Is expensive bike tech to blame for falling participation numbers in the sport of cycling? Alex and Ollie discuss how rising costs are killing the sport we love. Thereโs also news that Decathlon are joining the WorldTour peloton, increased UCI kit fines and the number plates on bikes debate rears its ugly head once again.

What do you think should be done to combat the rising costs of cycling? ๐ธ
Heya
Anybody got any good recommendations for rim brake wheel upgrades? I was looking at Campagnolo Zondas but was wondering what the other options are around that price range.
Thanks in advance, Ed x
Ah. The good old Met Police. Why did he leave again?
Why not classify by bike kit…
One race with 105 component group set.
Next race Ultegra group set.
Next race Dura-Ace etc.
Thank neon GCN Tech sign gives Ollie a halo.
At 20:25…Vignette def. – a darker border at the periphery of a photo.
People dont have time to train. You dont need better bike, you need to get rid of smarthphone and use dumbphone ๐
Super Nice 20:55? Really? It's not even in biggie smalls and there's a huge bag dangling from the saddle.
Long live the Saturday afternoon ride to no where in particular!
20:46 Looking at the shadows, I think the tires are touching the rail, not the frame.
Folk just get all defensive and argumentative about their plastic frames and silly disc brakes versus stepping back looking from another angle to then admit they have been ripped offโฆโฆ๐ค
In TT's you could have a ranking for best average watts/kg. This would give you more of an insight into your pure physical ability.
Parents are defiantly to blame, good point. Families that are in to cycling with massive budgets will buy their kids the best gear on day one. Kids are everywhere rolling around on S-Works with Simano Ultegra Di2 with 30mm deep wheels. There are also pairents like mine that only rewarded me once they saw results rolling in and serious training. They had an old Lemond Etap with mechanical Ultegra with some spare hard-used carbon wheelsn that I was allowed to use on occasion. I placed as 1st junior in a local series and took a handful of small wins before my dad went all-out and got me a previous year Venge (not S-Works) for just 2.5k. I still use many of the components from that bike today after selling the frame and trading up to an SL4 Tarmac. I feel like the barrier to really competitive entry like this is impossible now without strong backing.
RIGHT WING? REALLY?……
My main reason for switching to running from cycling is running is a much better sport. More participants. You get to compete in awesome spots where bike races are shoved into shitty industrial estates. But the biggest thing is the danger. Road cycling is deadly. You are hated! My wife cycles as well and I never wanted to get that phone call. We still ride but mainly gravel roads and paths as much as possible. Trail running for the win.
Ride to work scheme comment: 99 Bikes in Australia pays it's staff a bonus of $2AUD per day that they ride to work.
Only solution is for events and races they ask people to bring their bicycle purchase receipt. Anything more than certain amount $$$ is disqualified as doping ๐๐๐
No amateur in their right mind wants to throw away up to 10k kit/equipment from a silly bugger chopping them in a race
Well, we have a new wave of tech yuppies who have spend most of their lives to get that job while missing out on romance & social skills so their only way of getting back at the world is through material things so, they figure out, "I could just buy my way into any & everything!"
"ohh! you have a fancy dog from Belgium? I'm into dogs too!"
"ohh! you climb cliffs?, well, that has been my thing since I was born!"
"You ride bikes? ohh I've got the lightest & the fanciest bibs, groupset even though I weight 140kg"
I walk into rooms & I get stared at from head to toe. If I'm wearing the fanciest things, I get the look of envy, if am not, I get laughed at.
This phenomenon hasn't only killed the bike industry but every other industry. People trying hard to fit in – identity crisis, low self esteem, the eagerness to beat the next door neighbor.
The society is on a downward spiral.
Juniorsโ cycling clubs, my cycle club (cowley road condors Cycling Weekly best cycling 2023!!) have struggled to get juniors involved due to challenges around allowing kids into the club due to the need for DBS checks in the UK and maybe insurance. How have other clubs approached this and do you have any advice? Kids are the future!
