Specialized Bicycles and their many lawsuits

Today we are going to be discussing the history of Specialized Bicycle Components and the many lawsuits they have been involved with. They seem to have calmed down over the past few years but for a while it seemed as though their main business practice was to threaten court action.

    1. My first nicer bike was the M2 Stumpjumper. Ive had several Specialized bikes since. Ive considered them one of my favorite bikes for years. Learning what a Greaseball the owner is really puts a stank on all of that

    2. I remember in the 70s they came out with the first high pressure clincher tires, before that we all rode around on expensive "sew-up" aka tubular tires. I think at first that's all they sold, maybe water bottles and cages.

    3. I told myself 15 years ago I would never buy a specialized again and I haven’t. Since then I have probably spent around 30 grand on bicycles. Specialized did not get a dime.
I’ve also noticed throughout the years that any shop that Carrie specialize has some shop maintenance issues. Now I’m not the biggest fan of trek bicycles either but if you notice at a truck dealer there tech areas are somewhat sublime looking and the work is guaranteed. At any given particular specialized dealer the tech area usually looks like a bomb went off

    4. So basically, their foundation is based on stealing a design. Then after they fight everybody to make sure nobody copies them 😂🤡 hypocrit

    5. Specialized reminds me of Volkswagen: another predatory company with greed as their prime motivation. Let’s not forget the Diesel Gate fiasco VAG got caught red-handed at. I donated my last Specialized helmet to a Thrift shop. Note:, I also sold my 2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, when it started behaving like a VW.

    6. FYI Cafe Roubaix was located in Cochrane, Alberta, not Calgary. Dan has shut the shop down now, and IIRC is building wheels from home. Dan is also about the nicest human you'd ever meet. And for Spec to pick on him was an absolute outrage and poisoned me against. Specialized for life.

    7. Specialized has hurt the Bicycle Industry more than contributed to it by far. I will not contribute to this manufacturer by buying any of their products. Why not just rely on a great product's reputation than sue competitors who try to confuse the consumer? Most of us who spend that kind of money have done the research. If everyone is trying to copy you because you're the best, the word will get out their. I feel most of these law suits were intended to hurt and this turns my stomach.

    8. Sounds like " Mike" is an arrogant prat. I own a Specialized Chisel great bike, and have used their tyres and accesories on my cycles for decades….this obsession with sueing is not in the spirit of cycling. Disappointing.

    9. I own a specialized bike but will never buy them again. The bike was fine, this video is fine, I was planning on a different brand of bike anyhow, but now I will buy that different brand with a faint whiff of "take that you sewer suers!!" I was sued once and hate hate hate hate on bogus f*cked up dumb-arse vindictive evil corporate suers."

    10. You should do some research into the way Specialized bullies bike shops. Ever wonder why you don't see shops carrying Specialized and one of the other big bike brands anymore, to be fair Trek does this also, but not to the same extent. Bike n Hike and Mountain View both quite caring Specialized because they were too difficult to work with.

    11. I've passed on Specialized many times in the past, but went with a Specialized Fuse on my last hardtail as it had everything I was looking for spec wise. I don't have brand loyalty, but I won't dismiss a particular item simply because of the brand either. Fundamentality, the engineering/cost/quality is the most important thing for me as a consumer as well as availability of parts. As far as their monopolisation of the market goes, they suck big time and is just one of the reasons why as a brand they are not on my list of first choice brands.

    12. Been riding all my life. I am 63, finally got my 2022 Sworks MTB and Roadbike. They are sublime. Zero issues and I have never been faster. Beating guys half my age.

    13. OMG! I will never buy a Specialized product again, and our DC/Store (factory Direct Sales) here in Houston is Awesome! Amazing Staff, but to learn this….

    14. there are prolly 65 mtn companies. i by that i mean Frame makers.
keep shopping, the LBS only scratches the surface of what's out there. and believe me, some of the best bikes are the ones that "you've never heard of"

    15. They should change their name to SpeciaLIES. This has surly gotten rid of any fondness for Specialized that I’ve ever had. What dickheads…

    16. So I don’t know the particulars in these cases but quite typically in US civil suits, if someone is successfully sued for any amount…they at fault party can be on the hook for all of the winner’s legal bills…hence the $1 award is not just one dollar. If you do a dive into this, be sure and do your best to determine if this was the case. It’s a little know dark underbelly of these lawsuits many are missing. If Specalized lawyers hand a small upstart company a bill for $2 mill…that is effectively the end of that company and Special-Ed really wins with no downside.

    17. @2:12 The first Stumpjumpers were crap. I remember seeing, in a little San Anselmo bike shop, a Stumpjumper frame was hung from the ceiling with a sign, "Why we don't sell Stumpjumpers," and you could see that the head tube was traumatically ovalized as a result of landing a jump. They were cheap road bikes that had fat tires on them. Fisher, on the other hand, had Fred Wolf (RIP) in his test department, a big guy, a piano mover, who was told to ride the products hard, try to break them.
