. Hank and Mark went to France to find out, in period-correct kit and on vintage bikes!

Would you be mad enough to take on this challenge?! 🤯
And utterly stupid riders
Three years later and still my favorite GCN presentation. The bikes were ludicrous but the effort was real. Shows just how far our sport has come. Good show! 👍
Did they have freewheels in 1903?
I can barely ride more than 60kms and Mark makes this look so easy with no gears and a 20kgs bike 🤦🏻♂️
Did you also do amphetamines, cocaine, tabacco, drink alcohol and do plenty of other drugs during the ride, like they (openly) did in the old days?
I primarily just cycle to commute and occasionally for a little ride in the evening but I love to watch the more documentary style videos on endurance racing and especially the older bikes.
Absolutely beautiful. Chapeau to the two of you. Huge respect. And amazing respect to the original Tour riders, doing this route, with much of it on roads that were dirt, cobbles, and what pavement there was, was a lot like chip/seal.
Absolutely amazing. Thanks again Mark and Hank!
To me, by far the most important video ever from GCN.
Respect.
It's a hard drive in a car.
What isn’t mentioned here is that the surfaces they cycled on would have been far harder to cycle on
I come back here once or twice a year to watch GCN's absolute Masterpiece – displaying what these Men back then were willing to take is beyond impressive, as well as your will to reenact it in that way. Thanks guys!
epic
Absolutely amazing these bikes weighed 50plus pounds in their day.u had to do all the maintenance urself. There were no paved roads either!Would love to see today's pros do this. Then we'll see who's got what it takes!
To most viewers, this is just another video. To true cyclists, this is pretty EPIC!
Love this edition of top gear
naturally you wouldn't use music from the period.
About the descent. Bikes of that era didn't have freehubs (or did they?), so didn't you just pedal backwards as well as use the brakes to slow down?
whats the tube behind the seat tube on the bike? at 5:46
damn 20kg, and I complain about my 11kg bike
You guys missed a trick! Should have put onions around your necks – like the two English airmen in 'Allo 'Allo 😂
Great 👍 video
The helmet is so stunning 🤣
Well good boys! I think this really demonstrated the herculean rides that to old timers did. Making that fact even more spectacular is the equipment that they did it on. I have nothing but respect for those that came before me. Great video I would love to see more of these kinds of stories and recreations. Cheers m/,
My road bike weighs eighteen kilos. I can relate to this a lot.
this was beautiful.
I've seen photos of riders stopping to smoke prior to the large climbs. I believe that they thought it would open up their lungs or something. Good times.
I hope this is real and no faking scenes here 🤩 you give MI chills
I still honestly do not know why I come back to this video time and again.
you cant ever replica those bad roads ofcourse
I just kept thinking about that horrible saddle.
9pm and still light out over there
Great job lads, for period correctness I would recommend a few Gitanes or Gauloises with your petit dejeuner.
the seat is way to small its not what thy tell you
In 1903 there was much bad sportsmanship, sabotage, poisonings…
Was the bottom bracket just pure chance? 🤷♂️
Who knew Freddy Mercury loved cycling? 13:19
The first tour was won brakeless fixed gear 52/20 gearing. Do it again properly. You had it easy with your fancy freewheels and brakes. SLACKERS!
Could you please let me know about your cycle in detail?
This is the kind of video you get when a channel makes too many videos.
Why isn't this a feature length? This was amazing.
OMG that face from Hank, in the middle of the night, about to doze off, priceless! Tremendous effort guys, well done and thanks for sharing!
Epic!
Well done boys!…
I am just gob smacked.
Unbelievable effort. Thoroughly enjoyed though I felt for you both!
Great video! Amazing recreation! Just thinking hear …it would be cool to see you guys tackle some of your endurance rides on terrain closer to what those original ridrs experienced. Just let me fully prepare some 100 year old bicycles for you and the experience would be quite genuine…on a bicycle that works as it was designed to do when it was new. There's a few of us still here thst can do it and the reward is satisfying to see someone use a museum piece as it was ment to be. Thanks again for the ride it was worth the effort!
Guitar instrumental song starting at 6:42 so nice, name?
