An e-scooter ride in the Geirsgata protected bike lane and nearby pedestrian streets (Reykjastræti and Kolagata) in Reykjavik, Iceland (August 2023).

The City of Reykjavik is both walkable and bike friendly and has done an excellent job with placemaking. In addition to pedestrian streets, there are protected bike lanes and raised cycle tracks. Outside of the core, there are extensive paved multi-use paths for both walking and biking (see links below).

We start by riding East on Gerisgata parallel to Miðbakki (The Old Harbour). Along the way we pass a floating bus stop and a major upgrade beside the cycle path. What was previously a parking lot is now a public space including a basketball court, skate park, cycling area, murals, interpretive signage, sculptures and an old steam engine (Minør). This public space can also be seen while walking or biking the Sculpture and Shore Path (shown in our ‘Reykjavik – The Old Harbour Bike Ride’ video).

Continuing Eastbound we soon cross an intersection with Austurbakki. Here we see a raised crosswalk and continuous cycle path. This design is quite helpful to improve safety at intersections. Next we cross Geirsgata to see two pedestrian streets (Reykjastræti and Kolagata). We then stop at the intersection of Lækjargata and Hverfisgata (shown in our ‘Reykjavik – Raised Cycle Track’ video).

We finish the video by riding Westbound in the Geirsgata protected bike lane from Reykjastræti. Riding in this direction we get another view of bike parking, crosswalks, floating bus stop and the new public space.

Length of protected bike lane (approx.): 275 m

    Construction completed in 2020
