The Stoltera is approximately a three-kilometer stretch of the Baltic Sea coast in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, starting west of Warnemünde and extending in a westward direction to Geinitzort, named after the German geologist and mineralogist Eugen Geinitz. This coastal strip covers an area of about 70 hectares and is characterized by a steep, up to 20-meter-high cliff that slopes towards the Baltic Sea. Large parts of the area are designated as the Stoltera Nature Reserve, ensuring its protection.

From a geomorphological perspective, the Stoltera’s sea cliff is shaped by both glacial deposits and erosion processes. The natural habitat mainly consists of a coastal forest with oak and beech trees, as well as birch and chestnut trees. The cliff provides a habitat for sand martins and various beetle species. Stoltera is accessible to tourists through a coastal hiking trail and two educational paths with astronomical and natural history themes. The Baltic Sea Cycle Path also passes through the Stoltera.

Friedrich Barnewitz traces the name back to “Stolter Ort,” where “Ort” means “headland” or “cape,” and “Stolter” may derive from the Low German word for “steep.” According to Barnewitz, vacationers interpreted the locals’ unclear pronunciation as “Stoltera.” Another theory links the name to the personal name “Stolter” and the old word “Aa” for “stream.”
