Hogan Howe has sparked controversy after suggesting that cyclists should have number plates and be registered and regulated in a similar way to cars.

    Is this really necessary?

    1. Don’t they think car number plates can’t be cloned ! Vine trying to justify 2 deaths, unbelievable. Yes the legislation needs to be tightened and laws updated for cyclists.

    2. Who is going to pay for it? As zero emission vehicles, presumably the road tax would be zero, so the tax payer will have to fund it? Why? Motor vehicles kill hundreds more cyclists & pedestrians than cyclists do.

    3. It won't happen. No government would bring it in. It would put cyclists off and so people would stop. It's the same reason helmets aren't compulsory, it puts off cyclists. No government would want less cyclists, it means more emissions and more congestion. Non story.

    4. to all those who love cars and hate people on bicycles – know that the more people you encourage to get on bicycles, the freer and less traffic-ridden the roads become. add to that well-integrated cycle lanes, and those bloody cyclists are completely out of your way! as are the less passionate motorists, who are now on bicycles. everyone wins.
